Do you feed at night or in the daytime
I want to know if you guys feed at night or in the day. Also if you could elaborate and tell us around which time of day or night and if you think it matters in your ball pythons feeding response. Thanks guys.

I wouldn't call them terrariums, but they're not racks.
I used to feed in the morning but after a problem feeding I am now switched to night-time. Apparently my BP wants privacy this winter.

I feed on Wednesdays between 8 and 9 pm. That time works because my wife doesn't like to be present for feeding time, so I feed when she's putting the kids to bed.

I have fed this snake early in the day, though, and his response was just as strong then as it is at night.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong:
Because they're nocturnal BP's wonder out of their burrows after dark to eat, drink, check their E-mail, play the lotto...:weirdface Whut?

Really... I feed at night because that's when they are "naturally" active.

Agreed but if you pre-scent wouldn't that wake them up anyways. I don't think that in the wild they only eat when a rat or mouse crosses by them at night. Plus if you keep them in a rack they aren't getting much light in from outside so I don't know how that would make much of a difference.

Pre-scenting is very effective... I've fed in the day time with no problems, I'm not implying that one works better than the other, I just choose to feed at night.
As for the light, to the best of my knowledge they spend the daylight hours in borrows, etc... coming out after dark to feed. I believe they "know" when it's dark... like they "know" the seasons are changing...
Maybe someone else will chime with more info?

I feed most of my collection on Tuesdays around 6-7p.m. Everyone eats at that time, but since I have two on every 5 day schedules, they don't all eat on the same evening. :)

i feed at night but only because i go into work at 4am and get home at 4pm.... so after shower and dinner for me then its dinner time for mitch, around 7ish. but i have fed in the day time and even morning and had just as strong a feeding responce as at night. and yes pre scenting is crucial imo.

My snakes will eat anytime but at night they are waiting for food and take them right off the hemostats. In the daytime it is best to prescent the room. If I just set a f/t rat on a hide and leave it, sometimes they get cold before the snake wakes up and smells it.

since I've started working third shift we have shifted to feeding durring the day. This hasn't seemed to change the feeding response in any of our snakes so far most are eating ohter then those who are not breeding presently.

Re: Do you feed at night or in the daytime
I pretty much feed when ever I find time. My feeding days are on Tuesdays and feeding a few dozen snakes with feeders ranging from rat pup to several pounds, it takes some time to thaw them out and get them all ready.

I have one snake that I think likes to eat at night the most. But, she still eats when ever she is given food. Even more so right now thats she has came off of a long fast.

I have heard of peoples snakes only eating at night.

with 43 snakes no wonder why my room is always messy,no food in the fridge, im broke all the time, and the truck is always out of gas.heh actually i think they leave rodent burrows at night to move to another burrow to wait for the next meal.

    good point here!

i feed both some snakes wont eat durring the day, while some eat all the time, and some just plain try to eat you! as for how many days i wouldnt feed more than every 3 days. that gives time for digestion and prevents regergutation due to food going bad in stomach before it can be digested all the way.

i have some that will only eat once a week and some that just seem to want to eat all day long(which i dont allow) if it means anything my het Lavander albino female hatched 7-21-07(50 grams then) is 550 grams now and she trys to eat me at times

I feed my guys when I have time. Most of the time that is in the evening after work. when I feed on the weekends, it is usually in the middle of the day. I've found no trouble with feeding my guys at any time. They know when I bring the bowl of thawed rodents into the room and by the time I get to the adults (I feed the youngsters first and then the adults) they are waiting at the front of their tubs for a nice juicy rat.

Awesome, that's the kind of info I want. Not that I want you to say it doesn't matter but I want somebody who has experienced both to shed some light on the subject.

Do you wait a week before trying new feeding strategies. Also you should try feeding pre-killed that are a little smaller than you would usually feed it. Also check the temps and humidity. Make sure the hide is an appropriate size. How big is your snake. Has it ate for you before? Did you handle it a lot before it went off of feed?

Re: Do you feed at night or in the daytime
I've been feeding Monty in the evening, usually before 9:00pm every Saturday. I feed him 2 f/t adult mice or one small rat (he's at 540 grams as of an hour ago), which seems to be the magic amount for him.

Up until 2 weeks ago I would get his food from a local pet superstore, and noticed that their f/t would really smell up the room when they thawed. Then 2 weeks ago I bought a bulk-pack of 50 adult mice from the local reptile swap (fun to keep in the freezer next to the kid's popsicles ;) ). I was going to buy small rats, but they had run out before I got there. But now I've noticed that these new f/t mice haven't much odor, especially compared to the superstore bought mice.

So I've had to do more work to get Monty to strike these mice. But the 2 things that seem to help are 1) keeping the lights lower in the room to make him rely on his sense of smell over eyesight, and 2) make sure the mouse is warmer than room temp so that his heat pits see the mouse. Since doing these two changes Monty noticeably strikes hard at the mouse by instinct alone!

I hope this helps others! :)

Re: Do you feed at night or in the daytime
Depends on the snake or rather species. I feed the boa and ball in the evening, looking for them to awake and "ready" (noses out of hides with their game faces on).

I don't think the corn would care if I woke him up to eat, he's just so excited about the miracle of mouses from the sky. =D

The burm is happy to eat anytime on any day that ends in "Y". He also is only one of the four who literally begs for food. Imagine this face, minus the tears, on a snake head.

    :tears:
    "...mommy...so...hungry...near...death....withering...away..."

We call him "puppy" when he looks like this, hehe!

i have a wierd feeding routine for my bp...but i feed it durin the day, strictly only every 7 days...on wed...at around 4 or 5 p.m...but my bp is picky the way he/she eats....its a baby, about 3-4 months old...and the only way he will eat so far is from my hands outside of his enclosure.

I can feed lesser when ever, he doesn't really care but as long as he smells food he gos into hunt mode. The rescues have ate yet but seem more active at night and in the morning so i try to feed then. I normally try to wait until i see them up and moving around, because I that that is the best time to try instead when they are seeking protection in their hide.
