Snake lunges at glass and his nose is bruised
Hey everyone, I just noticed this and I am a little stressed right now. My 3 year old BP has been randomly hissing in his tank for no reason. I didn’t really think much of it until I noticed his nose is bruised and red! I am assuming he is lunging at the glass but I have no idea why. The glass isn’t warm or anything and none of my other guys do this. There shouldn’t be anything outside of the tank that will cause him to do this. Really concerned about him please help if you can!https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...0789bbe6b6.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...fdd06d6e57.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...950daeeb1e.jpg

Yes that’s one in the cold side and I have a much larger one of the other side with a heat pad.

Those logs arent very good hides, because the ends are open and ball pythons like to hide in termite mounds which are dark tight spaces.. maybe he isnt feeling secure in his large hide and a log...

Ok I’ve been wanting to replace that one but haven’t gotten to it. The other one has one small opening and is dark. Could one hide being open like that want him to jump at the glass though?

I know I have a medium cave and small cave and in both caves he likes to have his sides touching the cave, makes him feel more secure

Its hard to say the exact reason, but that is a possibility.. usually that reaction is caused by something in the husbandry he isnt comfortable with

Humidity not right, hides not right, temps not right.. normally its one of those things

Also looks like he is shedding.. make sure your humidity is higher than normal.. like 70% maybe he is trying to rub his shed off and having issues...

If hes lunging at the glass, he may also be being defensive and seeing reflections in the glass

Ok I need to boost humidity I bit which I started doing a few days ago when he started shedding. I also covered the glass with towels so no reflections

It looks to me like he's stressed due to stuck shed. His eye caps look still intact so he's essentially blind. How long has the shed been stuck like that?

About 2 days. I gave him a bath go try to help with the shed and I’m raising the humidity even more now

I’d try the wet , textured towel trick !!

    ( without the soak initially)

Stubborn shed / retained eye caps
For real stubborn shed skin and indeed retained eye caps -the best way I found over the years is a 20 minute soak , then have a wet or very damp rough textured towel ready and gently wrap the snake in the towel .. then whilst it wriggles continually inside the towel you apply very gentle pressure to the stubborn areas on the snake ...
You may get a little wet yourself but this method ( done properly) rarely fails to be honest

Has this behavior been going on since before he started his shed cycle?

Probably just hungry and thought a reflection was a food item. If he’s calm when he’s out I doubt it’s defensiveness. Could put a blanket over glass or move the enclosure to a area with less traffic.

Short answer: Yes...Snakes NEED to have hiding places that feel secure to them. Do you sleep outside on the ground & with no blanket? Same sort of thing...
He really did a number on his nose, too. (sorry for my late response, was off-line for a while) Shed issues might also have contributed to his lashing out.

He hasn’t ate in 4 weeks possibly due to shed and I did put a blanket on the tank I’m hoping that helps

Then I would definitely be inclined to think the attitude has to do with the shed. The animal is essentially blind and uncomfortable.

I would try to improve husbandry to ensure a complete, healthy shed next time.
