Starting off with cricket breeding... any tips?

:) I decided now would be a good time to start breeding crickets so I have my ten and fifteen gallon tanks ready and now I'm just awaiting some help.

What substrate should I put the crickets on? Are there good foods (other than the canned stuff I already have) that they'll eat? What kind of things should I put in their tank? Do I ever have to seperate the crickets? :D Thanks.

tip 1: buy a nose plug
tip 2: buy a backup nose plug
tip 3: DONT FORGET THE DAMN NOSE PLUG lol

i order 1000 at a time and man DO THEY SMELL!

Keep alot of egg crates in the tanks, and in one of the corners keep coconut husk in a little tub for them to lay in( make it a little damp so the eggs will not dry out.) Id say go ahead and buy an order of 500 or so online and go through and pick out 50 or so females and a few males. you have to remove the males after a few days because he will find and eat the eggs out of the laying material. Over all once you see eggs( they lay ALOT of them per cricket, they look like small rice) and after a week or two if you keep them warm you should have alot of babys hatching. Look online for a more detailed way on breeding but that is pretty much it. Remember, pinhead crickets are TINY, and ear easily killed. It seems that it takes them forever to grow and you kill alot of them on accident. Id recommend Roaches, as nasty as they seem they are no where near as bad as crickets. If a cricket escapes, it WILL find a place that you cant get to and it WILL chirp as loud as it can if its a male. Roaches need warmth and will die, if if the tub tipped over they would die and not breed so there is no worry about infestation as long as you do not live in Flordia:P Hope this helps- Matt

Is it okay if the egg crates are like... 'foamish'? Most of the time I see cardboard egg crates in the cricket's cage. Oh, and how can you tell if the cricket is male or not? I've heard they're smaller but I can't tell the two genders apart too well.... D:

I tried to bring up roaches (though I'm kinda scared of 'em... heh...) to my mom and she FLIPPED out. So yeah, I might have done it but its not an option now since I live in my mom's house. I've also though about mealworms but I've heard that they're hard to breed... Might have to look them up though...

Stay away from crickets!!!! If you need a small feeder insect buy some turkistan roaches, if you can deal with larger feeder insects go with dubia roaches.

turks are the same size as crickets minus the horrible smell, the noise and the smell. Nothing special is needed to breed roaches. Food and Water :)
