    I was just let go!
I was just informed that my position at work was being eliminated and I was being let go effective this morning.
I was there over 4 years. No pension (not vested since it takes 5 years), only 4 weeks severance (one week for each year), one month of medical coverage and I lost my vacation and sick time (they don't pay it out).

Now it looks like I am screwed. The ecnomomy sucks! There are no jobs out there!

I just bought a mojave! Now It looks like she will be listed for sale along with several other animals to raise cash. This just bites!

I am so upset right now. I can't believe this happened. No warning whatsoever! Just came up to me and said "your position is being eliminated, pack up and go home".

This is one of the WORST days ever!

    Stop.
    Breathe.
    Take no action right away.
    Yes, the economy sucks.
    Yes, unemployment is crazy.
But, for today and tomorrow and the next day- breathe.
    And do nothing.
I know it's scary and crappy and undeserving.
But just breathe and do nothing for a few days.
    Really.
    It's messed up out there.
    Just chill for now.
Feel your emotions and then let them go.
    Everything happens for reasons.
    Let the reasons come...

Steve, Ill say only one thing.

Things happen for a reason. It may not be good now, or tomorrow, but at some point you will realize that it happened for the best.

My condolences to you and your family, best of luck!

You are not screwed- that is dysfunctional thinking. You and your family WILL create your path through this unforeseen event.

It's hard especially since my property taxes are not escrowed and I pay them in one shot. I have a big bill due July 1st.
I also don't know if I'll find something reasonably soon.
    This bites.

I'm SOOO sorry! and I feel your pain. I was just let go last month for budget cuts as well, and because of it we have moved, and are attempting to sell the house that we can no-longer afford. Things *will* turn around though, I promise. Being able to move was really one of the best things to come out of me getting laid off. Even if I do miss my job terribly, and haven't found a new one. I'll be thinking of you, and I hope that you find a new place of employment ASAP.

Well, that sucks. But I'm sure you weren't saving it to pay from one paycheck....
Listen- crap happens and this is life. You will make things happen for yourself and your family. In that you must put your faith and your action.
After you do nothing but just breathe and play for the weekend.

Hey Steve... Last year I was cut from a company I was sure I was going to retire with...

Here's the thing, everything will work out. Things might get tight, (or they might not)... but they will be OK. Adjusting to change is one of the best things about being human.

BUG HUGS... You'll probably go through a funk, but stay focused. Make lists of goals, etc...Are you eligible for unemployment in your state until you find a position?

My dad was let go last fall, he was a project manager for a home builder. Housing market is falling apart so they had to fire alot of people. But he ended up starting his own business, and a few months ago ran into a job opening that wasnt even planned, he was hired instantly. He went to school for a job in this field, I love that field, so it all worked out really well. It was the best thing that ever happend to him. You will do the same im sure! Everything happens for a reason!:D

sorry to hear that Steve, but as has been pointed out, let it go for the weekend. clear your mind and your emotions. Monday is a new day, new week and your mind will see clearer. If you can, file for unemployment. call the tax bureau about your property taxes, explain what happend and see if you can make payment arrangements. Most places are willing to work with your situation.. its a win win.. you pay toward it and they get their money. there is always a light at the end of the tunnel.. trust me I've been down that dark road more times than I care to remember. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

    Bummer Dude.

However, this sounds suspicious to me. You just had a run in the HR last month and now, out of the blue, you're terminated?

You may want to talk to a liar, er lawyer, next week and see if something can be done.

Or, to the left, it happens. No point in browbeating yourself over it, it's not going to get undone that way.

    Good luck.

Steve, you do have to go through the process of grieving the loss of your job, but you also have to let the negative energy go - it will eat you up and it will show when you interview. You can't be desperate in interviews, you have to be positive.

I was laid off after 9-11 from Nortel Networks. I was devasted. AND I was out of work for a year. Those times were FAR worse than the job market is today. Trust me - my job that year was a professional job searcher.

I immediately filed for unemployment. Plan to do that on Monday so you can at least have some money coming in, no matter how small it is in comparison to your normal check. They also have resources at your unemployment office to help you find job listings you might not otherwise find on your own.

Network, network, network. Be open to applying your skills to another type of role entirely.

What I learned in my year of unemployment? Never to complain about a job again. And that something better really DOES come along and you'll find yourself in a better place. I was just recognized this morning, in fact with my five year service award.

Good things will come to you. You just have to believe it yourself. Negative energy will only draw negative to you. Positive energy will draw positive to you.

Sorry to hear that. Even if they had to let you go, doesn't seem like they went about it the right way. They just tell you one morning that your job is no longer effective that day!?! Kind of messed up.

I don't really know you but I've enjoyed reading your posts and looking at the pictures you post. Like someone above said, keep your head up. “To persevere, trusting in what hopes he has, is courage in a man.” - Europides.

Don't be Mr. negative about the job market and the economy. It will get you no where.... and frankly, in your postion it just isn't true. the economy does suck. the job market does suck. Guess who is most needed in this kind of enviromnet tho? That's right... a financial analyst!!!!

Now go party! CONGRADULATIONS!!!! You are a FREE MAN!!!! Where you go from here is completely up to YOU!

You know, I heard one time, through a friend of someone I had just met who was talking to the girl next to him about something he had heard or read about but, it seems, from what I gathered overhearing this conversation, that a thousand crickets slipped through a mailslot is quite annoying to those whose slot the crickets were slipped.

Isn't it funny what you can hear when people don't suspect you're listening?

I'm hoping all will work out in the end.
I am mentally drained right now.

I spent the day updating my resume and calling various recuiters and looking on Monster.com to see what was out there and put up my resume.

All I can do now is hope for the best.

hey man, use this experience as motivation.

is there something out there you've always dreamed of doing? NOW IS THE TIME!

Take all of that negative energy and grab life by the balls and go for your dreams.

A similar experience happened to me last year. It was a good thing. I was burnt out so bad at my former job, but due to pay and benefits i would have never left.

my potential was much greater than what my former job had to offer, i just never had the desire to leave due to being so comfy.

But sometimes life makes decisions for you and that is when you gotta take a few jumps...you'll fall, but eventually you'll land.

    Good luck man!

have you thought about doing teaching?
They are in desperate need of subs, and you can work on getting a teaching certificate.
Subs don't need to take all the classes teachers do. i would talk to your local school board OR if they have a union to find out what you could do.
ALSO check out your local community college.
I have a friend who is NOT a teacher, he was in the military in Intel and secret stuff. He teaches a computer course there.
Also if you are a veteran, you can see about certain job benefits and preferences to Vets.
Good luck, I will be looking in less than a month myself.

I wish you the best. Sometimes getting terminated is just the nudge you need though to better yourself. My husband lost his job at Riefler Concrete when they went belly-up. Yesterday, years later, he gets a letter stating that he is not getting the back vacation pay that he was owed, and severence, which was about $6k that he had been waiting for, because the slimeball company went bankrupt.
But when he was fired there, he started his home renovation business. It was a lotmore profitable than that place ever was!
I a actually being shuffled to another department at my job, because our department is being completely eliminated. I know this is not as bad, but it will be all-new people and data to process. I feel joy though in not having been terminated that I know of at least..

Not sure where you live but that doesn't sound right! It's not too late to go back to HR and dispute what they paid you. You may not win but you very well may. You'd be surprised what a company will do just to keep you quiet. I work for a large aerospace company and I'm amazed at what they will do just to keep the labor board and/or lawyers away.

Also, check with your state labor laws and see if "use it or lose it" applies for your sick and vacation. I know in California it does not . . . If you accrued it you get paid for it regardless of the separation terms.

I wish you the best of luck and regardless of how awful you feel right now . . . it will get better.
