Stink Over Big Cheese
http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcont...y.1e649c6.html
"FORT WORTH – The Big Cheese Rodent Factory has been causing a big stink for its neighbors.
Many residents and companies say the ammonia and spoiled meat odors wafting from the tan, nondescript building without a sign aren't just a nuisance but a health hazard. They have complained to the city that the company's activities – breeding more than half a million rats and mice a year for local zoos and research facilities – aren't allowed in its current zone.
On Tuesday the City Council will vote on a zoning change that would allow Big Cheese to stay in business there."
I hope things go well for them. I'd hate to lose Big Cheese!

Re: Stink Over Big Cheese
Hmm I see how that can get irritating, I wonder if they thought about that prior to opening? lol But we all need mice so, i vote they dont have to move, cause if they do move most people who order from them monthly etc... may possibly have to wait a bit to get there next shipment.

Re: Stink Over Big Cheese
Yeah, I've been out there several times to pick up live mice, and it definitely doesn't smell great. Hopefully the new system they are ready to put in place will help that situation, if the zoning works out in their favor.

Re: Stink Over Big Cheese
Does anyone happen to know the smallest order they will ship out?

Re: Stink Over Big Cheese

Re: Stink Over Big Cheese
Anyone know how long they've been in business at that location before the complaints started? If they've been in business there for awhile why did everyone just start to complain now?
Maybe a bunch of big activated carbon air scrubbers would help?
And what's the deal with spoiled meat odors? I can see the ammonia from rodent urine, but why would there be dead rotting rodents? Aren't the rodents frozen after they are killed?
-
Re: Stink Over Big Cheese
I can say that I have never smelled rotting meat when I've been there. And the mice I've picked up have always been clean and healthy.

When you breed that many mice, rats, etc a year you have to expect some of them to die.
Also, I think the freezing process is what kills the mice.

It says here they are killed humanely Which I'm assuming means using CO2 or something, not freezing them alive

Re: Stink Over Big Cheese
From what i heard on the radio this morning, they got the zoning changed and are allowed to stay. They just have to do more upgrades by Nov 1.
This is from yesterday. ( still looking for todays to verify the radio)
http://www.myfoxdfw.com/myfox/pages/...Y&pageId=3.2.1
If the council approves it, Big Cheese has until Nov. 1 to install its odor mitigation plan, which includes an air treatment system and an enclosed trash bin for waste, said Brian Boerner, the city's director of environmental management.

Re: Stink Over Big Cheese
Yeah, I remember reading something about this, it definitely doesn't smell that good. But the last time I went to get feeders (about a month ago) it did smell a lot better. Not sure if they had any air clean up systems in place yet, but it was better...

Yea i was there last week and there was no smell. The people that are complaining are crazy. Their factory smells better than my small room of mice.
