Watch Where You Buy Your Animals From!
Hi guys,
Just wanted to share my thoughts on "Why you should only buy animals from Reputable Breeders". Recently, a friend of mine bought 2 red blood pythons from LLL Reptile 3 weeks ago,
here is the vid of him setting them up.
"Boids007: New Snakes & Setting up their Cage" (12/19/08)
YouTube - New Snakes & Setting up their Cage
And within a 2 week period, he had found that the bloods were sick:
"Boids007:My Bloods are Sick"(1/2/09)
YouTube - My Bloods are Sick
And within a week after that, one of them had died of a respiratory infection:
"Boids007:R.I.P Circe (Blood Python)"(1/11/09)
YouTube - R.I.P Circe (Blood Python)
Thankfully, the one that is still ALIVE is going to be taken to a vet to get antibiotics for his respiratory infection. Could he have taken action about this problem sooner? Of course he could, and probably could have saved the first snakes life, but why would you want to take in these problems in the first place? Next time you buy an animal, PLEASE do research on the places that are Reputable and places you should stay away from! This is a very good example why you should only buy your animals from Reputable Breeders...

Re: Watch Where You Buy Your Animals From!
Bloods are hearty animals for the most part, as long as they're setup right.
They're not as forgiving as ball pythons or other pythons for that matter. i would think in a poorly setup enclosure you could easily kill an animal in 2 weeks.
What was the enclosure setup like. Temperatures and humidity etc etc...
I've also not heard alot of good things about LLL and won't buy from them. Sad thing is that people see that $100 price tag and buy a cheap animal. You kind of get what you pay for sometimes. Spend the extra money and buy healthy animals from reputable people.

Oh im not sure about the specifics as it wasn't my animal. But its seems all his other snakes are doing fine, and are being well taken care of. He's had all of them for a while now and none have become sick on him...

Re: Watch Where You Buy Your Animals From!
I dunno about the OP at hand, but I found it funny that he doesnt know male from female.
I have seen a couple of this guys other vids, I recognize the voice....I kind of like his voice, yet at the same time it is ....not creepy, but ...I dunno....maybe I am just having an off day.

Re: Watch Where You Buy Your Animals From!
LLL does not produce most of their reptiles, the last time I asked about their leos they said the people they got theirs from did not give them what temp they incubated at for the sex of the leos. It gos to show buy from people well known, and only if you can see the animals first. Im no good with bloods but id have someone look at their enclosure, im pretty sure that they need very high humidity and heat lamps like they have suck the humidity right out.

Yea, anything packaged up is fine, it's just that many of their animals are WC, have disease, Mites, and a whole bunch of other problems... Someone i know has actually been in there store, and said it's terrible & doesn't look clean! I don't want to give out names for sake of privacy...

Yep, thats what the snakes were packaged in... Easy type of bag to get sogged up when the animal deficates and create a hole for it to escape :(

Re: Watch Where You Buy Your Animals From!
In that second video I'm sorry but you shouldn't use a metal coat hanger to grab the snake, you could injure it.

Yea, this is a kid on youtube called "Boids007", does that ring a bell? He's a friend of mine, and i thought i'd post his blood python story as an example to all the new comers of why you should research where you are buying your animals from, to see wether they are trustable or not...

I don't know what goes on behind the camera, it seemed like he had a proper enclosure with Moist Cypress in all his vids of them... But again, i don't live with him... I live FAR away from him lol
But i will surely message him and ask how he was keeping the snakes (Temps, Humidity, etc.) And will definately get back to you.

Re: Watch Where You Buy Your Animals From!
Id would also look into the type of bedding he uses. I wont trust any bedding coming from homedepot especially when made for gardening and has who knows what in it. Ask him DBD why he also changed that bedding to what looks like bed-a-beast in the sick video in the males tank.

Yea, when i first saw the video i saw the bag, and i could of swore i saw the word blend on it. I asked him to make sure it said 100% cypress and didn't say that it was blended with cedar or pine. He said he checked the bag and it ddn't contain anything but cypress. I'll ask him if he's using bed-a-beast. Is bed-a-beast good or bad?
-
Re: Watch Where You Buy Your Animals From!
The bag of Cypress obviously said Blended on it. They generally don't say what exactly it's blended with though. But I think they're also not healthy like, chemical-wise? Not sure though. I haven't looked into Cypress much, but I know for sure you don't want to buy ANYTHING from Home Depot or garden centers unless it says 100% cypress and doesn't say blend on it anywhere.
That was most likely the problem right there =[ Plus, the temps could've been way too high, the humidity too low. Alot of things could have been wrong with the husbandry to make these snakes so sick so quickly. Blood Pythons aren't forgiving like Ball's are. And they can't take the same temps/humidity levels as Ball's either.
On another note, I found it really funny that he called the first one a male, then pointed out the female sign on it and still said "see it's a male" LOL
But I didn't find it funny that he pretty much treated them like crocs. And what was up with that metal hanger? They're babies for christs sake it's not like a bite would hurt. And if the one does live, he needs to start handling it..like, HANDling it. The only way to make sure a Blood Python grows up calm and docile is to be sure it's used to being HANDled. Like, NO wires? -.-
Sucks that the one snake died. :( He needs to make sure his other animals aren't sick, since he didn't quarantine.

Re: Watch Where You Buy Your Animals From!
Well, LLL is a FLIPPER!!!! What do you expect? They buy animals wholesale, don't QT and turn around and sell them to make a quick buck. OF COURSE there are going to be unhealthy animals sent out the door :rolleye2:

Yep that was the whole point of my thread lol "Only buy your animals from reputable breeders"

Re: Watch Where You Buy Your Animals From!
We learned the hard way! We bought a few normal females off Craigslist, and one had a RI... poor thing. That snake spread it around... we have spent hundreds of dollars to learn the lessons of 1) choosing a healthy animal and 2) quarantine!!!
