greetings from peter the bp and i

well to start off hello everyone....i am very pleased to become a member of this site. i have learned alot ever since sign up. i have a bp as well, he is a few moths old and is growing pretty quick. i had a really quick question.....i thought pythons normally do no eat when about o go into shedding. the other day i had just got done feeding my bp his 2nd mice (after the 1st one he went in the box automatically were the mice was) so he is done correct,so i gently put him back in its habitat and watched as it made its way trough. ok so i know you are suppose to leave the bp alone for 48 hrs tops after feeding.the bp had goten in its hide, so here comes the 48 hrs and im patiently waiting so i can pick the snake up well i noticed in those 48 hrs it had been hiding the whole time. i thought ok thats weird, so i took a close look were it was and shined my light and there he was blue and dark as it is, eyes all cloudy. i was kind of shocked, it was pretty amazing of how quick it went to sheding mode as soon as it downed the 2ndmice. but other than that my bp is gentle as far as behavior.

    Welcome to the forums

Nice looking snake, but I have a question why are you feeding it 2 mice at time? If it is not getting enough substance from one mouse why not move to something a little bigger instead of increasing quantity?

I can't speak for the OP, but I feed Delilah 2-3 mice because she won't take a rat - live, f/t, big, small or otherwise. Maybe it's the same deal with his snake?

Btw, welcome to the forum... and that's a beautiful snake! My pastel went into shed right after eating last week, so I don't think that's abnormal - but I could be wrong, lol. He also doesn't mind being handled during shed, although he is definitely more timid than usual. Every snake is different, I suppose.

to the site! Some of my ball pythons will take prey when they are in shed, and some will not. I try to feed all of my ball pythons weekly either way. BTW, great looking ball.

Welcome to you and your lovely snake.

The shedding process is actually quite a long process and is fully explained here at this link....

    http://www.ball-pythons.net/forums/s...ad.php?t=28794

Some snakes will eat during any stage of that process, some will eat only at certain stages, some will refuse to eat at any stage of their shed. It tends to be very individual to that snake or even to that particular shed cycle. You'll grow to understand your new scaley friend and what his preferences are that way. We have some BP's that we offer if they are in shed because they will often eat, others that we just pass over if they are in shed on feeding day because they almost always refuse.

It's not uncommon to feed two prey items. I think as long as the snake is receiving the correct total volume of prey and that prey is of top quality then it's all good.

Re: greetings from peter the bp and i

i appreciate all the info and links,
its like i learn something new every time i log on.
and about the feeding, it usually would eat just one, but i notice i have to upgrade the mice, so in the mean time i just got it another one.but ill be sure to get bigger ones. it weird with this snake when i first had it it would not eat f/t mice, i tried evrything and i mean everything, he would just go up to it and go about its business. so one day i got a live one one. i had barely even been put the mice down and BAMMMM!!! he gulped it down. the pet tore told me that it was probably one they fed live to. and yea i was a new buyer a while back so i really didnt know local breeders and all, so i just got it at a pet store... and yess i did have a mite problem, so i told the pet store and they said theres are all clean, i said NOOO! beleive me itjust got home theres no way it got them on the way ome. so i go back to the store and sure enough they have mites and thicks, so they gave me a big discount on the mite off.(thats just what they had at the store) but i am more than glad to of saved that poor lil guy.
