Green Tree Python, in you're opinion yay or nay?
Ok, i have experience with many, and honestly i love GTP's. Never been tagged by one, although i have been tagged by a ATB once or twice. They wanted to give me a 'kiss.' My GTP used to curl up in my lap. It didn't enjoy being handled too much but it would tolerate it. Once nighttime hit i wouldn't bother trying to do anything with him. People say they are horrible in temperment, their bite is one of the most destructive, etc etc... That wasn't my personal experience with them
Anyway, in your personal experience do you like or dislike GTP's?

I love their look and would love to have some. I have heard that they have a bad temperment. But to answer your question I LOVE THEM!:gj:

Love them! I have had my little yellow worm on a stick for about 5 months now and it is all around a great little snake. Never struck at me and has a great feeding response.

Mine is handleable during the day -- altho I do think he prefers not to be -- but he tolerates a bit of it.
At night anything that enters his domain is considered food -- we've come to an understanding on that and things seem to have worked out just fine -- I've not yet been bit (knock on wood).
:D

I would definitely consider getting one in the future for a really nice display snake. :]
A little bite every once in a while is good for me.

Have you noticed much of a temperament difference between the two? Some say the GT pythons are more aggressive than the AT or ET boas but I've never heard this from an owner of both. Care to share your expertise with us?

I'm also looking at getting a chondro or an ATB (since I've still got the freakin aboreal cage that the people sold me when I bought my first BP at the beginning of the year) but with most of my experience up to this point being with colubrids and balls is there one or the other that you guys who've had both would recommend? I know they can be a tough nut to crack sometimes but I think they are just absolutely beautiful :D

Well my atb is a sweetheart now adays. He will come right out of the tub onto my arm when i need to get him out for a cage cleaning. But when i first got him it was a different story, i had to use the hook with him. The gtp's act tough until they are out of thier tubs once out they are fine. In general i guess i know what to look for in terms of them wanting to bite me, but most of the time i do my cleaning in the afternoons when they are pretty much sleeping and feeding at night. From time to time they will wake up and pull the little s curl on me and act like they mean business but i change out the paper towel substrate and nothing. I took a few bites from only one of them, my aru neonate it stings but nowadays he will watch my hands and if i get too close i can see that he will bite me. In general though they arent as bad as people say, however be ready to take a bite if you end up with either an atb or a gtp, because it will happen:gj:.

Well i dont like the whole starter arboreal idea to be honest. You either want an atb, gtp, or etb. They are different snakes. Now the difference is atb's are little bit more forgiving of husbandry errors, and gtp's and especially etb's are not. So the only way to keep these guys thriving is to make sure you do your research and keep your husbandry up to par & spot on. I started babbling, to answer your question as to which one i suggest its really up to you, do your research and see which one like the looks of, which one you feel up to taking on as far as husbandry requirements, etc.... If it were up to me... Hmmm, im always up for a new chondro!:salute:

Lol yeah, I'm leaning towards the ATB at this point. But don't worry I'm not an impulse buyer. I always do all my homework first before getting a new species of animal. I love the look of most chondros though so IDK it's still kind of a toss up lol. I'm gonna be getting a couple books on them first before I commit to anything

I agree with you completely. ATB's seem very easy to care for, comparably, but i love the look of a chondros.

Absolutely. If you go up there ask Andy to see his chondros and his ETBs they've got some absolutely beautiful ones upstairs! They do a tour of the breeding facility on Saturdays at 4, it's totally worth it they pull out some awesome animals and quite a few that you would never see anywhere else. Kara is awesome too :D I went up there last weekend hoping to see her but I forgot that NARBC was going on *doh* lol.

Re: Green Tree Python, in you're opinion yay or nay?
Chondros RULE!!!!! Many are actually pretty mellow, but like Tosha mentioned at night they are little hunters and are best left alone. If you can keep a carpet python, then you can handle a chondro. Babies are a little fragile so it is important to get one that is well started.

GTP!! I have one and he/she is totally ok with being held day or night. I haven't tried to hold it at night but a buddy of mine did with no problems. mine has only bitten me when i took him out of the container he was shipped in.
they get kinda pissy just before a shed like most snakes do.

The best advice I can give for acquiring a chondro is to go for a captive bred animal from a knowledgeable breeder. It's your best bet on getting a healthy, feeding baby, and the breeder will be a good source of troubleshooting and valuble information about your chondro.

Good point, not too many people think about this when they purchase an animal of any species. If the breeder seems hesitant to answer any questions or help out is he really concerned about the well-being of the animal?
food for thought.

Re: Green Tree Python, in you're opinion yay or nay?
In my experience with chondros and ATBs, chondros are much easier to work with. I have around 30 or so chondros and have been keeping and breeding them for over 10 years. With chondros, during the day they tend to stay wrapped up on their purch even with messed with for cleaning. ATBs on the other hand, tend to be all over the place. Of all my chondros, I would say I can handle 70% of them without the thought of being bitten.....except at night. lol. I love chondros!
