Homemade Humid Hide?
Hi! I've noticed Geno going into shed (Pink belly, duller colors) and I made a humid hide. Is this ok? My only concern is the duct tape... It's got reptile carpet lining the bottom with eco-earth/ sphagnum moss inside (Which is damp and humid). Is this alright? I'm hoping to get a better shed than last time, as my humidity was to low. Thank you [emoji4] https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...97dfa885eb.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...d15c501a06.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...46a3b2a08c.jpg

Get that out of your snakes cage right now. You never ever ever put tape inside a ball python cage ever.

it looks fine to me... that duct tape won't stick to him, it is only on the box right?

Personally, I don't bother with humid hides and just keep humidity above 60% all the time.

Re: Homemade Humid Hide?
Yeah, it's just really on the sides to keep it all tight together, and around the opening so he doesn't cut himself on sharp cardboard. That's what I did last time, when I saw him going into shed I bumped the humidity up to around 65%. But I thought a humid hide might be easier :) And, you keep your humidity above 60% ALL the time? I thought that was too high...

Re: Homemade Humid Hide?
I use a large(size appropriate) tupperware container with a hole cut in the side and moss inside it. With the lid on it. Just an idea, if you feel you need it.

60%+, and my snakes all shed in one piece all the time and are happy as clams.

tape is usually bad, but in this case it is just part of the box, and I don't see an issue.

Oh alright [emoji108] I always try to keep Geno at 55-60% because I'm so afriad of scale rot. But that's good!
So I guess I'll keep the hide? I thought of the tape and trimmed everything away I thought posed a possible threat. Thanks again [emoji4]

Sorry I have to disagree. It doesn't matter if it's part of the box, an insistent enough bp can and will find a way to get it peeled off or on them. It doesn't stop the bp from crawling over the box or rubbing against it and that's enough to eventually loosen a tape edge. It's just too risky in general. Bad things have happened in this forum with duct tape.
in the end op your choice, but why take the chance?

yeah, you will have to throw that hide away anyway as he will eventually pee in it.

Re: Homemade Humid Hide?
The tupperware hide is really easy to clean/sanitize too. Just so you know [emoji16]

To GPBP, it's all good we just care and so do you to make sure there is nothing that can harm your pet. Can is the key word. It might never happen but no need to take the chance.
Tupperware is a perfect option because you can toss that into the dishwasher.

Re: Homemade Humid Hide?
Also, just a thought, but the shed process can take a few days and the cardboard *may get soggy and collapse or mold.
Tupperware will work in a pinch, and you wont have to worry as much on the tape/mold issue. If you want a neat /easy idea that works well - I use a terra-cotta pot. I soaked it for 48 hours so that is was nice and wet then used a dremel and a hammer to make a snake size hole (used a file to smooth the edges) in the bottom (where the drain hole is). Then I turn it upside down and set it in the little drain pans that come with the pots and layer the bottom with sphagnum moss. I usually keep my humidity between 50 and 60 and then bump it up to 65 during shed.
As long as the substrate he is laying in is not wet, he should not get scale rot. I keep mine up by keeping a ball of damp sphagnum moss in both corners at all times (I put it in little salsa cups to keep the bedding dry). This way i can wash the cups and change out the moss regularly.
Hope this helps. I was super worried that I would make a mistake and harm my snake too when I got him, so I understand

Re: Homemade Humid Hide?
Thank you guys [emoji4] I made the Tupperware hide, but the edges are a bit sharp. Is it ok if I smoothed the edges with a lighter?

Re: Homemade Humid Hide?
That should be fine, just do it away from the smoke-detectors and in a well ventilated area away from the snake :gj:
and of course let it cool off before giving it to him

I used my fingernail file to smooth the edges (I don't know why I forgot to mention that, sorry) but I think the lighter should work. Hubs suggested using a soldering iron along the edges.

Re: Homemade Humid Hide?
that Tupperware "hide" is too transparent and will likely be rejected, as it lets the snake be seen from all sides.

I tried to cover it up a little with some substrate. I couldn't get a picture because my phone's almost dead and the lighting stinks, but I think it looks a bit better :)

Tape corners unstick and fall off over time sometimes, especially when wet or damp, and accidents happen. It's honestly better to just avoid it altogether than take that "I bet it won't happen though" risk.

Since you asked, I've circles the areas where there are visible edges susceptible to peeling.

Granted op replaced the hide anyways (looking good op!) but just in case anyone else is not convinced duct tape = bad times. Here are the risky areas
