Have you ever eaten snake?
ok i was just inspired by this thread: https://ball-pythons.net/forums/show...th-your-normal
have u ever eaten snake? it doesn't necessarily have to be a BP; it could be any snake.
what kinda snake did u eat and how was it prepped? did u like it? would u recommend it?
i have not yet tried any snake meat. i've had the chance a few times at the county fair and i have seen it on 1 restaurant menu, but i have always passed. it is still on my "must try" list tho.
-
My dad has had both rattlesnake in the US and boa constrictor when he was overseas, gave the standard 'tasted like chicken' response. /shrug
-
i would absolutely try it! :)
-
Re: Have you ever eaten snake?
I'll eat anything but I don't think I could eat snake. As snake lovers, I'm surprised most of you would be open to trying this. I couldn't imagine eating anything I would consider as a pet (i.e. dog, snake, etc...)
-
Re: Have you ever eaten snake?
Rattlesnake filet when I was living in South Florida many, many years ago. Yep, it did taste a lot like chicken! lol
-
Re: Have you ever eaten snake?
As a survivalist, sure. Why not.
I don't think taste like chicken.
I was in Costa Rica camping and forging when I cam on a Fer De Lance. They are highly poisonous but also delicious. My husky enjoyed some as well.
-
Yeah, once. I have eaten gator multiple times, as well. Fortunately for them, reptiles don't taste very good.
-
I had python and rabbit sausage last fall. It was kinda bland, but still not bad. I'd try it again.
-
Had rattlesnake before, not much flavor to be honest... not bad, but not exactly magnificent table fair.
-
That would be a hard no from me. I'm incredibly weird about the meat I eat. As a rule, I only eat fish and poultry. But not just any fish or poultry. It has to be a very plentiful species (ex: salmon, tuna, redfish, chicken, turkey), but if I determine it to be majestic, unusual, adorable or beautiful (ex: octopus, eel, swordfish, dove, duck, pheasant) I won't eat it.
But I totally wear leather boots, so take my hypocrisy for what it is.

I think its the same way plenty of us can simultaneously have a freezer full of rats and also a few special ones as pets. It just comes downto being able to accept that humans are omnivores at the top of the food chain. I dont like the idea of anything having to be killed but thats just a fact of life and as long as its done humanely then I have no problems. I also have pet chickens for eggs but definitely eat my fair share of nonpet chickens as well.

yay! hypocrisy! i don't eat pork because pigs are pets and highly intelligent and friendly creatures; vastly smarter than dogs. but if there's bacon i'll eat that no questions asked. :confusd:

Re: Have you ever eaten snake?
Never had snake, but I have had gator.

Let's not ignore the other end of that spectrum. Any rodent that bites me or even tries is instant snake food! We are emotional beings.

This. The gator was so heavily spiced though I could barely taste the meat.

The levels of mercury in their system are too high for human consumption.

Florida is definitely the nutball capital of the country. I think it's the weather.

There have been folks theorizing that snake meat may become a "thing" here in the US if we end up with a glut of retics and burms on the market in a few years as a result of the Lacey Act being gutted.
-
I tried rattlesnake once. My dad's friend invited us to a fish fry and he caught a rattlesnake while he was setting up so he fried it up with the catfish. I preferred the catfish to be honest.
-
Re: Have you ever eaten snake?
Had deep fried rattlesnake. It was pretty bland and chewy, not something I would go out of my way to eat again.
now frog legs are a different story...
-
I come from a background where in regards to meat we strictly only eat Herbavores, (Cows, Chicken, Non-Bird of Prey...) and/or any Seafood.
My question to the folks who have eaten Gators and Snake, I'm assuming to be safe you guys can't eat the meat medium or medium rare correct? Due to their diet, it would probably require you to cook the meat well done, is that right?
Just curious.

I dont see how their diet would have anything to do with it? I dont have a degree in biology, but tobthe best if my knowledge, eating meat doesn’t necessarily make a prey animal more dangerous to eat. ANY meat has a risk involved when not fully cooked. Heck, you can even get salmonella from plant food, if it is not sanitary. Sanitation is key.
eating herbivores only as a rule sounds more like a cultural taboo, rather than any scientific rationale behind it.
-
I assume snake meat would be very tasty, if prepared properly, or nasty if prepared poorly, much like any game animal meat.

Oh the diet plays a huge role in terms of meat safety and how to handle/cook it. 100% sanitation is key. There is a reason you can cook a steak from a cow rare and not get sick, while if you ate pork rare you could get extremely sick. Of course, all meats have a risk. Let's say you have a deer that strictly eats grass just like it would in the wild, no added hormones or whatever drugs they use these days, and on the other hand, you have a snake that eats its regular diet of rats (which are carriers of many diseases) which do you think would be safer to eat rare? Definitely a lot of science behind it. Every meat has the right way of handling it and the wrong way.
I was only asking just to see how the folks ate theirs, not to say oh it's not healthy or clean to eat it. Just curious to know more info is all.

Re: Have you ever eaten snake?
A couple of Laotian ladies (refugees from political persecution) cooked up a reticulated python in traditional Laotian dishes once for the local herp club. We all found it quite tasty.
By the way, chickens and ducks are quite happy to eat meat such as insects and earthworms. I've seen chickens go after live mice, and once I rescued a smooth green snake that was being pecked by chickens. A buddy's duck killed and swallowed a sparrow, and one of my father's muscovy ducks routinely chased the cat away from its mouse meal and ate it. Strict vegetarians they are not.
-
My dad tried friend rattlesnake once, and was not terribly impressed. I think he just thought it was bland, but that was over ten years ago, so I don't remember many details.
Wild Calling used to make gator canned cat food, so I brought home a can for my cat once. He was not a fan, but he is kind of on the picky side anyhow (I think he at least nibbled some of it). You can still find some on Amazon for a horrendously frightening price.

Lol didn't want to get into exact details as I didn't want to take away from the topic at hand, but in regards to Birds, its any bird that uses its Talons to kill are not allowed. So yes technically if a pigeon eats a worm, it would still be allowed. Chickens are omnivores without a doubt, they eat worms, bugs... but do not have Talons to kill like an Eagle.
I can go into even more detail but I just was asking about how you guys ate Snakes and Crocs, at what temp or rarity it was done too.
-
Just as I have had pet cow and sheep. Would I eat my pets no. But snake is usually rattle snake and I would try it. I hear it's good.
-
Re: Have you ever eaten snake?
I have not and just could not. But don’t judge any who do!

it's a theory. separately, some folks theorized we would be eating bugs like crickets and mealworms b/c they're high in protein (?) yet easier to raise and produce than cattle.

I don't remember the names of the dishes. But those ladies could cook for me anytime.
Yes, it was a donation. One of the herp club members could not keep the retic and could not find anyone to adopt it.

I think that's a great idea. Also, think about how easy it would be to gut load them with good stuff like omegas and greens, just like we do for animals. I would eat it!

Re: Have you ever eaten snake?
Growing up, our neighbors use to go to the Okeene Rattlesnake Hunt in Oklahoma. One year we had a fish fry and our neighbors brought rattlesnake. I remember it being kind of orange when it was cooked. To me, it had no taste and I had to do more nibbling than eating. Not a lot there to take a big bite. I gave up and asked mom to pass me the plate of Yellow Cat.
-
Re: Have you ever eaten snake?
I would have tried it in the past but never did and I don't think I can handle it at this point. I haven't been comfortable with being a non-vegetarian for a long time though and am dropping some of the smarter species from my diet. I love octopus and squid but have mostly given them up at this point because they're really far too intelligent. Pork is also in question and I certainly skip it out of pure guilt a lot of the time at the grocery. I also try to eat less meat in general because it's more environmentally friendly. I think I could get used to bugs if that became a thing, but some of the leggy ones would be a bit of a rough transition.

I don't eat meat so I guess this doesn't really appeal to me as something I like to grub down on but eggplant parmesan and dark chocolate watch out 😊

Lool that sounds horrible haha I'd rather eat snake.
No offense
-
Re: Have you ever eaten snake?
I've never tried it but I definitely would. I have no problem eating any meat as long as the animal is not endangered.
When I eat meat it has to be thoroughly cooked though. I've never understood the whole dripping with blood rare meat thing [emoji23][emoji23][emoji23][emoji23]

Re: Have you ever eaten snake?
The latest Bear Grills series , Island is rather intriguing given the two teams are one of wealthy ,high achievers up against a team of struggling manual workers and low lifes ...BUT wish theu wouldn't show footage of them slaughtering the native Boas even though they desperately need them as protein.
