    Stolen Boulder !!!!!!
Who the hell steals a friggin boulder from someones yard!? I had a 2 foot wide and 3 foot tall stone on the left side of my front yard with flowers planted around it. It was a decorative corner piece.
The damn thing is gone today and the flowers are trampled down.
WTF! How do you even move the thing? It weighed a ton. That was on my property and now it's stolen. Now I have a patch of dirt and trampled/dying flowers in it's place.
I can't believe some people. They will steal anything.

Sorry to hear that. It was probably suppose to be a joke. I seen an article in the local paper where someone was cutting down trees (fairly large trees) and stealing them a few years back. Where I live people steal the copper out of AC units too. I'm glad I have some large protective dogs.

    Odd.
Maybe the garbage man thought you were throwing it away? ;]

Ask neighbors around if they saw anything and look at other yards close to yours for it.

Total disbelief. I must have stared at the spot for 15 minutes trying to figure out what happened.
This boulder has been on in the same spot for almost 10 years!

I'm gonna have to go with the idea that someone probably did this more as a joke than wanting that rock for themselves. Who knows, you might even find it dumped in a ditch or on the side of the road not too far from your house.

Actually, have any of you ever looked into the cost of landscape rocks? They can be pretty darn expensive. Expensive enough, in the hundreds to thousands of dollars range, for an enterprising individual to round up some day labor and go rock lifting.

Lifting....get it? Because they are not only stealing/lifting the rock but they are actually LIFTING the rock to steal it.

LOL LOL LOL Man oh man, some days I just crack me up.

Seriously though, it may have had enough value to make it worth stealing.

I stole a very large rock from my friends yard one time. He called me the next day to tell me, and I was all like... really that sucks, who would do such a thing? Then I waited six months, and had it engraved, and gave it back to him for Christmas!!! He cried.

We had a guy in Rockford driving around putting orange X's on trees the way the city would mark them for removal. Then come back 2 days later and cut them down. He got all the free firewood he wanted. So watch your trees too!:O

While its kinda lame to steal a rock, its kind of funny too.

I knew a few people who would steal Garden Gnomes, take pictures of them in various places, and put them back with some of the pictures at a later date.

Im sure its not exactly right.... but at least the people got their gnomes back, and some funny pictures :D

    Beware the ninja.

EDIT: I just wanted to note that I didn't do this to be mean...I fully agree that it's wrong to steal anything, regardless of the reason...but I was bored and the thought of "WHY would someone steal a boulder..? Is it just... 'Oh..look...I think I'll steal a boulder today.'? The thought amused me, is all. I'm not trying to make fun of her...just the inherent humor in such a random thing being taken.

hmmmm now that is really odd, did you ask your neighbors if they saw or heard anything suspicious?

When I was a kid, my dad always put the most Christmas lights on the house. One night he went inside to get something, someone STOLE the lights off our bushes. Sad huh?

I agree with wilomn, we have a landscaping supply place near my house , I drove by it late late at night and I pondered how many people steal from them. They have no fences, no sensor lights, no dogs and no cameras - very small town and trusting. I could totally see someone ripping them off for a giant rock, and if they would do it from a supplier, they would do it from a house.

    Re: Stolen Boulder !!!!!!
Well, I found out what happened.
Public Works for the town removed it. They claimed they sent me a letter saying I had 10 days to move it or it would be removed by them. Evidently they thought it would be in the way when they come to install the new curb on the street.
I explained I never received a letter but that didn't matter to them. They claim to have sent it and that gives them justification to come and remove it since I didn't within the time frame they supposedly gave me.
When I told them that the crew that removed it trampled all of the flowers, they basically told me too bad. The crew was instructed to remove the stone and they cannot be worried about flowers when the homeowner ignores the letter that was sent. I NEVER got a letter. Very, very unhelpful and unapologetic people work for the town. At least now I know what happened but it still is a pretty sad that my tax money paid for these buffoons to come out and trample my yard and take stuff and I have no recourse.

I'd talk to a lawyer about this one Steve. U.S. Mail is not considered proper service out here. It has to be certified and signed for.

You may well have a case that could make you enough for a new morph or two if you stick it out.

They didn't tell you. They took your rock. They messed up your yard. They stressed you out and they cost you money since you spent hours of time and gallons of gas looking for that rock.

Didn't you and your wife have your first kiss next to it? Isn't that why it was in your front yard? Didn't your kid take his first steps in front of it? Hasn't it been decorated with christmas lights in the winter and hidden eggs in the spring?

That was a pretty special rock if I recall what you've told of it correctly.

I gotta tell ya man, there were some days when you were just going on and on and on about your rock and how great it was and what you did with it to such an extent that I wanted to bop you on the nose just to get you to stop.

Well, your rock your call, but I'd at least look into it.

Not sure if I can do anything. They compared this letter to a tax bill. Just because you didn't recieve it in the mail doesn't mean you are exempt from interest if the payment is late.

You have no case. You placed the boulder and flowers on public property and they need not notify you to remove them. It would have been decent of them to notify you but they are not required to do so. I have many years of experience from dealing with these matters throughout my working life.

it could be worse man. the town i live in, we had some bad storms in june and some branches took out some wires, causing a lot of power outages. so this month they had crews come in and cut these trees down that were close-ish to any power lines. now these are 100+ year old hardwoods in people's front yards... not public property but apparently the power company and/or the city get precidents over the taxpayers. the ones that weren't completely cut down were basically cut in half, and probably will die. i would be royally P.O.'d.

    Re: Stolen Boulder !!!!!!
The Utility companies got themselves granted access with a signed document before they installed utility poles along backyards or other private property in the past. The developer of the land would grant 24hr access before the first home was built. Nowadays Electric lines are laid underground in the public right of way. Most people don't understand that the legal width of a street is from property line to property line. This area usually encompasses the sidewalks on both sides of the street (or where a sidewalk would be) and everything in between. All this is legally part of the street and is public right of way. Even if you have a nice lawn and flowers and an underground sprinkler system all that can be removed and you have no say because it isn't your property. It has to be this way to allow a place for water mains, gas mains, electric lines, fiber optic lines, cable tv lines, storm drains, sewers or to widen the road as the area becomes more populated etc. Many homeowners become upset when something that they have put in this area is destroyed by workers. I have seen people put elaborate landscaping structures out in front of their home, unknowingly on public property right on top of a gas main. Eventually the gas main develops a leak. Then I would have to remove their stuff and dig up the area to make a repair. They would be irate. I would of course knock on their door and explain what had to be done before hand. If it was a big enough leak it would have to be repaired immediately. Whether they liked it or not or understood it or not the work had to be done.
