My New Children's Python
Just pulled the trigger on this baby.
https://ball-pythons.net/gallery/fil...n_picture.jpeg
He's a sub-adult. Currently weighs in at 81 grams. I should get him in 4 to 6 weeks. So, so, so excited.

Such a beautiful little python! I'm so excited FOR you. :carrot: What a great choice! :D
I'm sorta wondering what's with their gloves though? Is he a nippy one?

Those gloves look to be too thin for protection, but the seller did say he was prone to confusing fingers for food.

Maintaining cleanliness and bio security between each animal and enclosure

A little dual-duty for the gloves*...;) & kudos to the seller for giving you straight information on him.
*Yes, while his teeth can penetrate those gloves, they're also not so appetizing as actual warm fingers are- gloves can act as a repellent for many snakes too.

Re: My New Children's Python
When I decided on the Children's Python, I did so with the understanding that I would have to be a lot more careful than I was with my ball python.

I've only known the one I have, & she's not a biter at all, but I know that some of them are, just from reading other's accounts. I'm glad you're forewarned- I wouldn't blame you for using similar gloves for a while either, just to reinforce the idea that your hands are "unappealing". Anyway, most snakes learn with more handling- & most breeders have limited time to spend handling their snakes prior to selling, so hopefully yours won't be a slow-learner, once he gets more regular attention from you.

I got him from a breeder, but he is a hognose breeder. This was his pet. It's o.k. I fully expect to have to put in some work. I'm looking forward to it. He's the only snake I have, so I've got the time.

Attractive little rodent killer, congrats! Looks like he’s been well fed. ;)

Looks like we both have variations- mine's a granite phase (spotted python, that is- "close cousin"), but I like your hypo- sorta peachy color.

A lot of people don't like the faded pattern of the Children's. They prefer a high contrast. Not me. I like the Children's more subtle pattern. I also love the reddish color. To be honest, though, I don't know it's genetics.

I've seen some with a bolder pattern & I like that also, but to be honest, I think they're all attractive in their own way. I'm way more into their personality, & it helps to remember that it's their natural patterns that help them stay hidden & survive in the wild. I just stumbled on this article, you might find it useful (it lists & shows the known variations for Children's pythons).

Thanks for the article. I agree he looks hypo, more red than brown, but looks weren't my primary reason for going with a Children's. First I decided to go with an Antaresia. I hear they are feisty. I admire that. I'm intrigued by how aware they are reported to be, how they notice and respond to their environment. I expect they are a joy to watch. I also like that they are semi-arboreal. I look forward to watching him explore the different levels of his surroundings. They are also hardy and easy to care for. Ready feeders and tolerant of wide range of temperatures and humidity. Of the Antaresia, I did like the look of the Children's the best. The Pygmy/Anthill was too expensive anyway and the Spotted was too big. So, looks played a small role, but the Children's other traits were more important to my decision.

What a little beauty! I am of course thrilled for you because I love Children's Pythons (and all of the Antaresia) so much. Since he sounds like an enthusiastic eater, I am going to be nagging you to target train the little guy so that he becomes crystal clear on the difference between fingers and food.

I'm willing to bet it won't take too much convincing? It sounds as if the snake himself will be rather persuasive...

Please nag away. I'd love to learn more about target training. It looks like I'll need it.

Beautiful pick! Welcome to the Antaresia crew!

Re: My New Children's Python
In my excitement, I neglected to ask the seller some important questions that I probably should have asked before I put down my non-refundable deposit. The seller included some information in his ad (here). What else do I need to know? I came up with the following: hatch date, enclosure description, and heath issues (past and present). I also intend to ask him about the snake's most recent shed and meal, but since the snake won't be delivered until March, I'll hold off on those questions. Thanks.

They list him as "normal" but to me he looks "hypo"? They might not know his exact DOH if their source never specified & if they didn't bother to ask. Wise to hold off on shipping AT LEAST until March, since they're up in the "frozen Northeast"- shipping in winter adds risk.

I bought him as a pet, not to breed, so it's enough for me that he's pretty. If the seller doesn't know the hatch date, the breeder might. The seller names the breeder in the ad and the date he bought it. That may be enough to get the date from the breeder. I'm in the frozen Northeast too, so delivery will be weather dependent. The seller's only 3 1/2 hours from me, so I might even go pick it up myself.

If you can pick him up that would probably be better, I would love if some of the sellers local to me had stuff I wanted, although it's better on my wallet that they don't

Before I forget I wanted to mention one enclosure furnishing that my Antaresia seem to love - the elevated ledges and hides by Magnaturals. They use really strong magnets and even my adult Jungle Carpet has not displaced his Magnaturals shelf (though he is admittedly a smaller male). The Children's really love these elevated hides. My only caveat is that I am not sure whether the magnets would work through PVC: I place mine against the thinner plexiglas windows in my enclosures.

They are even less likely to work through the 1/2 plywood sides of my enclosure. They look cool though. Keep the suggestions coming.

I don't have a car, but I found a rental for $50, the same cost as the shipping.

You could modify the installation-;) Wood is very easy to attach things to. (Just make sure it can be dis-engaged for cleaning.)
