    Picture thief
Dont you love it when someone steals your picture and uses it in their for sale add. I asked the vendor to stop using the picture and I reported it to kingsnake and nothing seems to work. I am not sure why kingsnake allows this when they have removed my adds in the past for putting "trades considered" in my add even though nearly every add says that.

Here is the link to my snow ball picture I posted on some forums being used by a guy to sell his snake.

sorry that your having this kind of trouble, but to protect yourself in the future, watermark your photos before you post them ANYWHERE. Best way to keep your property as yours. I hope you can get this issue resolved soon. Good luck.

Well, there is SOME attempt at a disclaimer...

    Quote:

the picture is just an example of a snow produced by another breeder.
but I would have done two things:
    1. ask you first
    2. put YOUR name as the photographer

However, Kingsnake might have some kind of rule that disallows him to mention any other breeder for any reason. Maybe he tried? and Maybe kingnsake pulled his ad for putting your name?

Had that happened to me then I just wouldn't post the picture. Good luck getting it taken down.

    Re: Picture theif
I had informed kingsnake and they made me prove it was not his pic and then they said the issue was resolved but 5 days latter the add was back. Again I reported it and e-mailed phil and asked him to stop using it. My thread on kingsnake about this was deleted as well go figure. I guess I will have to water mark from now on. What ever happened to if it was not yours you did not use it unless you had permission?

    Thanks Ryan Young

I have to agree on watermarking.

At least he doesn't claim the snake is his though, still stealing but he's not being as dishonest as he could be.

This is not a new problem and a simple watermark in the middle of the pics would prevent this.

Here is an easy way to watermark hundreds of pics at once and without having to buy an expensive software http://www.ball-pythons.net/forums/s...ad.php?t=74550

    Ryan,
Sorry you feel that way, I thought it would help the buyers to see what a snow looks like and I can not put the breeders name on the ad or KS would kick it off and if it was watermarked I would have know who to ask about using it, now I know and since you complained to KS it does not mater anymore any way. Copyright Infringement is a very bad thing to accuse someone of publicly especially if the pictures is not properly watermarked or at least put your name in the file name. I have a folder with 1000s of BP pictures in it for me to look at and I have NEVER used one to sell one of my snakes and this one was just for an example. You should have called me to talk about this because when I post the ad the first time and you emailed me you never replied to me response so I thought you where just some joker causing trouble. By the way that is the nicest picture of snow I have seen. I will delete it of my HD for you, Sorry for the sleepless nights. But like everyone said to you, if you don't want it used do it correctly in the first place.

WOW Looking good but for $20 I would keep him in a rack!

I feel bad that I made him upset but all he had to do was call me, and I would have know who's it was and I would have watermarked it for him! Like I said it was just an example produced by another breeder!

I have tons of pictures out there and you can use any you want as long as your not saying they are yours and there not.

Great write up Deb! This is the program I had and Deb was kind enough to teach me to watermark. If I can do it, with my crappy computer skills, anyone can. :) With how easy it is to capture photo's online, it's just good common sense to watermark the pictures you post. Personally I keep two files with identical pictures in them - one are all watermarked, the other are all the originals so I can always prove I was the one who placed my watermark on them.

Am I the only one who is really bothered by this statement? So if I fail to watermark my photos, it is fair game for people to steal?? And then to tell him it is his fault! It is stealing if you did not get his permission to use HIS photo.

Seems the obvious has been overlooked -- if the double het for sale has been "replaced by one of his snow sons" as the ad claims -- why is he stealing a picture of someone elses snow. :weirdface

    You don't. It's already copyrighted.

You don't need to submit a form, and you don't have to use that "©" symbol or a digital watermark -- those are just customary ways of identifying the copyright owner.
Sorry, I don't see any reason to post any links to "defamation" either.

There's this whole societal acceptance that anything put up on the internet is fair game, free, and not protected by any copyrights. People see pictures and text (and music and videos etc) that are put up on the internet as public property, not individual property. Right-click+save picture as makes stealing pictures so easy, it seems hard to believe that it is stealing, <sarcasm>stealing is supposed to be difficult, right??</sarcasm>

This isn't how it is supposed to work according to the law books, but the extent to which this happens is enormous.

This is the reply to Ryan 2-6-09 that I never got an answer to so I did not even know if he was the real deal. At any rate I apologize for using your picture, I would have asked if it had a name or ID of some sort, looks like I download it in 5-22-08 so I would have no Idea who or where it came from.

    ____________________________________________________________
I just had it in a snake picture folder It does not have a name on it so I
did not know where it came from, It says in the ad that it is just a picture
of a Snow. I can put your name on it or get another if you want.

Phil, really - that is shady.

Any picture you see now without a watermark, you will use "as an example"? Is your mentality "Yeah - I'll show him why he should watermark his pictures"...

You did - I commend that and am happy to see you here explaining your side of the story. Had you not given a hoot, you would not be here.

I just hope you don't think that just because something doesn't say who it belongs to or contains some kind of copyright mark or name that Google deems it fair game for anyone in the world to use. That's not the way things work.

    Re: Picture thief
Perhaps the issue is not with your apology but with the fact that you then called into question the validity of the person who owned the picture and attempted to justify your use of the photo because it was not watermarked. Sometimes an apology should be just that, an apology without all the other stuff mucking it up.

    Pretty much my point too.

If you know the photo is not yours, you should not be using it until you have express permission from the owner.

    That's the point of copyright.

Here is a little reminder on copyright that will be useful to everybody.
    http://www.uspto.gov/web/offices/dco...trefresher.htm

This goes to anyone reading this not singling out anyone; I am posting this specifically because from time to time on this forum we also run across people posting pictures that do not belong to them.

Because people post their picture(s) online does not mean they want other people to use them or redistribute them (watermarked or not). If you wish to share a picture that does not belong to you simply put a link that will re-direct people to the said picture(s) or email the owner and ask for the permission to use their picture(s).

Even giving proper credit when posting a picture does not mean anything if the owner did not give you permission to use their work.

So keep this in mind when posting something that does not belong to you.

I am not happy that kingsnake closed your account. I thought I had e-mailed you back not to use it but looking on my computer I had wrote a draft (unsent e-mail response) and then for some reason not sent it (must have got distracted by the 3 year old). All I wanted was for you to stop using the picture not to get kicked off kingsnake. I am sorry they took such drastic measures.

    THE END!

Just a precaution, I'd make the watermark a little bigger. . . or use one that's more difficult to remove. I just removed the watermark in a simple paint program & it took me less than 3 minutes to have it done and saved out in .jpg format. I don't know how to post pictures directly on the thread like that guy did to show his watermarked pied picture.
