Trust me, they can eat things bigger than you expect. It might take a while to get it down but thats not a problem. They shouldn't be gulping them down quickly anyway.
It gulped the hopper fast. The fastest I seen my snake eat.

Sometimes new snakes are too stressed out to show their true colors...once they settle in, they get more comfortable. A LOT of hatchlings will strike in self defense, and any large thing that's moving looks like a possible threat to them--they don't see very well. They usually grow out of this behavior in a few months.
I have noticed that sometimes hatchlings that start out docile will become much more actively defensive for a while, and then grow out of it again as they become larger and more confident.
My recommendation would be to put the snake's cage in a low-traffic area, and minimize people making fast movements around it.
