Re: snakes vs lizards
I go with snakes I had both lizards and snake and the lizards require daily feeding for the most part. I can leave the snakes alone over a weekend if i wanted to go out of town with little worry. (sadly I do have to find a person that willing to take care of the rodents since i have breeding colonys.

Re: snakes vs lizards
I dunno...maybe it's just me, but snakes are just more interesting to me. I have iguanas and bearded dragons as well, but for me, my snakes really hold my attention, not to mention the attention of those who come to my house.
Another added benefite is, they keep the mother-in-law away as she has a phobia about snakes. ;)

Re: snakes vs lizards
Snakes here, that puts the count to 10-0.
-
Re: snakes vs lizards
Hm, there doesn't seem to be an option for "I like them both equally, but for different reasons."
Snakes win on beauty, for sure, but the comedy a crested gecko can produce makes it hard to vote against them...
-
Re: snakes vs lizards
i like the personality on lizards better but i like the low maintenance of a snake
-
Re: snakes vs lizards
-
Re: snakes vs lizards
dang lol, i love em both! but i voted snakes.
lizards IMO tend to show more personality, bc they have more distinctive body language
snakes are FASCINATING to watch, more soothing to handle (stress killers), and way easier to maintain
i just said snakes bc i want my pets to slow down my day, not excite me =p
but i REALLY want a beardie cuz they're soooo cute and exciting. just dont have the time :(

*Everyone* should have at least one leopard gecko. Tons of personality, many attractive morphs, very tolerant of handling/human interaction (mine will almost always climb up on your hand of her own free will), and super easy to take care of. Once they reach adulthood (15-18 months old), they only need to eat about every 3 days, so while they're not as low-maintenance as a snake, they're WAY less work than a beardie.

Re: snakes vs lizards
I have and love both, but picked snakes because cricket feeding sucks. :P
-
Re: snakes vs lizards
Agreed, crickets suck. The only thing I have that eats crickets is a tarantula, and that's 1 cricket per day. Snakes all the way!

Re: snakes vs lizards
Here I was hoping I wouldn't be the only vote for lizards! :P
I love my snakes, yes, and they're very beautiful - but in my eyes they can't hold a candle to my Iguana. He's like a big, scaly puppy. He'll come to the door to see you if you walk by his cage, scratch to get out, lean against your hand and just go in total bliss mode if you find the right spot to rub...
Sure, he needs daily maintenance, but the interaction makes it worth it.
In contrast to snakes? The lax schedule is nice, but what do I get out of it other than eye candy and a food bill? An animal that doesn't like being interacted with, and only tolerates it. Isn't to say I don't love having them, too, they're just a different kind of fun.

LMAO!!! i am 100% in agreement with that statement xD

Re: snakes vs lizards
Snakes definitely. ;)
While it's true that you must be a REAL jerk to make a leo bite you, I'm still used to the feeding response of my pythons. With my leo...she'd eat the mealies when I'm already asleep or something. Present my pythons (I have 3 retics and a ball python) with a prekilled rat and you can count to 5 and that rat's a goner! :D
Not having to "gutload" or "dust" rats is also a HUUUGE plus for me...

Re: snakes vs lizards
snakes are lizards, technically.

Seconded! It's so hard to compare the two, because they both have their own perks and down-sides.
I love my geckos :D but hate the insects.... love the snakes! but the expressions those leos can pull off is to die for.
I vote both :P

The solution, OBVIOUSLY, is to pick up some cresties to add to your collection :P

Re: snakes vs lizards
I'll add another vote for both.

I'm already there actually! :D I've got both a crestie and a gargoyle.

Re: snakes vs lizards
What kind of poll is this? You do realize this is a snake forum right? LOL my money is on the snakes....
-
Re: snakes vs lizards
I love both...
My roommate and I have two ball pythons and a savannah monitor.

I like the way lizards are more active throughout the day. He'll be walking around, and when we watch TV in the living room, he comes out and sits on his heat rock and watches it too.

Re: snakes vs lizards

We feed out lizard small mice. Crickets are just snacks for him.

Re: snakes vs lizards
Interesting thread.
From perusing the responses, I'm getting the impression that snake people are lazy, and lizard people hate bugs! LOL!
My first love as a kid was the boa constrictor. I will always love the snakes, and most of my collection is snakes.
But my favorite? Gotta be the large monitors and tegus. I'm not sure whether it's because they can hear you and thus make interaction more meaningful (every one of my lizards has a distinct "call" for feeding time, and they all respond accordingly), or because you can actually tell when they "like" you easier than with snakes, I don't know. I just love them.
And midtx350z, get rid of that hot rock and do some research on your V. exanthematicus.
Chris

this made me want to change my vote to lizards
its true. i was looking at the wrong reasons. :salute:

Re: snakes vs lizards
I like both as well. If I had to pick one, though, it'd be snakes all the way. I've always been in love with snakes, and they are just as cuddly as my lizards.
However, it is nice to have a beardie snuggle up to me in the evening, sit on my shoulder/head, or do a myriad of other hilarities that beardies do.
While I have leopard geckos, I prefer fatties. They're slower, more lazy, and more calm than leos, I think.
-
Re: snakes vs lizards
If I could only own one reptile I would pick a lizard, and in specific, a savannah monitor I think. They are my "one day when I have the proper set-up" pet that I am dreaming of.
Don't get me wrong. I love the snakes. My emerald tree boa is gourgeous, my ball pythons are a pleasure to handle, and my cornsnakes are great little garbage cans and fun to watch cruise their enclosures. And I love how low maitenance they are.
I just feel I'd really be missing something without a lizard around.
-
Re: snakes vs lizards
I love them both, for different reasons, as many have said.
I think small lizards have VERY high entertainment value--they're just tremendous fun to watch. Unlike fish, their antics will make you laugh out loud sometimes.
-
Re: snakes vs lizards
I had a very bad experience with a roommates iguana one time. Ed (the iguana, not the roommate) had a [I]very[I] nasty disposition. My son, however, wants a leo and the gf and I are considering "rescuing" a beardie from the local petshop. Their husbandry is pathetic.
-
Re: snakes vs lizards
i am still shopping for my first snake. my geckos are amusing, and very low maintenence. my beardie... im tryin to decide if the lil guy is worth all the fuss! lol just kidding but he eats like a tank, which costs alot of cash. i feed pheonix worms which arent cheap, but they actually stay alive and dont stink(like crickets)
-
Re: snakes vs lizards
SNAKES ARE JUST MORE INTERESTING 2 ME, THEY'RE JUST AMAZING :snake:
-
Re: snakes vs lizards
I have a Nile monitor, Savannah monitor and two ball pythons, but I have to say I love them equally. Snakes are beautiful, calmer, and much more low maintenance, while the monitors have much more personality, but are very high maintenance and a little goofy sometimes.
-
Re: snakes vs lizards
I have both. My leos and African fat tails have been with us for many years (some are nearing their teens) and we've enjoyed them immensely but when they finally cease to be, I'm not replacing them. They've got great personality, yes, but I hate buying and feeding bugs so frequently. I prefer low maintenance animals now that I've got two children of my own to look after and the snakes fit the bill perfectly.
-
Re: snakes vs lizards
I had a couple bearded dragons for a few years and loved em a lot. They had unique personalities, and were just a lot of fun, like scaly little dogs. But when I moved out of my mom's house I decided the maintance and caging, and all the lighting was too much to lug around all the time. I miss them, but snakes are definitely where it's at for me. I might get a crestie down the line at some point, but I have enough mouths to feed at the moment.

Re: snakes vs lizards
I must say this: I LOVE big lizards, primarily varanids. Then I fell in love with beardies. Then I took home some geckos...
But snakes were my first passion. I am much more of a snake-expert than a lizard-expert. I have more snakes than lizards. I love lizards, but I am definitely a snake girl. :D
-
Re: snakes vs lizards
Lizards are for the most part to high maintenance for me. I love monitors but they need so much space and many of them like it VERY hot.
Plus many lizards need UV and so much other stuff. They are cool as hell but I am just tooooo lazy.
I've always loved snakes, and even when I am cleaning cages it's never to much work. Any kind of snake to me is amazing. So I had to vote there.
