Tonight was feeding time for my rescued BP. As he grabbed the f/t mouse, the stomach tore open and he constricted the entrails right out! I wasn't sure what to think about this (other than how unpleasant the smell was). But he didn't seem to mind one bit, sucked them down right with the tail. >_<
Needless to say, I threw out that cardboard feeding box and am switching to plastic after this incident.

So, after such a gruesome "murder", I decided he deserves the name Slevin Kelevra.

lolol wow...! I haven't ever had a messy feed... except an eyeball being torn out a little bit but that's it... that's gruesome!! Circle of life for ya!
Not sure if it is more likely to be messy with live vs f/t... this was live I'm guessing?

Actually I feed him f/t! The last few mice I've thawed out have each bled out of their noses.. Seems so strange to me, but maybe it has to do with how tightly he squeezes them.. as long as Slevin's happy I'll deal with it.. lol

"Gut Busters" can be caused by thawing the rodents too fast. Don't put them straight into hot water. I let mine sit in cool water for about 1 hour and then I increase the water temp about every 20 minutes until thawed. It's the same as why an ice cube cracks when you drop it warm water.

I don't know why I hadn't thought of this.. I have just been taking them straight from freezer to warm water. Thanks for this tip! I prefer my feeders "non-exploding".

Wow, that's pretty nasty and have not had that happen with any of my snakes. However, it has happened with my Tokay Geckos. They are pretty violent feeders! I occasionally feed them pinkie mice and what they do (since the prety is larger) is slam it against the tanks glass to cut the prey in half. Most of the time they don't manage but sometimes they do SO peices and guts fly EVERYWHERE! The nastiest is when I feed them Huge Hornworms YUK, Green Hornworm juices all over the glass. Another thing that has happened is, usually when I thaw out the frozen mice I put them in warm water... Once they are semi thawed out I lay them next to one of my heat lamps so that they finish thawing and stay warm. Well, I once TOTALLY forgot about the mice being under a heat lamp and cambe back to cooked and exploded mice bellies.

I had the same problem when I first got my ball. Everything I fed him was just nasty. I thought it was the company I was getting my f/t from but that wasnt it. Now, I set the rat on top of his viv and let it thaw there. It works a lot better that way. It takes about 2 hours for it to thaw and he will start to smell it after about an hour so he will be ready for it. Once it is thawed, dip it in hot water just before giving it to him. He has eaten every single time doing it this way. much easier.

I like that idea! Though, mine has never had a problem being "ready to eat" I'll definitely be thawing them out slower now lol
