what do you photograph your snakes on?
After searching forever and not finding anything I decided to start this thread on backgrounds. I want to know what are the various backgrounds that everyone uses when photographing their snakes.

for example, I do not have a designated area, so I end up using the dining room table. I use material, either a piece of faux white mink fur or black satin. I use a large cardboard box as the "wall" behind the snake and cover it and the table for my backdrop. Then I place the snake and use the overhead lighting, any ambient outdoor lighting and the flash from my camera.

I want to try different backgrounds but am curious as to what other people use. Post a picture to give an example, we wont mind, we like pictures. :D So, share with us what you do.

    my examples:
new pinnie male on the faux fur - you can see the fur sticking up

him on the black satin - you can see the soft sheen

I use white melamine. I crack the blinds on the window open to get just the right sunlight and don't use any flash.

    Here's a few examples

I prefer to do all shots outdoors whenever possible - mother nature provides the best lighting.

On a rock, piece of log.... natural looks best imo. :)

I use different things but love mother nature best. I like to put the snakes in our flowers, on a tree branch (who says balls aren't arboreal!), on rocks or logs. I've also photographed in tubs, in a light box I set up, on fish tank rocks (black and river stones) and I've also taken pictures on black silk sheets I had for my old bed that are just sitting in the closet.

I personally love outdoor pictures best though.

I use spot lights for lighting and a couple different things for background depending on what mood I'm in.

My favorite is moss because it reminds me of some of the great naturalistic photos from books I read in my early years of herp keeping.

I just started to "try" taking better photographs....so far I have been using whatever they happen to be on as it seems to give a better candid shot....these were taken in their enclosures...not the best but my best so far...LOL

All of my other pictures are taken outside during the day in a shady area, they turn out pretty well that way since I know nothing about lighting pictures - I let the sun and a tree do it for me

Come to think of it... a few nights ago I took some photos on a brown placemat-type thing. Icky flash photography, but they turned out not too shabby:

All the acrylic I have are remnants from my fathers cabinet shop from over 10 years ago. Finding small pieces to purchase can be difficult. Oh and if you paint acrylic you just end up with a painted surface like any other.

I'm with you on the last photo, I'd love to have all those snakes too!

Oh well, would have been nice. I love your pictures on the black acrylic, the reflective quality is nice.
Is the black acrylic you use semi-opaque or totally opaque?

I think everyone else wants those snakes in the last photo too. :D

I like white paper board, and outside photos in the shade.

I STILL haven't found a nice black background. It bothers me to no end. Everything I have tried just reflects too much light and looks crappy. :(

try using black material. I have a piece of black satin that has a sheen on one side and is matte on the other side. Depending upon my mood and the snake and the lighting around me usually decides which side I want to use. If you look in my post at the beginning of this thread, the pic with my pinnie is on the fabric with the sheen side up. Hope that helps ya Connie.

Thanks woman! :) I liked the idea of fabric, but everytime I took a pic with some, my fabric just wasn't black enough, or you could see every little lint speckle, or the threads were to obvious... Bah, I will never be happy.

The closest thing I liked so far was a piece of powder coated steel, but I didn't get a whole ton of time to practice with it so it reflected too much light for my tastes.

I use black colored paper, black cardboard, gold colored paper, cloth, whiteboard, and other things.

More recently, the black cardboard has been the material of choice, but... its getting messy, so I may change it up. I use different colors for different animals (to enhance colors).

I use a piece of Melamene with a 5200K photo light, flash on, and adjust the f stop depending on what the ambient light is like.

They come out like this with no retouching at all. :D

Lots of really nice pictures in this thread :gj:

I just play around with a bunch of stuff -- I try to use different backgrounds that will bring out the colors of our snakes. I've found backgrounds that make some snakes look good others don't looks so good on -- so its kind of something to play with. I'm far from the best photographer and use a simple point and shoot camera -- occasionally I get a decent shot. :D

I like to place them on a clean white piece of melamine. No reflection, no dust.. I tried furry fabrics but my camera tends to pick up every gram of dust and magnify it! Makes it very hard to photograph my cat.
