I wish people would think first!
Well as you all know Easter has come and gone.Of course as i predicted to Kristy the other day about people having ads up for rabbits needing rehomings.I just left looking at the local craigslist and sure enough several young rabbits needing homes  .This really makes me mad that people run out and gotta have that cute little bunny in the house or Easter has no meaning to it.Now correct me if i am wrong but Easter was made for the pass over of Jesus correct? Sorry if my description of the meaning of Easter is wrong i do believe in god just not a full church goer.Of course the pet stores flood the extra cages with rabbits so they make the extra $$$$ .I just wish people would use thier brains first then possibly buy the rabbit for a life living pet  .Not some impulse purchase :mad:

I've been thinking about getting a rabbit or two. Maybe I'll go check CL. I've been itching for some stew. :D

Re: I wish people would think first!
If you want to be super-technical, Christians took over a pagan holiday. Ostara (or Eostre) (I think I'm spelling her name right) is a Norse fertility/Spring goddess whose symbols were the hare and the egg...it's a Spring thing. ;) However, most modern people don't know anything about her and go with the Christian take-over meaning, even though the original pagan symbols still pervade the holiday. So...bunnies do have to do with the original celebration. But have nothing to do with the Christian celebration, which instead focuses on the death/resurrection of Christ.
When Christians were converting people, we liked to take over their traditional holidays and sort of morph them--it made conversion easier.

Re: I wish people would think first!
Easter had nothing to do with Jesus in anyway until Christians said it did. Same for Christmas. Both were large holidays for many other religions and cultures. In an attempt to squelch pagan rituals, Christians created their holidays and celebrated them "coincidentally" at the same time as the pagan holidays.
In coming with the mixing of both pagan and christian holiday's things got mixed together and the sign of renew and fertility got placed on the rabbit. Same for Christmas with the Christmas tree, that came to be because of a mix of Egyptian culture blending with Christian.

What irritates me about this, is how many Christians look down on Pagans as being "Devil Worshipers" and evil-doers, yet when you tell them that many of their "Christian" holidays originated as Pagan, they completely deny it.

Ding Ding Ding! There were about 12--15 different pagan religions all with the same characteristics as Christianity. Christianity merely copied other religions with the holidays.
Youtube the word Zietgiest.

Re: I wish people would think first!
If you want to be really technical easter was a pagan holiday....
However to hop back on topic I agree that rabbits and chicks are the WORST things to get people for easter. I remember when I managed the pet store we had so very many people coming in practically begging us to take in their easter bunny mistakes. It's sad that's for sure.
HAHA! Looks like many already beat me to it.

Re: I wish people would think first!
But Joe, bunnies don't lay eggs, chocolate or otherwise. See my granny told me years ago that Mr. Daddy Bunny meets Mrs. Mommy Bunny and they go into the cabbage patch and.....well she never got around to telling me the rest of it. Hmmm, this may explain why I have four kids. :weirdface
Anyways, there was no darn egg laying going on! I'm pretty sure of that! :P

LOL, that made me laugh to be honest, I was never taught that any of our holidays were purely with out pagan influence. Must just be us rebel Lutherans that teach that huh?

I watched the video. It's very interesting how so many religions/belifs have so much in common, yet so many people willingly remain ignorant about it.

I didn't have a chimney growing up either, so my parents told me he used the front door. LOL
Also, one time I caught my dad putting presents under the tree wearing a santa suit, and I ran up to him and started talking to him. Then I noticed he had the same glasses as my dad, and he told me that they shop at the same place. Then I asked why he had the same ring as my dad (it was a class ring), and he told me they went to the same school. She I told all of my friends that my dad went to school with santa.

Re: I wish people would think first!
At the pet store I worked out we refused to sell rabbits for the week before easter and about 2 days after. We had one gem of a spoiled teenage girl come in with her friends wanting to buy a rabbit the day before Easter one year. I told her we didn't sell rabbits around easter. She was all, "Why not?" and I told her that a lot of people buy rabbits just for easter and then dump them off afterwards, and that if she really wanted a rabbit she could come back after easter and get one. To which she said, "What would be the point? I just want it for Easter!" Whereupon all her friends laughed and they left. I wanted to punch her in the face. I'm getting mad just thinking about it. URRRGH.

Re: I wish people would think first!
I've heard it, and seen it, plenty of times. People only want those cute little bunnies, duckies and chickies for a few days, then they dump them with rescues and even just dump them outside. It's the most horrid thing... I wish they would find some NON LIVING icons for their holidays!! At Christmas it's the poor pines... just cut down by the thousands and then dumped out on the curb afterward... so sad.
And BTW, yes you spelled Ostara correctly. :D It's my second favorite natural holiday... first being Samhain(Halloween to non-pagans).
I, too, find it frustrating that they totally deny having taken all their holidays from pagan celebrations... oh well, they deny almost everything you try to tell them anyway.
Blessed Be! And hoping you all had a Merry Ostara!

Re: I wish people would think first!
how bout christmas being taken from saturnalia
or santa claus being a mix of the grandmother cult, Odin, and Nicholas from Turkey and he's only red because coca cola said so.

Re: I wish people would think first!
My mother used to tell me rabbits lay eggs when I was little. I was so excited, I wanted to see... so she took me to the rabbit hutch and showed me the droppings beneath.. Eww :)

Re: I wish people would think first!
My friend says easter is the only time of the year where people are willing to give him free burm food:D He tells them that he will give them a good home if they cant find one for them:rolleyes:

Re: I wish people would think first!
It IS stupid :( People don't think of the care and cleanup that these little bunnies need. They just want a cute photo-op for their kids. Isn't that why someone dresses up as the Easter Bunny and sits at the mall for photos? Sad. It makes me grit my teeth to think of people being so callus. Granted, I do not really like rabbits much. Living on a farm and having to shuffle through piles on piles of their poop pellets in the hay barn.. you get to dislike them fast in my poop-compressed shoes.
Yes, Easter had Pagan roots. There are enough listings on Google that go into that, without me re-inventing the wheel. :) I could go into the whole thing whereby the Pagan's male aspect of the Horned God was turned from his original purpose as a virile male life force, to a horned evil demon, but I am sure that no one wants religious debate in the Bunny Thread! ;)

Hey, merry Ostara to you, too! I happen to be one of "them", I just consider myself a well-informed Christian who likes to do her homework ;) I have enough pagan friends to know some of the rudiments of different things, I loved Neil Gaiman's American Gods and I dig mythology :D
But as per the point of the thread, I think we've all expressed our disgust with irresponsible parents buying cute things without any intention of caring for them after the holiday. A smarter thing to do would be to have some chicken and lapin for a meal with some hard-boiled eggs ;) My mom and her family traditionally have lamb--it's symbolic and tasty ;)

Re: I wish people would think first!
Ah! An enlightened one! Major Kudos to you, Azure, there aren't enough well-informed Christians out there...
I, myself, make it a strong point to study at least the essentials of all religions for better understanding. :)
Back to the bunnies: I think someone should invent a business called 'Rent-A-Bunny' that rents/lends out bunnies, ducks, and other such holiday critters to those insensitive idiots who only want one for a day or two. That way, the manager would make big bucks and the animals would be spared! :D
If I had the room right now... I would love to have another dwarf rabbit. The three rabbits I once had were all rescues from the Spring tragedies...

Re: I wish people would think first!
UGH there is a person posting on craigslist here in MD saying that she has a few rabbits that she got for Easter but her son is deathy scared of them and that she needs to get rid of asap or she's just going to dump them in the woods. BUT she is asking a $100 "adoption" fee for each one. WTF?!
A lady I work with is trying to get her to give them up for nothing before she just lets them go to get killed or die a long death out of the woods.
I hate people at times!

A $100 each what is she smoking .

Re: I wish people would think first!
She probably got then free or next to nothing from a farmers market around here and thought she could make a few hundred off. So she posted threating there lives to make people feel sorry for them. It's not working, it's got everyone very mad and trying to get these rabbits away from her. People never stop amazing me with what they will do to make a quick dollar. >.<

There actually are many breeders that do this very thing.
Just think of how many people could be fed by all of these dumped rabbits too, instead of putting them in rescues who are already full... :hungry:
