Pre-Scent with F/T
I am switching over to f/t. With live, I just put the box with the mouse on the tank screen for 20-30 minutes to get them in the mood. Do I leave the thawed mouse on the screen? Is the mouse going to get stiff in 30 minutes?
Thanks.

Re: Pre-Scent with F/T
I thaw my F/T right in the rooms with my snakes ... by the time they are completely thawed out, the room is nice and "pre-scented".
Hope this helps.

I don't have a room. The tanks are in the living room. I moved the mice from the freezer to the fridge this morning to defrost. I guess I'll leave the cold mice on the screen to warm up and then heat them for meal time. I hope the cats don't grab them. :O
I'll let you know how it works out.

I have my guy in the living room. I just put the mouse on top of the screen to thaw - it gets Stan ready to eat and it doesn't smell up the room or anything.
When they are completely thawed out I just take a hair dryer to them (especially thier head) for a few minutes and that works great.

Re: Pre-Scent with F/T
I let them thaw out for an hour or so and then put a small ceramic heater over them to warm them up like Mcdonalds does with your food. They scent the entire room. All my boas will come out of their hides just from the smell and start climbing the walls. My balls just stay in their hides and wait.
I have never had any mice or rats stiffen up on me.

Re: Pre-Scent with F/T
I found the mice completely thawed in the fridge when I got home. I left them on the tank screen to warm and the snakes were out and about showing a lot of interest, just as they did with live.
I used a red bulb to heat the mice and presented them with tweezers. The reaction was cautionary, unlike the immediate strikes with live. It took a little while before they grabbed the mice but they did.
I'm going to guess that I need to heat the mouse heads a little more before feeding. I only left them out of the fridge for 30 minutes. I'll bump that up to an hour also.
BTW, the live mice stunk way more than the dead ones.
Thanks.

Same here. I place them in an open Tupperware container & let them defrost close to the racks.

I run them through hot tap water for a bit & then blow dry their heads. Makes them warm & stinky :)

I once tried defrosting a hopper in a plastic bag with hot water. The mouse popped when the snake bit it. I want to avoid that kind of mess as the mice get bigger. :)
Thanks.

Oh yeah,
Poppers REEK :puke2:
Cooler water can help - but if it got defrosted and refrozen at some point it will probably pop anyway.
I stick with defrosting slowly at room temperature then a swift blast from the hairdrier - intrestingly everytime I use the hairdrier now all these little scaley heads suddenly appear.
