What's your occupation/job?
Might as well share where you sometimes go off to when you're away from your reptile friend XD Knowing a lot of you users range from being in your 20s-30s, I'm kind of curious to know what you guys actually work as.
Also, do you love or hate your job? Why?
-
Re: What's your occupation/job?
At 41 I am a little outside the range given. My primary job is in public safety. 22 years in 12 as a captain. My side business is designing cooling systems for diesel trucks. Love both jobs.

Wow, that sounds incredible! Believe it or not, your jobs actually sound quite interesting and worth working for:rolleyes: I bet you're living a good life right now, especially when you're working two jobs that you love:D I hope you remain happy with them both!

I'm pretty new here but figured I would share a bit about myself...
I'm 28 and work with my brother and dad (small family business). We install/repair septic systems and work on water wells. Because of the type of work I spend a lot of time outside and on tractors (excavators and tracked loaders) which lets me find lots of snakes/insects and other interesting things. It's not for everyone but I enjoy my job.

Dude, on tractors? That actually sounds kind of fun XD It must be nice working with your family too, no?

It can be fun but it depends on what has to be done, it can just be hard work sometimes. Working with family is nice... but you know how family can be.

I worked for my dad when I was a kid. He had me do all the stuff he did not feel right asking his employees to do.

30 years as an IT professional with most of it in application development (I hate the network/admin/security side of things).
My husband and I also have a small business where he works from home as a gunsmith and I deal with the paperwork, invoicing, bookkeeping, taxes, etc.

What's your occupation/job?
Aged 60 !!
Just started my 25th year working with autistic and Asperger teenagers .. helping them get through the trauma of high school life ...
I sometimes feel a bit of a cheat as I'm Aspergers myself and in a way it makes the job so much easier ... although on the other hand being an 'aspie' also makes some aspects of my role so much harder of course ....

Re: What's your occupation/job?
I’m also over the assumed age range at 47. ;) I work for an insurance broker, my department specializes in high risk homes - coastal properties, older homes, rental properties, etc. Basically I stare at a computer screen and talk on the phone for 8-10 hours per day. :weirdface

That is very cool! My other half’s daughter is autistic, significantly enough that she will never lead a normal life and will always need care. There are far more programs and support groups now than there used to be when she was diagnosed. So often those kids need an extra hand in navigating ‘normal’ society, and it’s great to hear that is being provided these days.

53, was a Mold Maker, CNC programmer. Did that for twenty years, then worked as truck driver for DHL for around 3 1/2 years (a division of that moved very, very big things on planes). Got hurt long story, short answer bad enough to be considered severely disabled. Now I just fight to stay healthy.

I'm 34. For over 8 years, I am a paralegal registered with the state. The field I am currently in is auto insurance defense but I started out on the Plaintiff side of things. Some of my former coworkers refer me as to having join the 'dark side' lol but both sides have its pros and cons.
I don't love it. It is rare to find anyone, including lawyers (outside of their own egos), to love this work after doing it for so long. Like most jobs, it is almost like a game of ping pong where both players on each side is required to continue this game for both sakes. I would say I'm good at it, it pays the bills plus more, and I like it when my own knowledge and experience can help others.
For anyone who is interested or curious about becoming a lawyer, best to get your feet wet as an assistant before incurring thousands of dollars in law school, enter into an already lawyer saturated market, and end up hating what you become.

Re: What's your occupation/job?
I’m Exhibitions Coordinator and a Foundations Course Instructor in the Art Department at Mississippi State University. Basically I teach one drawing/design class per semester and install 10-12 art exhibitions a year. I ensure the safe handling, packing, shipping, display, and lighting of the work in two galleries on campus and then patch and paint the walls between shows, build displays, coordinate a statewide juried student art competition and coordinate a summer camp for at risk youth in June. It’s enjoyable for the most part and allows me a decent amount of time to work on my own art in my studio.

That's amazing! I'm an artist myself, and knowing some workers in the art department, it must be cool working with that kind of stuff, huh?:D

49 here, spent my entire life manufacturing after getting out of 4 years in Marine Corps. Built cabinets and moved on to high dollar windows, doors and hatches for yachts. High dollar as in $10,000 for a interior door. Was a CNC machinist at that job for 15 years. Moved on to a large airplane manufacturer and was hurt doing someones job they refused to do and ultimately am facing something new. Was told everything I have ever done is only going to aggravate my injury and make my quality of life worse than it is now.
So what do I do now, I’m not sure yet. Hope to go back to school but not sure how this injury deal will play out. Miss the going to work every day routine and OT, was a workaholic.

I just turned 30, and I'm a librarian.
It sounds quiet, and relaxing, but it's actually the exact opposite. They don't tell you in school that you are essentially functioning as a social worker on a daily basis, despite our education being in research. Many patrons, for a variety of reasons, come to us as a last resort, so we get a lot of questions that you might not expect, ranging from simply finding a book, checking on the stock market, or learning how to use a computer, to locating resources that will help them find affordable housing for low income seniors, or how to apply for SNAP benefits.
I do enjoy the true reference aspect, and I like the collection and acquisitions process, but the patron interactions can become emotionally and mentally draining. A lot of people are kind and grateful for our help, but some others often forget that the person sitting at the desk across from them is a human being, and not just a government robot programmed to take unlimited amounts of venting and verbal abuse.

Dang, sounds like it can be rough at times. It seems like it can be tolerable for the most part, but it's just those flaws that can really make an impact, huh?

Re: What's your occupation/job?
Portfolio Manager by day (finance) and herpetologist at night (just kidding - that's just a hobby - I pay to be a herpetologist, not the other way around).
Also, I am not saying I am Batman, but no one has ever seen me and Batman at the same place and at the same time.

Lol, my bad XD
But I work at an animal shelter. I clean kennels and move cats around. I also socialize shy/nervous cats. We also do little side jobs like doing the laundry and making sure the dishes get cleaned. Sometimes I work in the dog section, but I'm mostly in cats;)
Its a lot of fun! It can be overwhelming, but it really is a joy to know that even a fresh bowl of food can make a cat happy

It's always so interesting to compare our expectations of a job to what someone actually sees who is in that position. I think this is what makes it so hard to choose a
career when we're young & in high school or college-age: you really need to walk a mile in someone else's shoes before following their career path. Nothing like actual
experience.

Yup, humane society is what it is:D Kittens are fun to transfer around the shelter. But gosh, you think you know them when you actually have to scrape their poop off litter boxes and kennel walls. Their kennels take longer to clean because of their messes. And it's beyond CHAOTIC when kitten season comes around.

43 and over 20 years in automotive. Mechanic/ grease monkey and 2 weeks into starting a new shop with a friend.

35, work at Staples as an Operations Supervisor for 10 years. Though I am hoping to make a jump into the government as an administrative assistant. Hit that invisible glass ceiling of middle management.

Lol, I love it!! XD Sounds like fun!
25 or so years ...after nearly 20 years in finance I decided that I needed a complete change and being an animal lover I jumped at the chance of working at an animal sanctuary... I ended up being responsible for a section of dogs ( sixty ) but if we were short staffed we all had to do extra duties like helping with the cats or horses etc..
I started in winter and my first day or two I spent moving snow from the cages and cage doors . We had about 2 foot of snow overnight and with the sanctuary being on the hillside there were 8' snow drifts and some of the cages fronts were completely snowed under .!!!
Anyways it worked it worked out well as I was quickly able to prove that I was a real hard worker ...
I managed about 10 months as it wasn't quite as 'enjoyable' as I had hoped ...

I was working as a car/light truck mechanic for a number of years. Just started as an insurance agent (health/life) a couple months ago. It's been a pretty big change and my body definitely likes it. It's nice being indoors with AC but days sometimes drag on sitting behind a desk. Both have their pros and cons for sure.

That's a big life change, but maybe not as big as the one my regular doctor made...he was previously a police officer. My hat's off to anyone with the courage to change
directions when they feel the need or just the desire (or when their body says so!).

Yep it was a massive decision as we had a very young family and I was the main breadwinner at that time ... my salary dropped by £5,000 a year ... a decent amount around 27 years ago !

Sometimes it's about way more than the money, though obviously that's important too. Very courageous of you!
It's rough when the decision isn't really ours to be made too, like those injured on the jobs they can no longer do...:(
Most of us plan, but life still throws curve-balls. And life is too short to stay stuck in a job you really hate, that's truly toxic.

Re: What's your occupation/job?
35 years old, worked as a 3rd and 2nd officer on board commercial dry bulk ships for 5 years. Loved it but was away for about 8 months out of the year. Made a change 8 years ago and took an office job as a vessel operations manager working with tankers and dry bulk ships. I miss life at sea but on the bright side I get to go home every day to my family , still work with ships and I can fool myself into thinking i'm a herpetologist with a growing collection.

Re: What's your occupation/job?
I'm 55 and on my third career. Spent about 18 years as a journeyman pattern maker of automotive related components. Followed that up with about 6 years as a CMM programmer, writing programs and instructing students. Again it was automotive related with many programs written to check components such as engine blocks, cylinder heads, etc. Now, I'm in my eleventh year as a Realtor specializing in special purpose and not-for-profit properties. Loved my first career, liked my second and tolerate my third. Who knows what's next?

I'm honestly impressed on how much you've done with all of your careers! You've done pretty well in the work portion of your life, props to you:D
Have any ideas or interests in other careers you'd like to do next?

How about you, Traceur? What are your future plans? (or are you still gathering ideas in this thread?)
I sometimes regretted not choosing a career with animals, but then again, no matter what you do for a living, at some point it just gets old, so I figure that it's
actually better that I kept my animals for my own private interest & pleasure, since that way I'm making all the decisions...does that make sense? It's not "work".
-
23 years in auto mechanics. Now a service manager for Goodyear. Next step is to hopefully get my own store to be a general manager at in a year or so.

All I can really say is that this is actually my first job:rolleyes:And I love being there! I can't really say I see myself ever leaving, because I truly do enjoy being around all of the cats and animals. My coworkers are pretty cool too! Not to mention its kind of like my destress-er. There's always something to do and it keeps my mind busy. Sure, some shifts will leave me dying for a huge espresso, but I actually don't mind it. It may sound weird, but I enjoy working harder jobs. I love putting my time into work- I'm a huge workaholic:D
As for plans, I guess I'll just stay where I'm at until anything changes or something. As long as I'm making enough, then I'm good where I stand. I might invest my time into photography though. But I must say, I do love working with animals!

Haha i hear ya on the workaholic. Only person to beat me on hours at work right now is my manager who clocks in about 66 hours a week where as i sit at around 54 hours a week. And thanks. So far it's ok. Just have to manage my mechanics and their workload along with explaining and selling work needed.
