You probably should have stayed at the hospital. Having a swollen mouth/throat along with keratones being through the roof isn't good. Sure, you recovered, but it isn't something to mess around with.

It't ketones I know you shouldn't mess around with ketones, I've been Diabetic for nearly 12 years, had more admissions with acute diabetic ketoacidosis than I can count on two hands. I got referred to the DAFNE regime, and week intensive course, last year to learn to be more independent with my diabetes, injections and diet. I also learned how to reduce ketones and blood sugar level at a safe pace So had I felt the need to stay in hospital, and take up a bed, and their time, I would have. Believe me, I've never walked out on a hospital admission, I made sure the doctor understood where I was coming from and she felt it was fine for me to go home. I'm on penicillin for the throat issue and it is getting easier, slowly. I'm not one to mess around with things I know nothing about.

Generally we would have admitted you at least overnight to control the DKA. Illness is often what set that kind of thing off. Sounds like you picked up something viral, that will probably clear in a week or so.

I am a bit surprised they just let you walk out of there (it is always your choice, just seems they would have tried harder, then again I did not see your labs). The problem is that that the longer you are in that state (and the more often) you cause pretty intense damage to the kidneys and heart. Diabetes is also the leading cause of non-traumatic amputations here in the States.

Not meaning to lecture, but you really should consider letting them keep you next time to get it in line quicker.

I'm diabetic as well, juvenile onset as opposed to Type 2 for those in the know, lol! It SUCKS when you're sick and just adds to the hassle of being ill having to deal with high sugars and all that jazz. Not sure what you guys have available in your neck of the world but have you looked at an insulin pump, if they're available? I went on mine about 8 years ago (been diabetic for 22 years now) and it's made a world of difference in my A1C results and my day-to-day living. It's not foolproof and takes some learning to manage it and get familiar with the system but if they're available over that way, it might be worth looking into. I know with injections, depending on the type of insulin you're using (long-lasting, faster-acting or a mix of the two), it can be pretty difficult to get any real control of your levels except in a very general sense. Mine has a feature for continuous glucose monitoring that interfaces with my blood glucose meter and the insulin pump itself; it's phenomenal for control! Gives a much more accurate picture over the course of the day/night than do finger sticks alone. I dunno, just a thought. Hope you're feeling better and taking care of yourself. Diabetes sucks and it's nothing to mess around with. Take care of you and get to feeling better!

I knew they were going to say about doing observations and fluids over night. they say it every time. Unfortunately, I cannot recall a hospital admission (of the many) where the hospital have taken proper care of me. I've been given blunt, bent needles before. They've seen my blood sugar drop because they messed up my insulin dosage and then they pump me full of sugary drinks and nothing else then look bewildered when my sugar level shoots through the roof.

I went on the week intensive course because I was at my wits end and needed a better way of dealing with it, and not having to rely so much on consultants telling me how and what to do unless I needed their advice. It was a trial course and it included the procedure for ketones. Obviously, if I was vomiting and my condition was getting out of hand I wouldn't have left the hospital. I've had laser surgery on my eyes, and various other issues, so I know the risks. Unfortunately, for reasons I will not go into, certain things get in the way. Life complicates things, and I know you shouldn't take your life for granted and I have to live with this condition, but there have been times where things took priority over myself and once out of a routine, personally, I find it really hard to get back into it.

I really think I'm getting the start of a cold, everybody in my house and my partners cousin (who he lives with) have had bad colds and I thought I'd escaped!!

Definitely a pain! Yeah we have insulin pumps, and I had looked at one for a while. After a chat with a few other people I decided not to go on it in the end and stick with my pens I think it's just personal preference. I've been trying really hard these past few months to get back to normal, it's not easy Dosed up on painkillers, half two in the morning and I can't sleep now!
