    Teen speak
I'm only 26 and some of the words today totally throw me. Sick for instance as I've seen it in use on a few threads here. When did sick = cool? I'm just as lost as when phat = cool... The life of a country girl, so out of the loop.

I am 17 and yes I do hear a lot of people use words like such, but I never have. They sound wrong to me. (Not saying they ARE wrong)

I do say "sweet" but that word makes sense to me.

Other "new" (They may not be new but I have been hearing them a lot lately)words I hear are : Hardcore, uber, crack, dunzo (Those are the only ones I can think of as of right now but I know I missed many)

Of course, look at how people used to talk in the 1600's. If you read anything from that period, you have to reread it a few times to even get a grasp of what they are talking about. Shakespeare for example.

There are a lot of Ebonics down here. The ones you listed aren't even used anymore :P. A lot of the words are just super shortened forms, kinda of a verbal short hand.

Cuh = Cuz = Cousin which is kind of used like the word Bro. Endearing term.

    Tight = cool

There are millions more that make no sense.

The best was when Dave Chapelle did that interview with an old white guy and just started making up words and phrases that sounded like it could be slang, but had absolutely no meaning.

    Some of my favorites:

    I finna/I finsta = I am going to; I am about to
get yo (noun) on - example: get yo grind on
long O = 'or - open tha do; got down on tha flo

I finsta get my grind on. Bia, you finna get low to tha flo?
I am about to go dance. Would you care to join me, miss?

    Re: Teen speak
Yea, and it's also weird cause the word can have a different meaning in different places.
Like you picked the word "tight" which equals "cool".
But I've used it and I've heard it being used with (example) "My parents are so tight lately" or "It's tight that I have to go to the museum"

So I guess in the first example tight would = not very nice, or not giving and the second example tight would = sucks.

These days it can be hard to keep up with the lingo that is consuming our children. A little read over www.urbandictionary.com may help you out.

I have worked in education for a long time and hear some very "interesting" words and contexts. However not all social groups use the same words or have the same meanings.

Slang is slang. Even our use of "cool" is pretty weird if you think about it. An adjective that means something's not hot nor freezing.. meaning that you like something?? :)
People imitate what they hear in rap "music" a lot..

Yeah.... I'm lost. I tend to use words such as Spiffy, Nifty, or my own accidently made up mistake TWIBBITS....don't ask what I was trying to say, I really don't remember. But the point is, they don't have alternate meanings.

However I have said 'Wicked' 'Sweet' and splendiforous..... o.O

I don't know.. Morrissey was around in the 80's! But he would run circles around these screamy 12-year-olds with dyed hair and striped sleeves..

I go to Full Sail down in orlando FL for the Game Development program. So I go to school with nothing but gamers. I played WoW for about 2 years. We, as in gamers, have our own language. and no, I'm not referring to 1337 sp34k.

I can't stand ghetto talk, :cens0r::cens0r::cens0r::cens0r: drives me freakin' nuts...aka every rap song out there these days. Rap had actual meaning back in the day, look at 2pac, now, they talk about their white t-shirts and how they have more gold in their mouth then Fort Knox...:rolleyes:
