Pregnant or not!
For the live of me i can't tell if she pregnant or not. I got her janurary 16th and she was mated same day and day after. Shes not been mated since. IF she is i should have babies by the 10th the latest
Some days shes active playing others she lays around A LOT.
heres pictures i could take of her when active.

Re: Pregnant or not!
Well it's hard to say. She looks like if she were a young lean rat, she might be pregnant, but not very far along, especially if she is supposed to give birth in 6 days.
-
Re: Pregnant or not!
that's what im thinking. but at some times when walking her belly has a little sag. so unless she gets bigger then idk. its weird i dont hear mating going on anymore. i did introduce a second male to the group to help speed things up.

Re: Pregnant or not!
Over the top shots are best for photo-checking preggos, but like Connie said, unless it was a lean mom, does not look preggo to me. However, I will say that most of our rats dont show much at all until about a week before birth, and even that is slight, and I probably wouldnt notice it in an unfamiliar rat in a pic. About 3-4 days before birth is when they really look big and lumpy....then you know when to expect them.

Re: Pregnant or not!
I'll have disagree with over the top pics being the best indicator, at least for me anyways.
I agree with frankykeno that holding them up under their arm pits will show the roundness of a pregnant girl clearer than over the top or from the side.
This is showing a mammary tumor, but she is being held up in the manner I described. She isn't preggers btw. ;)

Re: Pregnant or not!
i dont think she is more and more i study her. i did feel her stomach and its soft yet firm but didnt feel any babies.
hope the other male will man up and mate them. he seems to be more laid back cause the other male owns the cage.

Re: Pregnant or not!
my females look like the ate a softball a couple days before giving birth. hope this helps :salute:

Re: Pregnant or not!
I agree those shots are good too, but I think it is still easier for me to see from above. I think this is because I try not to disturb our very preggo females, so I have just gotten used to finding ways to give them a once over without having to wrangle them and flip them every which way.

Re: Pregnant or not!
This might not apply to rats, but with our mice, I find it easiest to see if they are preggo when they climb on the hardware cloth on the sides of the enclosure. Our enclosures are similar to the ones in this sticky:
http://ball-pythons.net/forums/showthread.php?t=56321
So when the mice climb the sides, they end up being in a position very similar to the one in Connie's pic, they just got that way naturally instead of being held. Holding a mouse like that doesn't work terribly well; they won't stay still long enough to get a good look.
When they climb the hardware cloth, I can either look from outside the cage, and see their bellies, which will look very round and the nipples will become a little more prominent. Or I can look from inside the cage, and see their backs. From this position, I can see a very pronounced "golf ball in their belly" figure. What gives it away, even when they are closer to a "marble in the belly" stage, is that the roundness starts abruptly, rather than a gradual pear shape that a fat but not pregnant mouse will have.
It also helps a lot to know your individual animals. Once you know the normal profile of a particular female, it will be easier to detect the first subtle signs that she is pregnant.

Re: Pregnant or not!
I miss read her ovulation day so shes probably on day 16-18 today maybe lil less. her nipples are showing which is GOOD sign.
she always sleeps like that when the male is with her.

Re: Pregnant or not!
Unless she's just dirty, she appears to be a Mink/Lilac Merle.
She a very cute little girl and I vote that she's preggers!

Re: Pregnant or not!
IDK what she is. shes been that color since i got her. has like a bluish grey to her at times.
WHen she sits and eats she looks like a baseball. idk now when her due date is. i guess ill shoot for next Friday.

She's most likely a Merle, probably a Lilac if she has a Blue sheen to her.
Just keep in mind that she is most likely a Merle, therefore carrying a lethal homozygous gene. Don't breed her with other Merle rats and you'll be fine. :)

Re: Pregnant or not!
i doubt ill have anything to worry about that. since my males aren't.

Re: Pregnant or not!
Nope not breeding for genetics at all. all babies will be in CO2 at 5 weeks old

Re: Pregnant or not!
I love the bin idea. We currently have 5( 4 f 1 m) in a 40g tank with a wood and small chicken wire lid. For extra room we added a old hamster cage to the top so they an get fresh air. We have a hairless so pregnant she can't jump to the top now. I'll use the rubbermade idea for the males tank. Thanks!

Keep in mind hairless females often do not lactate, or don't make very much, and generally make poor breeders because of their higher maintenance needs.

Re: Pregnant or not!
When breeding hairless rats most breeders try to keep another female(regular w/hair) who is pregnant to help take over the nursing. Like said before Hairless rats barely produce milk if any.

Re: Pregnant or not!
Well She had 10 Babies today around 230 or so. so today was day 23 and he did mate her the 17th 2nd day of bring her home. doing very well. a bit nippy when i was giving her more bedding but that's all good.
Picture is of her and another male(not father). this male went right ot her side through the whole birthing and will not leave her side since. the father is with a diff girl.

Re: Pregnant or not!
Very cute! and, pardon me saying, very healthy and delicious looking for snake food!
-
Re: Pregnant or not!
Thanks. their 25-30 grams now once they hit 55-60 off to co2
-
Re: Pregnant or not!
Hope you realize that male's just going to re-breed her a few hours after she delivered... She's just going to get worn down very quickly and the quality of babies will rapidly diminish. Why not give her a break? Or at least keep her with another female, instead of another male.. I personally would rather them be alone when birthing.

Re: Pregnant or not!
i like them when they are in that fat tub of goo stage:rofl:
-
Re: Pregnant or not!
shes been houses separately since day one. the male was irritating her so i removed him.
the other female was taking over her babies and i didnt want dry milking going on. so shes with the 2 males which she is now prego. by time she pops itll just in time for the babies to be in CO2
