    Are You A Thread Necromancer?
If so, please clear something up for me?

    Why do you do it?

If a thread has not had a reply for months or even years, why reply to it now?

I see this behavior on every forum I've ever gone to. It doesn't happen a lot here but I have seen it. There's one over in the python forum now that was resurrected by LukeWild1982 on 1/6/2009 that was last replied to on 1/22/2007 -- http://www.ball-pythons.net/forums/s...ad.php?t=35465

It can't be a mistake. The dates are pretty obvious. The only way you even got the post was using a search function or going back in the archive manually. So you know it's an old post.

I've never understood this. So if you are into thread resurrection, please explain why?

    Thanks.

I don't usually do it, but I resurrected a two year old thread yeaterday on the fauna BOI. I did a search for J.W. Exotics to see if anything came up and it was a bad guy post for a guy named Joshua Wright, who's email was jwexotics@aol.com. I didn't like the fact that anyone doing a search for my business gets a bad guy thread for some dude who ripped someone off two years ago. Other than that, it bothers me, too.

Re: Are You A Thread Necromancer?
i dont do this, but i think a good reason is if someone searchign a forum for a certain topic and dosent find exactly it or finds something but they need more info on it then they could post in that topic and ask a similar question like if someone asks about a UTH in a wood enclosure and they cant find it anywhere but they find a thread from 3 years agho about putting one in a plastic enclosure, they may decide instead of making a new thread just to post a reply in that one and ask. but im not entirely sure. //
on the otherhand people who research 1+year old topics and jus tsay haha or lol or thats funny or somethign of the sort. thats kind of pointless imo. but to each their own.

I bring up old threads once in a while. At first I thought you were talking about me because I just brought up an old thread in QT. I was trying to find a video of some red head.... It was a worthy cause.

Because we have a lovely search function that answers a LOT of questions for newbies!

People just can never be happy. "Go SEARCH for your answer!" "Don't post in threads older than a week!!!"

My two cents, get over it! You aint paying for it!

I resurected a thread once... I went to click "next page"... accidentally clicked a page # in the list.

Saw a thread, read it, responded to it, closed my browser and walked away... YIKES!!! Another member almost DIED!!! Seriously, it caused her immense distress and I felt I would need to pay her damages for it. :O

Another time... I logged in, there was a thread in my "portal"... answered it.

Again, pandemonium ensued. Little did I know it was a year old poll that had never been closed. Someone voted on it. It was bumped up. I did not read the date.

So much drama. So... much... drama... :tears:

    Lol.

I admit I raised a few dead spirits in my noobness to bp.net. In other forums that I was active in, they gave away prizes to whoever raised the "marked" year+old thread. Habit never died despite the fact that I know no good comes out of it, usually.

I have a strict rule against bringing up a thread thats been on this forum for longer than I have. Can't enforce that on others though, nor would I want to.

Having said that though, I just set a reminder in my BlackBerry to bring this thread back up exactly one year from now.

Sometimes if I am not interested in the current discussions, I will go back through the archives, and read through old posts. If I find one interesting, and I think others may too, I may resurrect it. It doesn't happen very often.

Re: Are You A Thread Necromancer?
Wow! I didn't expect so many responses. LOL!

Well, I understand how some times it can be accidental. I can also understand that maybe it's something useful or maybe you wanted a follow up or something.

I guess my main problem with it is, especially if it is/was a popular thread, I'll read it and get interested and get in reply mode and then notice that it's old as dirt and half the people in the thread aren't even active here anymore. What's worse is if it's an emotionally intense thread and you go through some emotions reading it then realize you just got mad, excitied, or sad over something that isn't even relevant anymore.

Sometimes the person that rezzed it replied as if it were an active thread expecting one of the participants to respond. I think these are accidental. The worst for me though is when someone does it on purpose with some mundane reply like "LOL" or "OK" or something.

On other forums the ramifications of thread necro are much higher. For instance, on the World of Warcraft forums, bored teenagers will find an offical post for 2 years ago announcing an upcoming change to the game. People read to title of the thread and get excited or pissed about it and start replying like mad until someone you is paying attention points out that "old thread is old."

If I were to bring back an old thread on purpose, I'd create a new thread referring the old and ask about it.

Re: Are You A Thread Necromancer?
If I ever see someone bringing up alot ( Not two...not a few...ALOT)of old threads I kindly tell them that their info is appriciated but older threads can muddy up the forum if brought to the top, and normally the OP is long gone and to try to keep it to newer threads that are not older than you are.

If they really have a question they want to ask they can do so in a new thread.

I normally do not do it in the "real" threads mostly QT some regular off topic...

The only time I do it in real threads is when I find a good reason to do it.

Re: Are You A Thread Necromancer?
This is a funny thread because I'm on another forum where they actually get mad at you for posting things that have been posted previously. So you'll make a post to ask a question and then apologize in said post in case you missed an older thread answering this question... yeee it's tedious!

I appreciate that people on here can just ask a question and not have to freak out about whether people will get mad at them for asking the same question that someone happened to ask a couple years earlier!
