Bugs Please Help!
Ok, I took Vinny out today because my girlfriend said she saw something in his water dish today. I only found one, but there was a bug crawling on him!!!! AHHH!!! The vet said he didn't have anything, but I saw this today. This was real hard to get a picture of, so i'm going to upload the big picture. Does anyone have an idea of what this could be? I killed it, but I saved it.
Please help! I'll take him to the vet tomorrow if I need to, I may take it up to the emergency vet to see what kind of bug it is.
Again, I only found 1 of them, and it was on him!!
I'msure you can see it, but it's on his lighter color scale that you can see.

Ok, after reading, it's does look like it's a mite, but i've only seen 1 so far, and it wasn't on his face.
POM is only available online and it doesn't look like they overnight.. how long till i need to be worried if it doesn't come in quickly?
Edit: I seem to have the only picture ever taken of a mite? on a snake.
Can no one confirm this for me?

Re: Bugs Please Help!
It looks like a tick to me, not a mite. A mite is almost microscopic, not nearly the size of 1/2 a scale.
Provent-A-Mite treats both:

Sure looks like a tick to me as well.
Was it an import?

Re: Bugs Please Help!
I found something very similar in size and color on my bp about a month ago so i cleaned his enclosure properly and changed his substrate. I have ordered a can of PAM just incase for the furture, but I have not seen another bug like the one I found a month ago since. It was quite large, 6 legged, black. If it was a tick will PAM kill any remaining and it is likely I may find more?

I was about to ask the same question. My snake has been chilling in his water bowl the past two mornings when I wake up. I thought they did this for mites...
They do that for ticks as well? It's not my humidity it's at 60-70%. I found another while I was holding him to soak him, but nothing came out in the water bowl. I wish I had a bigger picture of it, but that's all I have.
Are ticks as hard to kill as mites? I know big ticks, on people, are very hard to get off, short of a match and some nail polish.
You have to remember though, my snake is 22" long and only 130g. So that bug is pretty tiny.

Re: Bugs Please Help!
Think about it - it's uncomfortable/itchy with ticks on you - you feel them crawling on you. You have no arms and legs - so you do the only thing you can - soak in hopes of drowning them.
Provent-A-Mite when used as labeled will get rid of mites and ticks. To be safe, I'd retreat in 30 days.

Re: Bugs Please Help!
it's a tick. Remove the one's you see, then just like everyone else said, treat the enclosure. Provent a Mite is great for spraying the enclosure. Follow the directions though.

Ok.. I understand it's very important to get rid of them. But he's gonna be alright while I wait for snail mail to get it to me right? I've actually cleaned and disinfected his enclosure, and i'm putting in newspaper instead of aspen until I can get the POM.

Re: Bugs Please Help!
He'll be fine - I ordered mine recently and had it in 2 business days (I ordered early in the am and it shipped the same day from Pro-products).

Re: Bugs Please Help!
So I just ordered my can of POM.
When I get it, do I just spray down the enclosure, let it dry and put him back in there? Is it recommended I reptile relief him before I put him back in the tank.

Re: Bugs Please Help!
I wouldnt worry too much if its just a single tick. DO as the others said and remove and clean your enclosure very well.

Re: Bugs Please Help!
I thought I responded to this thread..
It's an engorged mite, not a tick.. Unless you're picking up seed-ticks somewhere and transferring them to your snake, which should be impossible this time of year, then it's a mite.

Re: Bugs Please Help!
There is instrustions on the can, follow them carefully and you will be fine. Provent-A-Mite (PAM) is very effective.

Yeah, it's def. a Mite, I've founud many more.
Although since I reptile Reliefed him and bleached out his tank twice, i haven't seen one again. Gonna use the PAM though for preventative measures.
And ticks in Texas are possible at all times, but still improbable.

This is old, but update. NO MORE MITES!
I would recommend PAM to anyone. :gj:

Re: Bugs Please Help!
I'm going through the same situation, waiting on PAM to come. Just ordered it. As far as your comment for the snake itself this is what I found online. :weirdface
Snakes should be soaked in a dilute Betadine bath as described above for lizards. If the snake persists in climbing out of the tub or is too small to put in a bathtub, place it in a plastic, lidded container into which air holes have been punched, filling it 3/4 full of the Betadine/water solution. You may wish to bathe the snake in a plain water bath first to allow it to drink first, adding the Betadine after it has done so. If the snake defecates in the water, drain the tub, clean it, and draw a fresh Betadine bath.
Whether or not the snake's head was under the water, dab the eyes and heat pits with mineral oil after removing it from the bath. Check the groove under the chin as well as under all the belly scutes and in the vent folds to make sure there are no mites, dead or alive, lodged in those areas. If you find mites in these areas, you can remove them by gently rubbing them from between the scales and folds with a cotton-tipped swab dipped in mineral oil.
Heres the solution they are describing for the lizards.
Place the lizard in a warm (80-85º F / 26-29º C), shoulder-deep bath of diluted Betadine (povidone-iodine): add enough Betadine to water to make it the color of medium tea. Pour the bath water over the lizard, being careful around the eyes. The water will flush most of the mites off and drown them while the Betadine, a topical antiseptic, helps treat all the mites' bites. You may wish to bathe the lizard in a plain water bath first to allow it to drink first, adding the Betadine after it has done so. If the lizard defecates in the water, drain the tub, clean it, and draw a fresh Betadine bath.
Let me know your results. I'll let you know mine once I get the PAM. I feel this is going to be a pain to get rid of. :tears::sabduel:
