I had an unusual 4th of July morning- I swim 2+ miles of laps in the town pool most days, and today the lifeguards had decorated with flags etc. all around,
they were all wearing patriotic "bling", one gal even wearing a red/white/& blue "tutu"! :D They interrupted the swim for a few minutes to play the national
anthem on the loudspeaker, while one of the guards did a lap down the middle of the pool carrying the flag. :salute:What a cool staff & a great start to our day.

Jees how long does that 2 mile swim take ?? Isn't that about 150 standard lengths of the baths ??

I swim for 2 hours before I run out of time but not out of "steam" https://ci5.googleusercontent.com/pr...es/biggrin.png (-we have 2 hours* of "adult swim" in the morning) My laps take about 90 minutes, depending
on how much I talk & goof off, and how many fast laps I feel like doing. I like to use the last half hour for other exercises (like "rowing" with my water-weights, etc).
BTW, I only swim with fins...you get a much better work-out that way (you're pushing more water). *In later summer we'll get 3 hours adult swim in the morning, &
by then I'll be 'ready' for it.
Our pool is 25 meters (half Olympic size) and a "lap" is across & back (50 meters). Each mile is 32 laps, so keeping track of 64 laps (2 miles) I make use of the "rope"
that divides the lanes; the "rope" is actually a cable strung with plastic disks, so each time I start a new lap, I move one disk over, like a giant abacus... I start
over for each half mile, it works better that way.

"Til August"? C'mon man! BTW, I have a bad knee that's been bothering me a lot this last winter/spring (old injury and prior surgery), & when I saw my doctor
(specialist, orthopedic surgeon) I was afraid he'd tell me to take it easy in the pool this summer...I made sure to tell him what I do & he said "fine, do it!" Swimming
actually strengths all those muscles in/around your knees, & my knee is actually hurting less now...I really want to avoid another surgery on it if I can.
Our town pool is outdoors so I only swim in summer...I really could use this year-round. Exercise in water, even just walking (as some do) is really effective, besides
just being fun- and our lifeguards play a mix of rock music too. :D I'll admit that I work out harder in the pool than most people do, but I've been doing this for about
8 years, & I know exactly how good I feel because of it...like bouncing off the walls!

Yeah, I'm not the best swimmer, but was exaggerating for effect, hahaha.
I have horrible knees too, have had surgery on both, screws in both, next to no cartilage in either. I just got cortisone injections in both a few weeks ago to try to avoid another surgery. One feels great, the other is still killing me. I'm going to need replacements in both sooner than later, but I'd like to at least turn 40 first. I feel your pain! But yeah, water exercise is one of the best things you can do.

Interesting to see what others do for exercise .. I usually go for a 6 mile run ( jog at my age). Which takes anywhere from 52 to 59 minutes ..depending on various factors .. every so often - maybe 3 times a year - when I'm feeling 'real good' and I have time ... I do between 12 and 13 miles and that takes about 2 hours to 2hrs 15 ..
They're not great times but at 60 I'm the oldest jogger around these parts ... [emoji4]
I still record details of the run and time just to compare times as I age .
Oddly enough there's been no decline at all over the last few years .. in fact some improvements... ever since I started 'fasting' 7 days a week ..
I actually feel better than ever .. just wished I'd found out about all the benefits of fasting 40 years ago ..
One rather interesting benefit is dramatically improved health- I've not any kind of illness / infection in the last two years !

I know many cities a s towns, mine included, celebrate Independence Day today with parades, music, bbqs, fireworks and whatnot. If you're celebrating today be safe and have fun! If you're enjoying some adult beverages give up the keys and leave the explosions to the professionals.
Happy Birthday, America!!

My feet & knees aren't into running at this point, swimming is my ticket, but I'm glad that what you're doing works for you...we're all different.
Speaking of different, how does one "fast" for 7 days a week? And not to dispute your health claims but maybe you're just "lucky"? I had a friend many years ago
that liked fasting too, but he died of cancer...discovered when he went for his flight physical & it progressed very rapidly. Many doctors do not think fasting is good
for us and I remain unconvinced, even if it seems to make you "feel" great.

I fast 19 hours each week day and 16 hours Sat and Sundays ..
So I have an evening snack at 9pm then fast until the following day at 5pm ... big meal at 5pm then little snacks all evening - last snack at 9pm . I eat around 2000 calories in each daily 5 hour window.
Weekend I fast from 9pm overnight and start eating again between 12 noon and 1 pm ..

Re: Happy 4th, America
The 'theory' of fasting is that by not eating a minimum of 12 hours - it supposedly gives your body / organs / cells time to repair / renew / regenerate/ rejuvenate.
A good example is all those binge drinkers who go crazy Friday , Sat and even Sunday evenings then drink nothing for 4 or 5 days and the liver just repairs itself in time for the weekend..
If they just kept drinking day after day they'd be dead or at best very poorly ...

I'm glad you clarified what you mean by 'fasting', Zincubus, as the amount of time that people abstain from eating varies widely, some for much longer intervals.
What you're doing makes some sense, though not for me & I've never "dieted" in my life either ("diets" don't seem to work anyway, for those trying to lose wt.).

My understanding was that the liver is the only organ in the body that rejuvenated itself.
I'm finding this interesting, but being that I've worked with food my whole adult life I'm not capable of fasting. I eat when I'm hungry,, hahahaha.

Your cells are being replaced constantly 24/7 .. 365.25 [emoji4]
With the usual way as soon as you break fast in the morning that starts the process off .. eating - digesting .. hunger again .. eating ..digesting .. hunger and so on .. I simply delay the start of the cycle ... then eat a days worth of food in 4 to 5 hours .
As regards the hunger .. after 3 days without a breakfast your brain and body learn not too expect it and you just don't get hunger pangs ...... after a few weeks of no breakfast I cut out dinners the same way .. same result - no hunger pangs ..
The crazy thing is you wake up with loads of energy and the energy levels stay the same ALL day .. without food .. no ups and downs or afternoon lethargy after lunch - just a couple of coffees around noon .. loads of water throughout the day of course .
Best not get too boring .
It's not a new fangled fad ... it's been going successfully for thousands of years ..
Anyone interested Google '16/8 fasting' or the next level '20/4 fasting' ...
Some top elite athletes are getting great improvements through this kind of fasting ... its the future :)

I know it all seems crazily ridiculous but after 2 years of doing it I know it works .. my only regrets is not knowing about it in my 20's ..
I read somewhere that in Britain we only started eating breakfasts in the 1900's .. people just didn't do it ..
It only went crazily popular around 1950's when Kellogg's were struggling badly and they got some high flying advertising guy into save their asse ..
He apparently came up with the famous slogan ...
" breakfast , the most important meal of the day ! "
And so it began :)

Well, eating a day's worth of food in 4-5 hours is still NOT for everyone...myself included, but it's interesting & I'm glad it works for you.
I can well imagine that employers would LOVE to promote this, so they can get away with giving employees fewer breaks...

There are sooo many benefits apart from the ones I mentioned..
You don't spend time buying / planning / preparing/ eating breakfasts ( and dinners in my case ) So much extra time in the day..

Well, my typical breakfast is a handful of walnuts and a few cherries or other fruit, or a greek yogurt, or a hard-boiled egg...not exactly time-consuming, LOL.
I haven't been a fan of "traditional breakfast foods" for many years. The typical carb breakfast (donuts, toast or cereal) leaves you ravenous pretty quickly, and
the version with fried eggs & bacon+++ is enough to weigh you down & into a coma. I'm not above eating non-traditional foods for breakfast when not in a hurry
or swimming: I love a big bowl of cooked spinach, broccoli or kale & sweet corn, plus something for protein. Now & then I even make french toast.
I also enjoy food enough to fuss with enchiladas, turkey/chicken/Cornish game hens, pizza, stuffed peppers, spaghetti, pasta salad, tostadas, burgers & sandwiches.
I "save time" by making deliberate "leftovers", & for anyone trying not to gain weight, it's helpful to eat things you love but with some repetition, so you eat for your
actual hunger instead of the novelty. When you eat out a lot or eat something different every day, most of us tend to eat too much, being a little too "food focused".
I've always focused on eating "mostly" healthy stuff, & there are ways to make what you LIKE so it's good for you too. I do eat deserts, but I don't live on them
either. And all this talk is making me hungry...;) dinner time!

Thanks ..
Oddly enough I don't follow the regime to lose weight .. although it does make weight loss incredibly easy if you want to ..
It simply works for me - I love feeling great all the time - almost immortal - ( I don't get sick these days and the benefits are ridiculous as I've tried to explain ..)
