and finally that pep talk? Ever heard of morale? Constantly threatening employees makes them steal, work slower, badmouth the company, call in more, etc etc etc.

Not saying that you can't tell an employee that he can't have his cell phone, but disagreeing with some of your other points.

Worst manager ever? Worst of the worst, a manager at a well known greeting card company that guilted a guy into coming into work the day his wife and kids died in a fire.

Re: Employeer wants to take our cell phones away

Not harsh. Realistic. Being a working adult means you don't get to choose the rules. Working for a company means you WORK while you are on the clock. She said they would be allowed the cell phones while on break, or after work.
It sounds supremely whiney and like the entitlement generation that she says how they all goof off and are irresponsible, then wants a cell phone allowed so she can do MORE of the goofing off.

Why should any boss allow you to sit on your duff and do no productive work? Oh wait.. it's only XX amount of time that they won't be working.

Maybe if more people worked for the company, instead of trying to do the bare minimum to get a paycheck, this country would be known for better work ethics. It appears to me that there's not a lot of work ethics around anymore.

"Will it get me fired?" is not the way to decide what to do. Whining about a CELL PHONE is not a moral decision. It's a work rule. The boss is not unreasonable to wish the WORKERS to WORK. That's why he pays them. Why not whine that you are not allowed to have your XBox at your desk, so you could just spend all day playing video games.. instead of HAVING to surf the net, and talk via IM all day while collecting a paycheck?

At my old job we were not even allowed to bring our cell phone, and if they ever saw it they would suspend you without pay for a week.

Which in turn costs the company money, hiring new and training new and drug testing new employees. The best type of boss is the type that keeps morale high and only brings down the hammer when needed. We had a boss like that. We had less theft, less call ins, less problems and higher customer satisfaction ratings, a much lower turn over rate......

No, he would have written the guy up for the cellphone thing. He also ignored my carrying of a cellphone on the job because he knew what I used it for, the only thing I would use it for was a list of contacts for customers. I knew enough, and respected him enough to NOT be texting or talking on the job. He respected me enough to trust that I would use it for the right reasons.

Re: Employeer wants to take our cell phones away

Have you seen the economy lately? Companies are getting killed. If you want to survive you have to streamline and cut out waste. I have my own business and have made many sacrifices to keep the lights on and the doors open. If I thought anyone was wasting my time goofing off (on the phone or whatever) they are gone.

Most business owners are chomping at the bit. Every state has there own workers rights. I suggest you check yours and see what you options are. I am sure having a cell phone is not one of your rights in any state.

I'll bet your boss is trying to figure out ways he is loosing $/production. If he goes under you can use your phone all you want(if you can still afford it).
I treat my employees with respect and dont drive them like slaves. I agree moral is very important. I take care of my people and I expect them to take care of me. I dont scream and belittle people (I used to work for someone like that and the guys hated him and didnt care less to look out for him). I treat them like professionals and if they dont behave like pros and look out for the company off they go. We are all trying to keep the roof over our heads and food on the table. Its time for people to realize it takes more than just showing up, you gotta take care of business and look out for those who sign your check(take care of you).

This doent sound like greed or a power trip but necessity in these trying times.

Re: Employeer wants to take our cell phones away

The bottom line is that the employer has the right to tell you to either leave your cell phone home or check it at the door. I have lived through various recessions and boom times, and when jobs are scarce employers tow a harder line than when they are in dire need of finding people to hire. That's just the way it is.
