Pine Furniture - Problem if treated?

Kaorte ( ) recently brought to my attention that the shelving unit I was going to buy to house my tanks is made out of pine, which I know is toxic to BPs.

I was originally planning on lacquering or glazing it before putting it to use anyway but now I'm concerned as to whether or not it will still be harmful to the snakes.

Unfortunately this is the only shelf I've found (and trust me, I've looked around) that's going to meet my needs with the tanks and their dimensions. I also would like to avoid making a shelf of my own because it will prove timely and not very cost effective in comparison to a $35 shelf from Ikea.

I plan on buying the shelf this weekend so any quick and in depth responses are much appreciated!

most pine used for furnature if not all unless you buy it from some little Amish shop outside of Guelph area lol will be kiln dried so no worries, that and the fact that it will be sealed or treated because its a furniture. it should be fine. my tank is sitting beside a 100 yr old pine dresser and it appears to be just fine as well.

Edit: looked at it as well. it will be fine.

Not a problem. The problem is keeping them in a pine enclosure that is untreated or using pine bedding.

PS: That being said... anyone that would keep a snake in an unsealed wooden enclosure... is well... you know...

Do you think it will be okay even if I leave it untreated? I've seen the shelf in person, it's pretty dried out, and it's the oils from the wood that are harmful to the snakes, right?

It will be fine... tanks on a pine shelving unit is not a concern. For the amount of wood, and the limited contact you do not need to worry.

If you are, just buy a small can of lacquer or sealer and give the unit a coating before using it.

i bet that its kiln dried. it wouldn't be an issue. it would have to be pretty wet still to be fuming the toxic fumes.

my inspiration for the amish was, today an Amish lady and her son tied there hoarse up in my parking spot behind one of our buildings. Due to the large sized lump the hoarse left behind i now have invaded my co-workers spot lol... funny how we have to pick up after our dogs when they lay a good one down out side but the Amish dont shovel there hoarse crap in to a baggy and carry it home.
