Where to get aspen from in bulk
I am spending more money in Aspen then I am feed. Right now I am getting it at petsmart. $12 for 2 cubic feet that expands to 4 cubic feet.

Anyone have any ideas on where I can get it cheaper????

Tractor Supply Company. It's not as finely shredded, but it is a few bucks cheaper.

Shoot Mike I'll try to dig up the old thread but I remember folks talking about buying huge bags of aspen for really cheap. I think it was sold by a store like TSC or the like (farm supply) and is actually meant for a horse's stall bedding but it's aspen so it's fine for our rodents too. Darned if I can remember the brand name of it though.

I buy a couple bales of Harlan at shows. I got 2 at the fire show for I think $10/ea. You should have picked some up at Daytona!

Only people I know in FLA that gets Harlan is South Florida Rodents and a rodent guy near Graziani. May be worth the drive if you buy a few bales.

what is a bale??? The bags I get from petsmart are 2 cubic feet of conpressed aspen... that expands to 4 cubic feet.... how does this amount compare to a 50 lb "bale"???

Sorry, bale is probably not the right term. I just call it that cause it looks like a small hay bale. It says Premium quality horse bedding on the side and comes in a bale shaped bag that measures about 30" X 18" X 11" (I just took a tape measure to it) and says 'All Natural aspen fibers', 'Multi screened to minumize dust', 'highly absorbent', and the weight is listed as 'more then 43 lbs' I suppose the weight is variable depending on how much moisture is contained in the wood fibers. In any case, it's a heck of a lot cheaper buying it from a farm supply store then from a pet shop or from the pet section of a department store.

Packaged as 3 cubic feet and expands to 9 cubic feet for $12.50

This is what I use for my snakes but use the Corn Cobb bedding for rats

So, is it okay to use one of these compressed aspen "bales" with snakes even though it isn't shredded as fine as typical aspen snake bedding?

The "bales" of Harlen are shredded. Looks just like the zoo-med stuff. Only 1/4 the cost.
