Upset snake...
He's mad at me. But it's not my fault I tell him. They tweaked the tax laws! https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...63f5fcbf54.jpg

It's not just you...I've heard it's happening to MANY this year. They're withholding less $ (so it seems like you're making more $), but then at the end of the
year, you owe. That sucks! Especially when you were counting on a refund. So much for "tax cuts", it was just a lot of hooey, empty promises & manipulation.
And how to break the news to the snakes...:(

Re: Upset snake...
I didn't hardly make crap last year I've made less than I've made in many years and yet I owe ?!?! Told him to get over it. Be happy you have a roof and a rat in your belly. LOL

But look at the bright side...there's so many big corporations & very wealthy people that pay NO taxes at all, aren't you happy for them?

Don't have or use a cell phone. Landline phone isn't much help, lol. At least it's not a rotary dial though. ;)

I really don't like or need a cell phone...don't know what I'd do without my trusty ol' desktop though...

Absolutely. The largest and most successful corporations are owned by people like you and me via stock or stock mutual funds (mostly held in retirement accounts). While you don't pay income taxes on earnings on the investments held in retirement accounts, corporations must pay corporate taxes before paying dividends, so the lower tax rates mean more money passes through to investors like myself and anyone else with a 401k, IRA, pension, 529 plan, or vanilla brokerage account. That's good news!
I was working in financial planning and investment management when the new tax bill was signed into law and I read the whole thing and did a lot of math on a very smart computer. Generally speaking, the benefits went overwhelmingly to low to middle income workers like myself. If you live in a very HCOL area, have a high income and have an expensive home, you lost some deductions and very likely your taxes went up. Myself, I live a very average lifestyle, and based on a true calculation of taxes 2017 vs. 2018 my wife and I saved about $2,000. We didn't see this difference at tax time, but rather throughout the year.
People see that they either aren't getting a refund this year, or their refund amount went down, and assume they are somehow paying more in taxes. But back in February 2018 we all got a raise in net pay when the withholding tables changed (if you didn't, you should probably have a serious discussion with your employer about where the extra money from your paycheck went, because it didn't go toward taxes). You have to take that into consideration when determining if you gained or lost from the new tax laws. When you get your taxes done, you should be able to find a line that shows total taxes paid, and if your income did not significantly change from 2017 to 2018 you could take last year's tax return and find the same information. That will give you a real comparison.
Anyway, just figured I would throw a few relevant points out there. I'm glad we can have a discussion on taxes here without it becoming political and pointless! It seems like there's no safe place elsewhere online to discuss this stuff.

taxes have me SO upset this year. we owe for the first time ever and we owe big.

I knew there was something I liked about you!
I will not have a cell phone, and hate that everyone expects me to. Every service wants to send me "text" messages or wants me to download some app. I don't even like phones in general. If you've ever seen "The Wolf of Wall Street", Rob Reiner's character acts exactly the way I do when my home phone rings.
I do have a tablet though, which is great for playing music, saving maps, and as a personal organizer. It has all the advantages of a cell phone without the major disadvantage (that somebody can call you on it).

And the "Do Not Call" registry is practically useless these days, so now they call your cell phones too! Consumer protections are getting flushed:grabbed:
I haven't see "The Wolf of Wall Street" but I can imagine, lol...probably similar to my reaction when telemarketers call me.

My policy is to ignore any calls that aren't saved to my contacts list. I save companies I've ordered from just in case something comes up or when I'm expecting a call, but other than that if it isn't important enough to leave a message for explaining why it is an unknown number, I don't care. And if a telemarketer leaves a message, I block the number.
I have seen a trend lately where telemarketers match your middle 3 digits of your phone number to trick you into thinking it is a number you know and somehow don't have in your contacts. I block these outright.

I'll keep that in mind, if & when I ever "need" a cell phone. (I've used a Trac Fone in the past, when traveling cross country...but after that, meh...)
And yes, I see the same telemarketer tricks on my landline...the scams are getting outrageous but my swearing has improved. :D

My husband is an accountant (he's a controller at a medium-sized local company) and does our taxes on the paper forms (old school lol). We didn't end up owing anything this year and did see a small increase in take home pay.
If you ended up owing, and work for a company that does the withholding for you, you should speak to your HR/controller and see if they can modify your withholding to match what it should be.
Ideally, you don't want to owe, but you also don't' want to get a refund back either.. big refunds mean that the government just got an interest-free loan of your money for several months. :P
