I haven't used a Ranco.. I'm ordering a Helix and I've heard they're pretty good, they just cost a little more

    Re: Ranco

    Nope, no problems.

Except, it's an on/off thermostat....which means either it's on 100% or it's completely off...and when it turns on or off, it's a loud click. You learn to get used to it...that's my only negative thing to say about it.

Yes....it might range from 93 to 95....but it'll work just fine. I don't have a Ranco, but I do have a Johnson Control and it works the same. Never had any issues with it at all.

    Re: Ranco

There are two types of thermostats that are commonly used:

On/Off - Ranco and Johnson Controls make these type. They monitor the temperature and will turn the power off and on as needed to maintain your set temp. I use a Ranco with my ball python rack and it works great

Proportional - Helix and Herpstat are proportional thermostats. Instead of turning the power on and off, they regulate the amount of current going to the heater. By doing this, they keep your set temp without ever turning the power completely off. If you're using lightbulbs to heat with, these are the best as they don't provide excess wear on the bulbs. I have 4 Helix DBS-1000 units and I love them.

You will pay more ($30-40 on average) for a proportional thermostat over an analog (on/off) thermostat. Get what works for you and what you can afford and your animals will thank you!
