Hatched this one out today...
I hatched this little one out today. I tossed this bunch of eggs when digging for them so only 1 of 5 hatched out.
Before it popped out of the egg...

After it launched itself out of the egg container and ran up the wall to the ceiling...

Thanks Deborah.
She is a blackheaded monitor (v. tristis tristis). We say she...cause thats what I need more of ;)
Re: Hatched this one out today...
That's so cool. Made me giggle reading that too. What a hottie.

Re: Hatched this one out today...
Strong work Daniel! I was wondering how those were doing for you! :gj:
Re: Hatched this one out today...
Very nice Tristis tristis.
One of my favorite species.
Re: Hatched this one out today...
Thanks all. I have two more eggs from another clutch sitting in the incubator that should hatch out around the beginning of the year and hopefully some more eggs on the way too. I have a completely empty old Rare Earth Freedom Breeder dwarf monitor rack that needs to be filled up so hopefully I can manage to hatch a few more out :D
Between the tristis, ackies, and storrs monitors that I keep....the tristis have been by far the easiest to care for. They would be my #1 pet monitor, but they are a little shy compared to ackies....and very very fast ;)
Re: Hatched this one out today...
Aww, what a little cutie, and what a way to enter the world. :giggle:
Congrats Daniel.
Re: Hatched this one out today...
Absolutely breath taking... great work! It always amazes me how PERFECT baby reptiles are when they hatch... That girl is gorgeous!
Re: Hatched this one out today...

This baby is a blackheaded monitor (v. tristis tristis) which is also know as the mournful goanna by some. They get to be about the same body size as Ackies, but have longer tails and a different personalities.
Here is a shot of mom with a belly fully of fuzzy mice(and hopefully eggs :D):

Blackheaded monitors are a great first monitor. Care is just the same as any other small monitor.
If you are interested in getting one, I would check out kingsnake.com's classifieds. I believe Doug Price of Price Animal Company has some for sale now. Other than Doug not many people consistantly produce offspring.
Re: Hatched this one out today...

Re: Hatched this one out today...

Thanks.
Blackheaded monitors are right behind ackies in numbers being produced in captivity. They are more commonly captively breed than alot of other species......but you could probably count the number of people who are breeding them at the moment with both hands...
...not many are successful in breeding monitors in general....so in comparison to some other reptiles, I may be "one of the few."
