yes yet another temp Q

how do those of you that use anything other that newspaper/paper towels in your tub keep it at proper temps. ie. cypress mulch, aspen, coconut shavings, etc.... I ask because yet a gain I tried to put cypress mulch in my tub but yet again failed to get the temps above 80( and no I wasn't experimenting with the snake in there. I put her in the extra tub) But I have tried and tried and tried and can never get the temps above 80ish. Do you use a plug in heater or what??? Oh I dont have a central heating system, just one that is on the wall in the front room so it kinda only works in there. So how do those of you with substrate in your racks keep it at proper temp levels?????? PLEASE HELP!!!

Unless you are piling on more than 2 inches of substrate the temp shouldn't fluctuate much.
What are you using to measure temps and where are you taking the readings from?

i have my RANCO directly on the flexwatt. And accurite is ontop of the substrate. Then I spot check with temp gun.

snakes usually burrow inside their hides to where they are touching the surface of the enclosure anyway, so if that is at 90-92 you may be ok.

Actually if the snakes burrow down like they usually do, it sounds as if his temps would be way too hot at the bottom of the substrate.

Use no more then half an inch of substrate and make sure the temp is set at the bottom of the substrate, right on the enclosure surface. The balls will move the aspen and find the 90* temp.

I just meant if the tank surface was at 90, but the top of the substrate was at 80 then they would burrow to the 90 temps, like you said. I must not have been as clear as I could have been

Yeah you should have the probe on the bottom surface of the tub UNDER the substrate. They will burrow or move the substrate if they need to be warmer.
