I'm told I swear too much
My Grandmother gave me the "evil eye" and a talking to for my use of foul language the other day. The really pathetic part is I didn't even realize I was cursing. It was just a normal conversation and out of no where I drop a few curse words.
My wife says the same thing about me so I've been trying to clean up my language but it isn't easy. I think I got in to this habit when I was in the military and it's stuck with me ever since.
Have any of you tried to do this before? If so what helped you?

Re: I'm told I swear too much
It's all just a habit in the end. I think the only way to do this is to constantly have the change you want to make running throughout your head during the day. You'll eventually slip up and curse and then you'll catch yourself. Its amazing how many times you do something when it becomes habit that you don't realize until you start to pay attention for it.
Sorta like when you or someone you know buys a car, then all of a sudden you're seeing that car everywhere.

Yeah I'm just going to have to keep making a mental note of it.
But ya know what really sucks? Everytime I curse now my wife punches me in the arm! You ever get hit in the same spot like 50 times? That hurts and it makes me want to swear more.
I just can't win. :(

I'm down for that. I don't even need a reason.

Re: I'm told I swear too much
I swear too much too. I put sailors to shame. I've tried to curb my bad habit...but I haven't found anything that works. If you find something that works....let me know. Most people around me don't complain about it...well except my Mom, but I think I'm rubbing off on her, now she swears too, something she NEVER did before.

Re: I'm told I swear too much
They say if you do anything for 21 days, it becomes a habit. So, see if you can commit to not swearing for 21 days.
Keep a jar - every time you swear, put a dollar in it. After you've become swear free - treat yourself to something with the money you've put in there! ;)

Re: I'm told I swear too much
I completely understand the tazer thing...:D
but a less evasive thing that works is placing a rubber band on your wrist and each time you catch yourself swearing....
SNAP!!
after awhile, you'll stop

Re: I'm told I swear too much
To me it's more of a situational habit. Many years ago when I used to work in construction, swearing was so common place that it just became part of your regular conversation. The problem came at the end of the day when I left the work site it was hard to shut that off and my mom got mad at me several times for my foul mouth. Even today when I'm in with a group of people who swear a lot, I'll pick up on that and then later at home my wife will comment on my language. A lot of times I just don't realize I'm doing it. I don't know what to do about it other then getting in the habit of thinking about what you say before you say it, which can be a lot harder then it sounds. However it's probably a good habit to get into even for people who don't swear a lot. Just take a breath, count to 5, and think about what you're going to say before you say it.

Re: I'm told I swear too much
I didn't swear nearly as much until I started working in the shop.. that's all there really is to do there. Alot of times I notice the same thing. I cuss alot and Shannon beats me :( I think once it's a habit it's nearly impossible to stop.

Re: I'm told I swear too much
Realization is the first step...
Knowing that you do it and trying to not do it again is the MOST important thing.
You just have to pay more attention to what you say.

The butt chewing I took was the worst part. My Grandmother chewed in to me real fierce. You know how those old girls can mentally shrink ya when they get mad? Well Grandma shrunk me. :(
"Such a nice and handsome young man is what people used to say about you, but now you're just a filthy potty mouth! One of these days you'll either learn or you won't. Such a shame."
:weirdface
I got owned.

Re: I'm told I swear too much
Earl, you probably picked it up in boot camp. When I was in Basic Training in the Army way back in 1969 the F word was used in every spoken sentence for 8 weeks by everyone present and it was hard for most of us to stop saying it. Nowadays profanity only comes out of me when I am angry. Fortunately, I can control my typing.
