Fire x Pastel name
A few years back someone I know, Brandon Boeke, produced the first ever Pastel x Fire cross. He said he wanted to call it the "Nova Ball".
Now, I see people selling/displaying Pastel x Fire crosses as "FireFly's".
I don't get it. Someone renamed a morph that was already named, and other people are calling it that. Kinda upsets me because I know the guy to produce the first one, which is by far the best one I've ever seen.
Any thoughts?

Re: Fire x Pastel name
Interesting . At times I think the naming of morphs just becomes a tad bit crazy at times ,IMHO. Ben Renick refers to it as a Nova tho'
http://www.benrenick.com/fire_bp.html
Wonder if might be the original name was not exposed often enough , though I doubt it , ya get a new morph ya tell the world and its brother I s'pose.

Re: Fire x Pastel name
I think it has to do more with professional courtesy. Mike Wilbanks is the one that termed the fire cross as a "firefly". Brandon bought his fire from Mike and may have got it at a discount and hence, Mike was the one who got to name it.

That could be it. But I, for one, would still refer to it as the Nova. I have all the respect in the world for Mike and he is a great guy, but I think Nova fits it better.

So if I get this right then it was Mike Wilbanks who actually produced the FireFly ( Fire x Pastel ) yeah ? Then Brandon buys a Fire ( NOT a Firefly ) and does the same breeding an calls it a Nova ?
If thats the case then I have to agree , professional courtesy should be observed. Meaning Mike got first call.
RKO ...surely the original name has to be respected ? your OP

kinda suggests that to me here .Whether Nova fits or not is academic surely . It was already named , by the original breeder. Not wanting to upset anyone here but your almost saying ( almost)
anyone can rename the same morph to a better fitting name ( in there mind ) if the breed th esame .

Re: Fire x Pastel name
I may be wrong so don't quote me on this.
It is my understanding that Brandon produced the first fire x pastel. He named it "Nova". But between him and Mike, the name was changed to "Firefly". Why? Not sure. Maybe Brandon can straighten it out. I haven't talked to him in some time but will see what I can find out.

Re: Fire x Pastel name
Im confused now , lol , two breeders , one morph , two names .
My interest is that the Firefly/Nova is a truely stunning cross , I own a Pastel and wanna eventually breed that to Fire , I like knowing the history of morphs etc , so this is a good thread in determining the history of the Fire x Pastel morph. I am not looking to upset anyone here , just wanna learn more about a wonderful morph.

Brandon produce the FIRST Fire x Pastel cross and called it a 'Nova'.
Then Mike produced a Fire x Pastel cross about a year later and called it a 'FireFly'.

Re: Fire x Pastel name
Half the morph names are totally confusing anyways.
Whatever it is the look amazing.

Ok that clears that up ! It was getting to be a tad bit confusing ( ok ahm easily confuzzled ! )
So it would seem the honours , so to speak , go to Brandon .
There ought to be a place where breeders can register the name of morphs and they stick. Least that way , original name ( perceived good or bad ) remains true.
Either way it is an awesome cross in my eyes.

Re: Fire x Pastel name
I'm with Raul on this one, the morph naming craze is getting out of hand. Not to mention some of the names are just horrible. Why not just call them what they are? Just as an example, bradboa was showing off his pastel kingpin that he produced and everyone jumped all over it because it was a pastel/butter/pin rather than a pastel/lesser/pin. Now it's been dubbed the "emperor pin" ... talk about confusing, eh?

Re: Fire x Pastel name
I think whoever creates a new combo and announces it first should get to name it, and once it's named it should be official, no matter how crazy the name. Creating a first is an achievement, and the creator should get the honor. I hope to be the first one to make a combo one day, and I'm looking forward to naming it something ridiculous. Plus, things in this hobby are confusing enough without multiple names being thrown around for the same snake. That's my 2 cents.

Re: Fire x Pastel name
There are a lot of names out there for different morphs and combos, and some people say it's confusing. It is confusing, but with a billion possibilities out there it's to be expected. The naming might get confusing, but it's still easier than saying all the different names that make up a combo. Especially once you get into 4-5 morph combos. That's just part of being involved in a hobby with SO MANY base morphs and possibilities.

Re: Fire x Pastel name
what makes you think this dude was the first to produce it, because he claims it?

Umm...because he was!
I like to call morphs what they are....pastel fires, but if I had to call the fire pastel anything I like the name Nova better...
Fire pastels are my fav morph ever.

Wow, I can't believe this came up. I still laugh about the conversation between them in TX that I was the 3rd wheel in. Very long night at the bar. Thanks Mike for picking up the tab. :gj: However, the hangover on the plane ride home was hell.

There is a picture for proof. It came out over a year ago before Mike's did. Though I cannot find it.
The most recent picture I can find of the pastel fire cross can be found in this thread and he says he got it from Brandon. As I said, Brandon's is by far the nicest one I'v ever seen.

I gotta hear about it through the day in TX, wish I could have heard the convo that night!
Brandon produced the first Fire/Pastel wanted to call it Nova, then him and Mike decided that Firefly would work best (in a nutshell). Sorry about the confusion on my site, I built that page a pretty long time ago, I totally forgot to change it!

Didn't Mike post pics of some 07 Fireflys he produced on his forum and it stated a big brawl between the two about the name?
