Just wondering. How do you go on vacation with over 1,000 snakes at home?

Since I've come up as a case example I'll give a few more details and an update since the post was made.....


The largest item not included in the above post was obviously TAXES, both sales tax, state and federal. Don't forget that I'm self employed so I don't pay 7.5% for social security (which won't be around for me anyway), I pay 15%............

Also, because of relocating my animals twice this year from florida to a commercial space in Ohio (add almost 10K cost plus much higher utilities) for 6 months then moving them again to a new building on my own property (20K upgrade to the building already onsite) my overall ball python production is currently looking like it will be HALF of what it was last year. I'm also still paying a $3,000 a month mortgage on a house in florida that I owe 300K on thats now only worth 170. This will be the first year that I actually loose money in that last 5 years.

Money comes and goes very easy in this industry. Profits are harder and harder to come by. A tidy profit last year is all that is going to keep me afloat this year. Hopefully my females are well rested this year (from NOT laying eggs for me now) will produce great next year and I'll be able to recover the loses from this year.

you have to look at shows as mini vacations. You just have to work really really hard before, during and even harder once you get back. For some reason everyone still poops when your not around, they just don't get it..........

I've spent about $6,000 on my collection and in my first breeding season I made about $600 in trades off two clutches.. I'm counting trades and cash the same cause this is a hobby for me all I want is for it to pay for itself. By the end of this season I should be even. Its all about the collection for me, I know that its way to difficult to do it for a living especially during a recession.

Very true, no one is going to fall over and drop dead unattended for a week HOWEVER there is a TON of catch up work to get done when you even think of being gone for a week.

And there are some companies that have quite a staff that helps keeps things in order - surely, when boss man takes time off, the staff is there keeping things in order.

I could just imagine the amount of time it takes to clean/sterilize all the bins for the ball pythons alone. and with the added fortune of your colubrids and others...lol. I bet that's a fun few days back home, eh? XD

well i think someone mentioned he has a farm, so i guess i could see that getting expensive, but i pay all the aboved on a 40,000 a year.... so im sure he does just fine.

but also i can't imagine how long it takes to take care of all those animals and its kinda a high risk thing to do, one bad illness could ruin him or a bad year or reproducing. give and take i guess

i live in michigan, in the suburbs 20 mins north of detroit, i got a house thats worth 150k for 100k, refianced my morgage and now pay 550 a month. city taxes are about 2.5k a year.

i paid off both my cars b4 i got a house and i pay off my credit card every month (they're not getting any intrest from me) so i don't have to pay for those.

40k is easy for me.
