help! scale rot? looks terrible!
this is my sub-adult Ball Python, IRIE
I found that she was shedding again, and was surprised since she had shed in the last 2 or 3 weeks already.
http://img241.imageshack.us/img241/6130/p1010569jh6.jpg
Since she was having difficulty (patchy shed), I inspected her, and found redness on her belly, accompanied by crusty stuff.

http://img517.imageshack.us/img517/9742/p1010571gs0.jpg
I worried, but then thought that the crusty stuff was just substrate stuck to her body from a more humid environment.
I washed her off, but she was still quite red.

In some places, it looks infected.

What's wrong with her?
is it scale rot?
taking her to a vet tomorrow morning

Re: help! scale rot? looks terrible!
For tonight, I've removed her from her tank and put her in a tub with newspaper and the towel as you see.
I'll clean the tank completely tomorrow

Re: help! scale rot? looks terrible!
Bring the snake to a vet immediately. That looks pretty serious, and i would be worried about things getting worse, and causing infection. If you do not, its very likely that the snake could die if it is not properly taken care of.
You have to be absolutely dilligent in keeping that enclosure clean, and AT the PROPER temperatures. and DRY ( Humidity is OK, WET Substrate is NOT)
What are you using to heat the previous enclosure? and what were you keeping the snake on? Can you take photos?
-
Re: help! scale rot? looks terrible!
Honestly you should see a vet but since they are most likely closed right now I would go to CVS/Eckerd/Right-Aid/Walgreens ect... and pick up a bottle of sugical scrub it is blue and should have 2% Chlorhexidine Gluconate. Dilute this with water to a sky blue color and soak her for10 to 15 minutes. The water doesnt need to be deep. Do this 1 time tonight and 1 time tomorrow morning then call your vet and make and appointment and make sure that this treatment is okay with him/her before you do it again.
This treatment will help her start to heal but she still needs to see a vet ASAP.

Re: help! scale rot? looks terrible!
WOW...that will take antibiotic ointment and injected antibiotics probally. Vet asap!!! Really need to work on the husbandry to avoid this happening again...poor snake. :(

I'm using a ZooMed undertank heater and a (100w?) white lamp when the UTH is not giving enough heat to maintain temperature
I'm using ZooMed ReptiBark substrate
looks like this:

I've kept it dry, only increasing humidity about 50% if she's in shed.

Do others concur with this treatment? I don't want to do something that may affect whatever the vet will do.

Re: help! scale rot? looks terrible!
its most likely a burn those zoo meds get HOT! thermostat aways!
-
Re: help! scale rot? looks terrible!
Do you have anything regulating the heat pad? It does look like it could be a burn, as well. The under tank heaters can get way too hot for a ball python if left unregulated.
What are you measuring your temps with?
-
Re: help! scale rot? looks terrible!
I would first call all the vets in your town, and see if they can see you for an emergency.
i've never delt with scale rot or a burn, my question really is how often have you handled her lately? that looks like its been in the works for a few weeks.
but either way, vet asap.
as for the UTH, make sure you're regulating it, it would make sense if she got burnt and now is shedding so quickly after the last

I measure the temperature with a digital thermometer; the temps never get high, rarely higher than low 90s, typically in 80s.
The UTH doesn't get HOT to the touch, inside or outside of the tank

I used to handle her every night, since I got off of work at 11pm when she was beginning to get active.
I've moved home now and have been busy, away from home, or otherwise on a different schedule. She's been in her hide often, and I haven't bothered her.
I should have been checking on her!
-
Re: help! scale rot? looks terrible!
is that temp taken at the top of the substrate? i know my bps like to dig under theirs...
either way, get out your yellow pages and call vets.... if one is open tonight it will be easier on the snake to get treatment now - either way if they are not you need to figure out when you can get in...
-
Re: help! scale rot? looks terrible!
the humididity should be at 55-60% Constantly. Up it to about 70% for shed times, but generally, you do no have to, as 55-60% is fine for most normal shedding ball pythons. The low humidity is why you were having a bad shed, or may have had bad sheds previously as well.
What are you using to heat the Tub? I would suggest just cleaning the normal enclosure TONIGHT.
Is the Under tank heater on a thermostat? if not, you NEED to have one, or a dimmer. They cause burns. ( not always, but in this case, im going to assume yes, that is likely the case, which means you have to either do what kelly is telling you and get the soloution, or get some Neosporin ( WITHOUT the painkiller) and Clean the area Gently and apply lightly ( i have personally used Neosporin on a burn before, and the animal healed fine, but, it was a LIGHT burn, and not nearly as severe as this).
Call a vet in the AM, call a few if you have to, but make an appointment happen. This is probably going to be a little pricy if you have never brought the animal in before, but you WILL lose the animal if you dont know how to care for such a bad case.
You need to put some space between the bottom of the tank where the UTH is and the animal. Some newspaper ( take a few sheets and fold them up over the area inside the tank) and then put substrate down. You need to keep the snake from continuing to get burned.

Re: help! scale rot? looks terrible!
I found a vet hospital I can bring her to tonight.
Bringing her over RIGHT NOW

Re: help! scale rot? looks terrible!
:) good! keep us updated!

Re: help! scale rot? looks terrible!
I think they have been known to have hot spikes. If she is laying on it and it spikes she can get burned. This doesn't look like a quick burn. I am leaning towards scale rot from unsanitary conditions. How often do you change his bark?

Re: help! scale rot? looks terrible!
Ive used the small & med size the small gets 110 degrees mesured with a temp gun! the bigger one gets 130+ degrees without thermostat.

Vet says that it does appear to be a bacterial infection
How should I effectively clean her tank?
How can I better maintain the temperature (which does not seem to stay high enough without additional heat via lamp) and humidity?
What substrate should I be using? For now I'll just have her on newspaper after I clean the tank.

Re: help! scale rot? looks terrible!
something like that don't show up overnight?unless its a burn.but im not avet.

Re: help! scale rot? looks terrible!
It's absolutely amazing how many people come on here asking questions and havent even looked at the caresheets yet. If you haven't then I definitely recommend looking it over. If you're keeping her in a glass tank with screen lid (which I'm going to assume) then you need to somehow insulate the glass. It won't keep heat on its own, which is why you're having so much trouble. Most people I know use cork board from a craft store. Put it around three sides of the tank. If you dont like the look of it, you can cover the glass with decorative paper or background, and then place the cork board behind the paper so that you don't even see it.
Also, you need to keep about 3/4ths of the lid covered. Most will do this by wrapping aluminum foil around it and duct taping it down. I have seen others use plastic bags and whatnot. It jsut has to be a material that will not allow heat or humidity to get through.
To get humidity up, you can add a second bowl, or get a wider one. The depth doesn't really matter, but the wider the bowl the more humidity you will have.
Get rid of that bark substrate. It's been known to house all kinds of creepy crawlies and its very difficult to tell when the snake has soiled it. (Take it from someone who has used it before) I use either newspaper or paper towels for my substrates. It makes it obvious when I need to clean. Don't use harsh chemicals when cleaning the enclosure, either. I recommend getting something that is safe for use around humans and animals. Something "green" is usually ok. I use a product called Pet Focus which is antifungal, antibacterial, antiviral, anti everything really. See if you can get a hold of that.
I think that was everything. If you have more questions, keep asking. ;)
Good luck with your snake. That looks absolutely horrendous...

personally, here is what i did when my BP got hurt like a year and a half ago...
he got stuck and got his belly scales tore up.
the vet gave me shots to give him, and i cleaned him with watered down betadine.
i was told to put him in a rubbermaid, with clean paper towels, and a water dish.
i kept him warm with a human heat pad... but i had it regulated.
and i took temps constantly.
because his scales were damaged, i had to keep him super clean so he wouldnt get scale rot. he never did - so i'd suggest keeping her on paper toweling in a rubbermaid with clean water.
if she dumps the water, clean it out, put fresh paper in, and re-fill her dish.
keep the paper dry.
as for cleaning the tank... take everything out, and use a reptile safe cleaner. i would keep her in a tub for now, because it is easier to keep clean.
course thats my opinion.

Agree 100%. I would add doing cleaning on a regular schedule, once a week. I keep all my balls on newspaper, makes cleaning day easier. I clean with a 10% bleach solution, just have to make sure I dry it good before putting the snake back in. Insulating the tank and covering the top will help with heat and humidity. Would also suggest a tstat. What treatment did the vet use?

Wow. That was a very fast vet appt with the vet very close by. Good job. What did the vet give you for the bacterial infection? Did the vet say that it was a burn? Scale rot?
As everyone else has said, you need a thermostat immediately.
I clean my cages with soap and water and then spray with chlorhexadine. I let the chlorhex sit for a couple of minutes and then wipe down and air dry.
I strongly recommend using a paper substrate for now and cleaning very thoroughly so that there is never any wetness from urine, urates, poo, or water dish spillage. Again, a thermostat is a must. Reptile Basics sells them and you can expedite shipping.
I would really love to know what the vet prescribed for your snake's infection :)
-
Re: help! scale rot? looks terrible!
Good Job on finding a vet open late. You are very lucky our 2 emergency clinics do not see reptiles. Until your snake heals I would use papertowels as your substrate and throw the zoo med heat pad in the garbage or get a something to regulate it. (I know it's not a burn but those thing get ridiculus hot)
I use Shaklee Basic-G® Concentrated Germicide or 1.1 h20 & chlorahexi solution to disinfect and I use hot water and blue dawn to wash my tubs.
http://www.shaklee.net/cherylschell/product/BasicG
This a website you can use to buy the Basic-G.
Good Luck

Re: help! scale rot? looks terrible!
Well, i've got her home now, in a temporary tub (on newspaper with a hide in there) while I clean out her tank.
The doc said it did seem to be an infection, but wasn't very clear, and didn't seem totally certain.
Then again, I was pretty certain that it wasn't a burn because I keep a good monitor on the temperatures.
I came home with a tub of "Malaseb Pledgets" from the vet, which are Rayon/Polyester tabs with Miconazole (17.4mg) and Chlorhexidine Cluconate (20mg) and Alcohol.
The vet recommended that I clean her underbody with the tabs; as I was doing so, I noted that the skin did look more burned than infected at some points. The doc recommended I use Neosporin to treat the area, which my Dad (who doesn't like snakes) applied as I held her belly-up. She was surprisingly very calm, and kind of just watched as he did it, even though her body would squirm slightly at the touch and she was obviously uncomfortable. She didn't try to wrestle her way free though
I also cleaned out the tank, and as I was doing so, I realized that underneath the substrate, directly over the UTH, the temperature was definitely hot to the touch! I put my thermometer sensor directly on that spot, and wouldn't you know, the temp shortly rose above 120°F!
I'm thinking this is a burn now, and I will check back with the vet when I can. It was an expensive trip though, but I've definitely built a bond with Irie that I don't want to lose.

I agree with this. Keep a close eye on her, make sure the paper stays dry, and use a tub for now, because you can toss it into the dish washer and clean it easily.
In my tanks, I use concentrated Simple Green, just spray the tanks, wipe it down, then rinse with hot water in the shower (I've got one of those long massage showerhead thingies so it makes this really easy) Simple Green is safe and a really good cleaner, we use it around the house on pretty much everything, like our counters and what not.
When she's done healing, I'd suggest continue the use of papertowels/newsprint, or get aspen bedding or cypress mulch, these are good for humidity, but the cypress more so.
I hope your girl gets better :(
-
Re: help! scale rot? looks terrible!
Glad to hear that you got her to a vet and she is on her way to recovery. It definitely looked like a burn to me...and I know that my girl loves to shove all of the bedding out of the way and lay right on the glass.
You definitely need a thermostat. But after an expensive vet trip, at least start with a rheostat. A good thermostat can be kinda expensive but a rheostat can help tie you over until you are able to get one. But if you end up going with a rheostat, be aware that even on the lowest setting my heat pad would get up to 100 F, and I'd have to turn it off sometimes to keep the temps where they should be. They are definitely not a long term solution, but it will keep the temps lower.
Hopefully she will heal quickly and you can get the heat sources set up correctly so you won't ever have to see her poor belly like that again!!

Thank all of you so much for your concern and help! Everyone.
I will definitely get a rheostat ASAP. For now I've placed planks underneat the tank, and I'm keeping the thermometer directly on the glass to monitor the temp for the next 24hrs. I've got an acu-rite so it'll tell me Max/min temps. I'm not putting her anywhere near the tank right now.
As for the comment about insulating the tank. Is that something that is truly necessary? Or keeping her in a tub indefinitely? It seems a shame to have such a beautiful animal and not be able to see it.
Though I'm sure many of you are convinced at the moment that I'm undeserving of such a blessing... :(

Tubs are pretty much clear :)
i dont believe that the tub should be a perminant housing, i understand wanting to watch her...
but until she is done healing. a tub is a must. it is the easiest to clean. and keep things right.
and to be honest, we all make mistakes...
you got her to a vet - thats what matters, and she'll most likely heal up with no sign it even happened.

What's wrong with the Vet's actions???
I talked to them this morning and told them that it probably was a burn, and he recommended I return for some ointment that will soothe and help heal, but I don't know what it's called. When I get it I will let you all know
-
Re: help! scale rot? looks terrible!
I've come to a conclusion that it's most likely a burn because I moved her tank.
as I said before, I previously had her tank on top of a shelf with planks to give circulation underneath the tank to regulate the temperature, but at my dad's suggestion moved her temporarily to the floor.
Obviously the heat could not escape and it got too hot for her when she burrowed under her substrate, and since I did not handle her for two days, I did not see it

Alcohol!
and lack of any kinda of antibiotic

Re: help! scale rot? looks terrible!
There has been lots of good advice here so there is no need for me to rehash it but something I haven't seen is a warning about the type of neosporin you use.
Make sure the neosporin does not have pain killer... no Neosporin +, no extra strength polysporin, nothin...
My ball had scale rot (not this bad) but moving him into a tub (which can be kept super clean) along with daily cleanings and applications of neosporin he healed up in about 2 weeks. Just keep at it with what the vet says and he will heal up. It will probably start to look worse before it gets better because it will dry out... Looks really bad when it dries out, but once he sheds it will looks worlds better...

Yes, he recommended I use as little of the alcohol as possible. I squeezed out any excess from the pads. Also, Chlorhex, which is the main ingredient in the pads, as well as the skin cleanser liquid I bought, is an Antiseptic/Antimicrobial

Thank you, I've read that elsewhere as well, and made sure I didn't get any with pain killer. Any idea WHY that's an issue tho? Just wondering not doubting.
And now that I'm fairly certain its a burn, I'm feeling a bit more comfortable. That means it was a quick mistake, one that I can easily learn from, and one that she will survive, and after a few sheds, possibly without scars.
She seems to be doing pretty well
What a trooper :salute:

Re: help! scale rot? looks terrible!
It is such a shame when things like this happen because they are so easily avoided.
You did the right thing though. I remember reading a thread not to long ago about this ridicules story about how some one took this girls ball our of her tank while she was at the vet and beat it up and blah blah blah and then she asked for money. There are people on here all the time that come on here and tell every one what they did wrong and then refuse to listen to the advice and tell us how wrong we all are and they really know what is best.
Any who, long story short alot of people are stupid and do not try to help the animal. You have done every thing you knew how to do. I think it is great that you are trying your best and you are willing to spend the money to help this animal.

I am definitely trying to do everything I can to help her!
I got the ointment the vet prescribed: Silver Sulfadiazine/50gm.
I'm told it's a burn creme, and very soothing.
I came home and she was balled up under her hide, and when I took her out to clean the tub and her, she didn't want to unroll at first. Poor girl.
I coaxed her to open up, and soaked her in the diluted Chlorhex solution for about 10 minutes before taking her out and washing her off, and trying to get some of the unshed skin off.
I applied the Sulfadiazine liberally, though she'll slither it off soon.
She didn't want me touching her underneath at first, but after I began applying the creme, she let me finish. It must feel much better!
She's crawling around her tub now, and even looks happier, though I wish she'd understand that she needs to relax and not crawl around to heal right now...
Thank you all again for all of your help. I'm going to keep this thread updated for anyone who cares to know how she's doing, plus it's good for anyone else looking for burn treatment.
I wish I could edit my initial post!

I got the ointment the vet prescribed: Silver Sulfadiazine/50gm.
I'm told it's a burn creme, and very soothing.
I came home and she was balled up under her hide, and when I took her out to clean the tub and her, she didn't want to unroll at first. Poor girl.

Thats what my vet gave us when my dog got her leg ripped open... its to stop bacteria... get it on the edge of the belly scales.... just be gentle... but getting it in there is the only way it will stay and help keep bacteria away... :)

She seems to be doing pretty well
What a trooper :salute:
question what happens when you have a cut and use any amount of alcohol. it burns and also it drys out the wound and surrounding skin. peroxide is even worse to use on herps.
im refering to internal antibiotics!
