This makes me nauseous, thinking about my baby dying... Darn, I know he'll live for a long time as long as I do my part and keep everything dandy and as long as no pop up diseases come!

It isn't hard, you just have to figure out where the inside edge of the skin membrane is, and use a fish filet knife to carefully remove it from the muscles and such.
Taxidermy on snakes is done all the time with rattlers. I have salted a 7 foot eastern diamondback skin and still have it 13 years later.
