    Emergency, need help
First thing tomorrow morning, if it's not too late, is taking my BP to the vet. He may only be a normal, but he's my favorite of all my snakes. Well, I have been out of the town over the weekend, and just made it back. Apparently my roommates through a huge party over the weekend, and someone got into my room to mess with my animals. For the most part it seems nothing serious, except that of my lone snake on a rheostat. Apparently someone slid the dial all the way on, and it's been that way for what I can assume to be two days, stuck at 120+ (my thermometer only reads up to 120). I knew that radiant heat panel was an accident waiting to happen. But... the damage has already been done. He's alive, but limp/bloated past the first 10 inches, and he's almost 3 1/2 ft long. He looks as though he's struggling to breathe, and he's still rather alert, but most of his body feels as though it's already dead. Is there ANYTHING I can do to help him until tomorrow when he goes to the vet?

I don't know whether he's been cooked, or they had him out and somehow paralyzed him, or what... all I know is that I'm freakin out a bit. And of all my snakes, it had to be this one.

Umm I'm pretty sure your roommates are good people and all but they really should be more responsible and NOT let anybody into your room. There's ways to ensure stupid drunk people don't wander places they shouldn't. Good luck is all I can say, I hope everything works out okay.

You should really work something out with your roommate/s. Let them know how serious this situation is, and that if anything like this happens again, and it's at all their fault, they take care of vet bills or replacement bills.
With expensive animals, and living animals, it should be in writing.

I really hope he survives, and that something good can come out of this. I'm really sorry this had to happen to you. This is part of the reason I hate alcohol, it turns people into idiots, who couldn't care less about an animals life.

Good luck! I've got all my hopes out for you.

Assuming I now believe his back to be broken, is there really any conceivable way to transport him to the vet, or any possible treatment? I mean, just running my fingers down his side, it goes from normal firm feeling, to a bloated almost post rigamortis limp feeling, with very little transition. He also "passed" what looked like a urate with the consistency of maple syrup with a little blood in it. I want to wait to see if the vet can do anything, but I don't want him to suffer any more.

Oh, wow. I'm totally at a loss for words right now. If it were me, I don't think I'd be able to do anything but sit on the floor and cry until the vet appointment. I'm sure you are doing everything you can. I would make sure the basics are covered - keep him warm, don't move him too much, etc. and other than that, maybe keep some water very close to him. With him getting cooked like that, and being unable to move, I'd worry about dehydration.

I know some vets offer 24/7 emergency phone numbers on their machines or on their website. I think this warrants an emergency call if you have the option available to you.

Please keep us posted. :please: I'm sending all my good thoughts and wishes to your poor little skid (scaley kid).

Edit: as for transport and hope of treatment, I wouldn't rule anything out until a vet can look at him. Don't give up on him -- you may be surprised how well he does. Who knows? To transport him, I would wrap him in towels so he doesn't get jostled around too much, and put him in a box/carrier. Set him on the floor of the car instead of the seats. For some reason it seems to be a smoother ride down there.

I'm really REALLY hoping for good news on this one. :/

Did the roommates offer any insight into what might have happened?

Ddi someone try to handle a snake and get bit and throw the snake? What makes you think his back is broken?

Im sorry to hear of your troubles and hope that everything turns out for the best.

I was assured that no one went into my room... that they knew of... key words there.

The reason I believe his back to be broken is just that he appears paralyzed from a certain distinct point in his body, down the rest of the way. Almost as if, two thirds of him is already dead. I had fed him right before I left town, so maybe just the extreme heat caused a gaseous eruption in his stomach as the prey broke down, which would have the effects of causing infection and bloating in the general vicinity of the rupture as he went septic, and swelling putting pressure on the spinal nerve causing him to be paralyzed from said point down. Problem is, neither of these options really provide any light at the end of the tunnel.

I would get a locking door knob or better room mates. If there is anything that we can do let us know. I don't know how we could help but if you need it I am sure many will do what they can.

Ben, it was very sad to come across this news from you. I have had a heating accident before as well that killed some snakes and almost killed a couple more. The rat in the digestive system of your snake is probably a big problem. I hope your snake pulls through but I know you will make the best decisions for him at the vet visit. Very sorry for your misfortune.

    So sorry to hear that.

Same thing happened to me 2 weeks ago when I went home for the weekend from school. Someone had gotten into my room and decided to play with the thermostat on my crested gecko cage. Good thing the heat was supplied as a small hotspot cause they would have been cooked by the time i got back.

    Hope everything turns out ok

    Re: Emergency, need help
Well, back from the vet. According to the vet, he has a broken spinal cord and a number of ribs. Given the circumstances, the Vet believes that someone must have dropped him and then stepped on him. Whether it was on purpose or accident, she couldn't tell. Top it off with them cranking the heat up, most of him is already dead. What he "passed" last night, wasn't urates, but bodily sewage. So if the broken back wasn't bad enough, he's gone septic. So, I'm selfishly keeping him alive for a few minutes before I go put him in the freezer.

Ben, I don't know how to even begin to express my feelings to you on the needless loss of this very special snake. Just know that my heart hurts for yours and what you have to do because some idiot was this uncaring and stupid around your snakes. I hope the word goes around to your friends and this person spends even one second feeling a tinge of regret for what he or she did that night.

Big hugs, Ben my thoughts are with you.
