Lazy Layla tricked me!
She was having a difficult time striking accurately and missed about 5 times so I was on edge about releasing it right when she hits it.
https://youtu.be/SdkvLF4r8A4
This is her first rat fuzzy (coming from mice fuzzy)
She weighed 67g March 18th when we brought her home from petsmart. Wednesday April 12th before this rat fuzzy she was at 80g. I think I have been under feeding her this past month with a single mice fuzzy every 5 days. So I decided to order rat fuzzies to switch her over to from The Big Cheese Rodent Factory. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...db7cea7783.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...95cc5cfbde.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...b2e84fc763.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...172352c50a.jpg

congrats on a rat feed, and yes stick with rats from now on as those mice would have been too small.
also I cannot tell specifically from the pictures but does she have a retained eye cap or is she in blue?

the video cracked me up!!! what a lazy noodle.

Well she started about 3-4 days after we got her. Gave her a week to get what she can on her own but finally a broke down a got her a tub to soak in for a while and managed to get most of her body off but her head. She still has both eye caps and a chunk on top of her head.

I know, the wife and I can't stop laughing about it.
It really helps break down the barrier of the snake negative creepy vibe most people get and builds character for my wife and kids to see that their not at all in anyway dangerous.

i really liked hearing the kid(s) in the background: "what kind of strike was that??" LOL. always nice to witness a future herper!

Re: Lazy Layla tricked me!
Lol it actually was the Wife laughing, it's her video of it on Snapchat. Then ya my daughter "what kind of strike was that??". My 6yr old son wants to hold her sooo bad, but I'm holding off for a little bit longer to let Layla settle in more and get used to their smell

Make sure you get that humidity up. She has some stuck eye caps and even though they go mostly by heat/scent that never helps with striking accuracy. The more appropriate sized food will definitely help her get some weight on. In the future if it's not eating without hesitation I'd try to make feedings less of a spectator event. Some of mine are more shy than others and prefer eating when left alone in the dark at night. Congrats on the new baby.

Thanks Hannah
I had it around 70% when I noticed she started but I think petsmart might have made her dehydrated up until we got her home. I make sure now to keep it between 55-70% now.
She never hesitated to eat with all of us around and all the lights on which I'm thankful for. She has never balled up when I get her out and always enjoyed exploring.
Here's some pics of her setup now. Her cage sits on my computer desk in the kitchen. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...f287018ad6.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...1e2591fb1d.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...3497864b4f.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...7abef1c1d8.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...75de65ba86.jpg

This was her first day home

Re: Lazy Layla tricked me!
Also to note, she refused to eat for them the day before I bought her, she had a regular poop the morning after her fist night home. She has only diarrhead 3 times since.

Definitely one of the best feeding videos I've seen!! Thank for sharing!!
I'm switching my guy over to rats within the next few weeks, hopefully his transition goes as smoothly as yours seemed to, and hopefully just as comical.:gj:

Well I only bumped it up a little because a few times I've picked her up out of her hot hide she was felt cool to the touch and she had already been in there for quite awhile. Also I checked with an infared temp gun and the substrate was only about 82*F. She had dirreaha the 3 poops and I know they need heat for digestion, so i thought it might not be warm enough. I bumped it down to 96*f under the substrate. Her cool side fluctuates from 75*f at night to 82*f late afternoon.

Haha ya, I guess she expected me to get it started for her by placing it in her mouth. So glad the wife was recording. I need to get a phone holder or something so I can record and feed at the same time but still have smooth still video. Autofocus sucks with 60fps.
I expected trouble for sure but was so happy she didn't care. She has always ate immediately, even when shedding. But since I started offering her the right size prey every 4-5 days, she runs off to her hot hide and we won't see her again till next feed or when I get her out. Before during the first 3-4 weeks she was always out climbing on everything poking around the top lid and getting wrapped around the temp cords. Eventually I hot glued them in place and got her feeding back on track. She is still calm as ever and never struck out in defense or been in a defensive position from what I can tell.

aye still no good, you need to regulate the temp on the glass, not the substrate. She can burrow if she needs the full 90-92, she will find the heat. The cool side is fine with that temp range but that hot side is an accident waiting to happen for sure.

So 90-92 inside glass temp? Ya I reread the glass tank how to. Dont know where I got to thinking that it was supposed around 95* but then she still felt cool to the touch.
Thanks for setting me straight. We'll luckily yesterday while checking her over shed, I didn't see anything off or obvious damage, hopefully nothing internally.

she most likely hasn't been in contact with the hottest part luckily so she should be ok. no worries man I just didn't want you to have an accident with the snake and be freaking out if she got burnt.
-
Re: Lazy Layla tricked me!
Glad to hear you've got the temps sorted and are getting the humidity sorted out!

Ya don't want to be to be one of those new owners. I see them threads where their freaking out. I try to research and figure it out first on my own and do everything I can to never get to that point. Plus I have a lot of experiences to read and learn from.

Not much BP experience here but a 95F +/-2 floor will not burn a reptile or BP. It might not be ideal but will not 'burn' (+hopefully it thermoregulates). FYI my thermostat needs to be set at 107F (affixed to bottom of UTH) to achieve glass floor temps between 90-95F (there is some variability across the UTH). A half inch or so of substrate knocks that down 2-3F and the hot spot hide consistently maintains ~ 88-90F... so I think/hope I'm good too

Basically what I was thinking when I bumped it up. O well better safe than sorry. I'll keep checking the Temps throughout the week to see if it stabilizes. I also have coco fiber coming so maybe the temp will get through better.
Here is her current temp and humidity https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...ff3fda8139.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...16b63a3e3d.jpg

That's why I post my setup for people to critique or suggest different options. I'm not afraid of opnions. This forum is pretty friendly and caring.

Looks like you got the head shed fine so there shouldn't be any problem.
Try to get the next shed out without a bath and you'll be on track. beautiful snake btw, congrats
-
Dented eye cap usually indicates dehydration/not enough humidity. It goes away if you bump the humidity up.

Can thank petsmart husbandry, it's been there since we brought her home. I'm sure it wasn't up to par. I've made sure to always kept it above 50%, fresh full water every couple days.
Also with the first shed (which was 2days after we got her), I waited 4-5 days before a soak/damp towel and same with this one.
Thank you for the quick replies.

3rd times a charm! Finally got a full shed!
I thought balls only shed every couple months? Layla has shed 3 times in 2 months. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...2b02392e0f.jpg

They can shed more often to get rid of problems like stuck eyecaps or injuries. 3 times in 2 month is actually pretty normal for a baby, it'll slow down as it grows.
Congrats on sorting out humidity.
ps: you can't measure the snake length from the shed, it's usually 1/3 longer. Not sure if that's what you were doing.

Thanks! It feels good. It's almost like that's their test for you in how well you did on keeping their husbandry on point.
Lol was just curious on length but ya I know it's not their true length. It measures close though about 20in depending on on how hard I stretch it.
That's kind of crazy. I was surprised really then bummed because she had balled it up and looked like she kicked it out of the door, and then I saw it had a dark spot in the middle of it. I was like "Aww man! She pooped in it!". I was super excited to get my first full shed to show my wife and kids.

lol yeah, that's what they do. They kind of roll it off like a sock, flipping it inside out, and then usually poop, pee, or both right after.

Re: Lazy Layla tricked me!
Here's some pics with the rock lair. She is 210g and maybe 20-22in long, just to give you guys an idea for the medium size. I really like but now it really makes my 10gal tank look small. Now Im considering getting a 20gal tub setup just to be able to get better clutter to put in there. I found these 2 tubs that look they might work with out addiing extra clips or straps to secure the lid.
