Cant get my tank to stay the same temp and humidity

I got my ball python one week ago today! Everything is going great, shes been playful, she ate, and doesn’t seem that stressed. But, I cant get her temperatures to stay the same, I have two heat lamps, one that reduces humidity and its a bright white light, another that is a red bulb and barely reduces humidity. I also have a humidifier, the humidifier is great and works properly, but if I dont have the white heat lamp on at night, the humidity drastically increases (with the red heat lamp on), if I have the white heat lamp on then it is too bright to simulate night time for her. If I just turn off the humidifier and the lamps, it gets too cold and the humidity drops too low. What do you recommend doing, do you think she is okay?

The first thing I would do is switch your substrate from aspen. It doesn’t hold humidity well at all. Pvc is also always better for holding humidity and temps. I wouldn’t worry to much about simulating day and night cycles to much for a bp. Hopefully that gets you started while others weigh in. Also when you switch substrate out to forest floor, cypress mulch, reptichip and others that will be mentioned. Put atleast a solid inch or more down.

It sounds like your heat lamps are not regulated by a thermostat. Is this correct?

Re: Cant get my tank to stay the same temp and humidity

If you're having heating issues at night, the easiest way to remedy your situation is to replace you white heat bulb with a Ceramic Heat Emitter (CHE) bulb. CHE doesn't emit light, just heat. With that said, CHE will eat your humidity. Make sure that all heating sources are controlled by a thermostat.

In regards to day/night cycle, I wouldn't worry about it as long as your terrarium sees natural light. BPs don't really gain anything from daylight.

Just a heads up, if you're going to replace the bulb, make sure the wattage is compatible. Otherwise, you'll need to get a dome that fits CHE wattage.

This is why it's important to do research BEFORE bringing an animal home.

If you don't have the money to properly care for an animal, don't bring it home.

Why do you need so many heat lamps? What are your temps?

I did plenty of research before hand, its not that I dont have the money, Im still a teenager and I will/would have to beg my parents to buy another thing on top of the 600 we spent.

Ive figured out the heat/humidity situation anyway it no longer matters, I wrote down a schedule of what to do.

Already had one of them and bought the other just in case, I never have them both on at the same time
