So feeding live is okay until I move up to rats? I guess I'll feed him live until then. However, by then, shouldn't he have enough experience at killing prey, to not get bitten?

Not necessarily, some of my snakes are pretty bad at striking so they miss the head and grab his butt, which makes the rat able to bring his head up and do some damage if your not paying attention. I always keep a pair of hemostats handy in case I need to restrain a rats head.
