Thermometer Gets Knocked Around
First, thanks to everyone's advice, my BP's had perfect one piece sheds and pooped (big loads) after they were done so my son was able to keep the skins to show his friends.
Second, how do you keep the snake from knocking over the Acu-Rite thermometer? Do you stick it to the side of the enclosure? If I wedge it behind the hide I can't see it.
Any ideas?
Thanks.

Re: Thermometer Gets Knocked Around
Use the indoor/outdoor Accurite and put just the probe in the tank.
Re: Thermometer Gets Knocked Around
They are tanks.
I have the probe under the hide on the hot side and the unit sitting on the cool side so I can see the ambient temp.
Does the probe measure the humidity? I thought the main unit did that part.

Ahh...The main part measures humidity. You could mount the main part on the glass with double stick tape or velcro.

Had the very same problem...I went to Walmart...3M makes a little package of stickey back velcro. I think 3ft of it for about $4.50...look good too once it is all mounted up...just don't mount too high off the floor of the tank since that is where your snake will be! :) Mine has prolly 2.5in from bottom of Accu-Rite to the bottom of tank.

Re: Thermometer Gets Knocked Around
They have a slot on the back of the actual thermometer to slid the end of a suction cup into it. I have both of my accuriate thermometers attched to the side of the glass about 3 inches above the substrate with suction cups I found at Michaels Craft store. I'm sure you could find suction cups anywhere though. They hold up to 4 pounds, so even when my baby girl decides to use one as a resting spot, they stay in place.
Hope that helps.
Also by using the suction cups, you avoid using any sticky substances in the enclosure, which could get dislodged and attached to the scales of your snake.
Re: Thermometer Gets Knocked Around
I find the suction cups unstick often, I use industrial velcro from home depot, that stuff sticks and is next to impossible to unstick. (no bp noses will get stuck to the sticky back that way;))

It sounds like we have almost the same setup. I needed aluminum tape to tape my UTH to the bottom of the tank. This lets me reuse it and move it without damaging the UTH. Either way, Home Depot only sells this massive roll for like $6 so i had plenty left over. I never intend on moving moving the Accurite around so i taped the wire to the bottom of my tank. It looks pretty ugly but the substrate covers it up nicely. i run the tape all the way to the base of the thermometer and also to the end of the probe. Nothing moves and i can easily clean around it. i use a decorative rock to stabilize the back of the thermometer and i never have any issues.
hope this helps.
we would love to see pics. i will be posting mu enclosure after i clean the tank this weekend.
Re: Thermometer Gets Knocked Around
I'm a newbie, so with a baby ball, we have had no problems with suction cups. The more experienced owners with larger snakes might experience problems with suction cups coming unstuck. It's all a learning experience and I've already determined that I've spent probably $150 on crap that either doesn't work or is overkill. It's been fun doing it though!:D

I find my big boy likes to sit his fat butt on top of my thermometers for some reason when hes exploring so the suction cups just weren't able to hold on haha.

I use the exact same stuff. It also works great for other projects around the house.
Re: Thermometer Gets Knocked Around
ive had them undo velcro sometimes they try to push their head behind it thinking they found a route of escape.
i dont use anything anymore i dont care to imagine how much bacteria that velcro would harbor
Re: Thermometer Gets Knocked Around
JohnNJ: I would take the thermometer out at night when you're sleeping and not monitoring anyway, and when the snake is out cruising.
I've had a lot of Acu-Rites get pee'd on and stop working Lol! I have a couple in my rack systems and a couple in my cages to be able to glance at the humidity and they all come out at night!
Re: Thermometer Gets Knocked Around
This is what I use has a wireless Indoor/Outdoor Thermo-Hygrometer sensor. Doesn't need a probe just place the sensor in the tank and you get very accurate hygo/temp reads. Way more accurate than any temp gun for racks as well since you lose a few degrees once you open a tub, aim at just the right distance and wait for the temp gun to read the hot spot.

This is also sold at Lowes if you have a local store.
Re: Thermometer Gets Knocked Around
I just taped mine on to my tub with duct tape, although I have a rack and do not care about the aesthetics(is that spelled right?)

I disagree that the Acu-Rite is "...way more accurate.." than a temp gun. In fact, they aren't more accurate at all. I have a ton of Acu-Rites and they all read different temps and humidity when put side by side :)
Re: Thermometer Gets Knocked Around
i know for a fact they are not more accurate than a temp gun

If you mean you have tape inside the tub I would urge you to remove it ASAP.
Use something like a glue gun or silicon as (once set and cured ) they have far less chance of damaging your pet.
Link to a list of snakes hurt by tape.

It's they're house, let them re-arrange as they see fit. Then when they aren't looking move it back to where YOU see fit! Eventually, it seems like they get it and just quit knocking them over. works for me!
