What's with people these days?
So my fiance goes to a college in South Georgia. She lives in the dorms there and shares her dorm with another girl. This other girl is just ridiculous.
- She steals food
- She lies about stealing it
- She's stolen my fiance's jewelry and pawned it to buy pot
- Every other day she walks in on her and some random guy (It's never the same one)
So basically all sorts of bad stuff. Well this weekend my fiance came back to her dorm from visiting me to find that her roommate had put a plastic bag over the smoke alarm so to not set it off so she could smoke pot in her room. She's reported all this stuff to her building manager and he's doing basically nothing.
Today though she came into her room with her RA so that her RA could show her something on the website (it was actually related to next year's housing) and what does the RA see? She see's pot all over her roommate's desk, and had a few buds stuffed in a paper towel roll with bounce sheets shoved in to keep the smell inside the tube. Her RA immediately calls the police and her and my fiance had to fill out statements. Then her roommate arrives with the cops there and they question her and she lies to tell telling her that it's just incense so they test it and sure (and obviously) it's real so the cops chew her a new one and write her a citation to show up in court and all that good stuff.
BUT that isn't what bugs me, beyond the fact that this girl should have been kicked out of school a long time ago (This is just a small sample of the crap she's pulled, she's been 'disciplined' by the school many times for various reasons) but now my fiance is being called a rat and people are talking crap about her and giving her dirty looks as if she told on her roommate or something. How is it that someone does something ridiculously stupid and gets caught and the person who LIVES with that person and had nothing to do with it catches crap from all of her peers? I just don't get people anymore.
My fiance is a freshmen by the way.

It's college. I found when I went to college, all that pettiness went away actually. :p

Re: What's with people these days?
she can't move?
ya ya i know... "why should SHE have to move?"
Well, change isn't bad. My roommates suck right now - but instead of whining to the landlord, I opted to see what else is out there and see about some new roommates. I found 2 super cool chicks and will be moving in this weekend.
I like changing things up from time to time.

She's been trying to get a room change for months and they're just now taking her seriously. She can't live off campus either, if she moves off campus her parents will cut her off which means higher student loans which she's trying to avoid.

Re: What's with people these days?
I lived in the barracks for years when I first joined the USAF, and I have some great room mate horror stories.
Please tell your GF to get a copy of the report she filed with the college housing office, and take it with her to court. Will go a long way toward proving her side of the story.

Well my fiance isn't going to court just her roommate. But I just don't get how someone could do so much crap and basically get a slap on the wrist at best.

Re: What's with people these days?
It's like that everywhere. I know three people that got busted with x (one of them had over 90 tabs, and the other had 50-something), and nothing happened to them.
A guy I knew in high school sounds a lot like your fiance's roommate. He ended up getting caught with all that weed in his dorm, and all they did was have him go around campus picking up trash for a few hours.

Re: What's with people these days?
Typical college experience right there. Her parents will cut her off if she lives off campus wth??! Has your fiance actually talked to them seriously like "this is what I have to put up with?" Honestly if you are working and can get a job down there I would move down there for her as no matter where she goes in the dorms it will be reatarded. I'm not trying to put any age group down put from my personal experience(and having gone through it all and been that age) 18-21 year olds are THE WORST. Everything revolves around drinking or smoking or getting laid, almost nobody takes anything seriously and EVERYONE has it all figured out already, you can't tell them anything. Plus most schools just look the other way because it is easier... I was in USAF dorms though so when people did stupid stuff and it got reported there were actual conseqeuences. Out of probably 20 people on my floor I know of at least 4 who did for sure jail time for things I saw in college that got swept under the rug.
Cliffs notes: Your fiance will keep experiencing similar stuff unless she has her own room or moves out. Her parents should let her live off campus, pay for a single room or if you can move down there and rent an apt for both of you then do that. I really hope it gets better for her, my wife had to deal with this same crap when she was in college and my sister is going through similar things right now.

Re: What's with people these days?
I'm glad I went to a college where that kind of crap didn't go on.
Plenty of weed(and other drugs) and drinking, but everyone was respectful about it.

I'm sorry you feel that way. However, I have to agree that I disagree with about 80 or 90 percent of the things people are doing in this/my age group. I blame the parents for spoiling there kids most of the time, sometimes for not wanting anything to do with them and just letting them be disrespectful. I have a friend who doesn't do anything wrong, he just gets to live at home and work 15 hours a week. I have to work 40 hours to live at home, he's constantly calling me to hang out like my job doesn't exist or my hours change from day to day. I'm an auto tech, so they don't.
Back on point! Did the police try to pin your lady with any of the stash? If Obama does one thing for this country besides run it down (save your views for another thread, please) I hope he makes much stiffer penalties for drug law violations. I can't even talk to a girl in several cities around mine just because everyone there smokes pot or does harder drugs and I'm not the party type.

Well Aaron this a problem I never have had to deal with too much. Even the most ignorant and pathetic criminals tend to realize, that if they take from me, they will eventually find me standing over them while they sleep. The waking up part has been a traumatic experience for those individuals to say the least.
This is FACT.

Re: What's with people these days?
Update as of this morning: Her roommate was expelled.

Re: What's with people these days?
Good to hear. Hopefully this life lesson for that girl kicks her into gear to actually stop being a thief/slob/pothead and take life seriously. Probably not though, she'll just blame your fiance for everything that happened and not take any personal responsibility.
So I guess your fiance gets the room to herself for the rest of the semester? That would be great.

We think so, no word on that yet...she's suppose to have a room to herself anyway.

Re: What's with people these days?
I can understand being upset about living with a clepto, but other than that, i don't understand what the big deal is. there is obviously no judgement to be made about what someone chooses to do for their amusement - like smoking pot. I think it is terrible that that girl got expelled. I think your degree should not be jeopardized for any reason other than academic unless you are a detriment to those around you.
That girl has every right to sleep with 6 different guys a day, smoke as much weed as she can afford, and still be a member of an academic establishment so long as her marks are at par.
The stealing could have absolutely been dealt with in a manner that would have probably changed the series of events that led to her expulsion. I know, because i lived in dorms and off campus while attending university, and like anyone else, had ppl eat my food, wear my clothes etc.
the social circumstances offered to you at a university are ones that you should learn to deal with effectively for your own good. just like it is socially awkward to steal someone's pudding cup, it is just as socially awkward to not be able to address that instance effectively. I mean if ur fiance put a lock on her door, talked to her roommate in a very serious way - outlined their expectations for and from one another, etc. then i am sure their would have been no expulsion.
I say this because there is more to someone than what they have been up to lately. If i got kicked out of school for smoking weed, who knows if i would be where i am today - i have done things im not proud of, and things i would take back - we all have. imagine if you got fired/expelled/evicted, because ur neighbor or coworker decided to judge you on the mistake you made most recently, and you were prosecuted to the full extent of the law/rule.
just a thought.

In most any college you sign a binding contract to live in the dorms, and most colleges have a Zero Tolerance policy on Drug and Alcohols. She broke the rules multiple times and paid the price.
If you paid $10K to go to school and then flunked out of school is the school going to refund your $ because you weren't responsible enough to study hard? Nope.
Personally this idea that doing drugs and illegally consuming alcohol is just "part of the college experience" disgusts me. You don't go to college to party and if you do then you're there for all the wrong reasons.

Wow where to start...
1- ok first off there are all sorts of opinions left and right about smoking pot and I won't get into that debate. However, it IS ILLEGAL and when you live in college dorms you sign a statement saying you understand the personal conduct/drug/alcohol policy and agree to follow it. The big deal is she violated that, lied to police and stole. Also when you live with a roomate are just some things you don't do. Yes she has a right to sleep with whoever she wants but she also has to respect the fact that someone else lives there and it likely is a single room setup which I'm sure it was.
2- Not everyone is so blase about roomates that steal food, take clothes without asking etc... You do what his fiance did, you confront the problem since it obviously didn't work then take it to the next level which didn't work so then you go to the RA which she did. If this girl had any sort of respect at all then she would have stopped doing what she was doing but she didn't so she got what she had coming.
3- If they had separate rooms then half of this wouldn't be an issue. Common sense dictates that they had a single dorm room which every single freshman dorm I've ever seen was set up as. Unless someone pays for an upgrade or you go to some ridiculous school then that's how it is.
4-Yes there is more to someone then what they've been up to lately, but this was an ongoing situation that his fiance tried to address and the girl would not correct it over a long period of time. It is March now, school starts in September, 6+ months is long enough for someone to straighten up. As far as your example...yeah if my neighbor was stealing from me I'd have him/her prosecuted to the full extent of the law in a second, I don't care how it was before that there are some things you don't mess around with. I know most people smoke weed in college and it isn't a big deal but people who get caught doing it are often kicked out and I do not feel sorry for them. A person signs a paper saying you won't smoke pot and you do it and then I'm suppossed to feel bad when they get kicked out? Welcome to real life where there are actual consequences for your actions. I know that in high school kids can get away with murder and do whatever they want but that's not how the rest of the world works. Some people find out the hard way.
I'm sorry, statements that people make like "just deal with it" really piss me off. If someone is stealing from you and creating a hostile atmosphere where you live then yeah you DO deal with it and I'm glad it got dealt with like it did.
