Im curious at how much does humidity issues play a role in if older females will eat. I purchased two older females, (1300g and 1100g) a few months ago and from prior records they would have been off feed for about 9 months to date. My question revolves around the humidity issue. Im having trouble keeping it humid in their tubs. I dump water dishes about once a week and spray down beeding once or twice a week. I will say i dont have a device that truely measures humidity i just go by the moisture content on the inside of the tub...does anyone recommend a specific devise to measure himidity.

If the enviroment isn't meeting their needs they can get stressed out and refuse to eat.

First, get a hygrometer/thermometer combo. The Acu-Rite Thermometer witha probe is a great all in 1 solution. Many people say that they found theirs at Wal-Mart, however I havn't been so lucky and can't find one at any of my local stores.

Second, make sure the heat is correct. For this you need thermometers with probes to put on the glass under your substrat on your warm side.. The Acu-rite will be a good choice for this and meet this need aswell.
Instructions: Put the Acu-Rite unit on the cool side of the tank about 1 inch from the bottom. Then put the probe on the wam side of the tank under the substrat. If you're using a UTH, put it right on top of the UTH is. This way the probe of the Acu-Rite will be reasing the warm side temp and the unit itself will be reading the cool side temp and the humidity of the tank.

Next, make sure your hides are sufficient. A hide with one opening that is just big enough for the snake to squeeze into is perfect. Snakes like cramped spaces. Once you find a hide that your snake likes, you need an identicle hide on both the warm and cool sides of your tank.

A water dish is also an important item to have. Fresh water should always be provided. Most people seem to change their water every day and scrub their dish out once a week with a cleaning solution. Be sure to clean the enclosure aswell. Spot clean as needed and try to clean the entire thing once a week with a good scrubdown with cleaning solution.

I would start off trying to feed f/t food. For a snake that has been off food for a while, I'd try to feed something a little smaller than the largest part of their body. It seems that snakes that have been off food prefer to get back on with smaller meals.
Prescenting the room may be an important step for getting these snakes to eat.
You should also have a long pair of tongs/tweezers to make the mouse move to give the illussion that it might be alive.

After a couple of weeks, if they still won't eat, maybe try live food. I would do that as a last resort though.

They're not in gardening, but over in hardware along with other thermometers. Sounds like not all WalMarts have them as they seem to be being replaced by cordless digitals. The one with the cord probe we use is $12. Hope you can find it!
