as long as I'm ripping off pop culture, here's a second:

you have two empty plastic water jugs, the kind used for water dispensers, one of which holds five gallons, the other holds three. assuming you have an unlimited supply of water on hand, how can you get exactly four gallons of water to fit inside the five-gallon jug?

(granted this is a mathematics problem via George Polya, but most people know the movie reference).

I KNEW i recognized that from somewhere! It was one of smeagols riddles to Bilbo in the cave right? From the Hobbit? I was gunna google it but i love riddles and wouldnt wanna cheat on one.

Pour 3 gallons into the empty 5 gallon jug. Do this again but only 2 gallons will fit. Now empty the 5 gallon and put the leftover 1 gallon in it. Then refill the 3 gallon again and pour all of it into the 5 gallon jug. Leaving you with 4 gallons in the 5 gallon jug. I love playing Simon Says! lol

Fill the 5g and pour into the 3g then dump the 3g. Pour the 2g remaining in the 5g into the 3g, then fill the 5g and fill the remainder of the 3g. What is left in the 5g is 4g.

Well if that isnt the answer then you turn on 1 light but dont use the door. Then turn it off. Then turn on a 2nd light and go into the room. The light that is warm was the 1st one and the 2nd one is on and the third one is cold. I dont think thats the answer though bc that wouldnt work if you cant reach the lights or if theyre fluorescent which dont make alot of heat. I think my 1st one was right... Just leave the door open.

Nope, that's the answer. I do like leaving the door open though.

Since each should weigh a certain amount (say 10 ounces since it was not specified) the number of ounces below 550 will give you the culprit. It you have 549 ounces on the scale then the first one is the thief and so on.

I thought you were only allowed to use the scale once? How does this work? Do you mean you take one goblet from each apprentice and place it on the scale one at a time and watch as the ounces raise by 100. Then when you find the one goblet that only raises 90 ounces you know who the culprit is? I hate riddles I don't know why I bother trying to understand -_-

Ok, I'll try to explain it but I do better face to face. Break down the whole thing like this:

Brothers and sisters I have none--- He is an only child
My fathers son---that is him especially since hes an only child as indicated above. So we use word association:

Brothers and sisters I have none (I am an only child) but this man's father (the prisoners dad) is my father's son (me).

Hope I explained that right.
