    finally settled a new retic
    Hi dears,
You might know my previous thread which introduced my new citron platinum tiger and suddenly observed some deformities on his back which I've decided to return and get a new one by your helps so finally I've got new my boy from the breeder and I really like him(?); I asked the boy but I think need the proving for the confirmation which actually I don't care as long as he is healthy.
I'd like to share some his photos and keep a record of his progress here.
He is quite calm and good!

Nice looking retic. I almost went for a 50% SD 6.25% D female platinum tiger het snow but I ended up getting the male white albino tiger het snow from Vital Exotics. If I had room for another snake, I would probably look at one. And dang, that gal is huge!! She about double the size of my male lol.

Looks like a plat tiger to me. Nice snake. I almost picked up a 50% SD female version of one of those but ended up getting my White tiger from Kris at Vital Exotics. Has he tried to eat you after coming out of shed? Caesar freakin went on a rampage after shed and tried to attack his paper towel "petting stick". Now he is just staring at me from over top of his hide wanting food asap lol. Who would have guessed a retic in shed for about 1.5 weeks would so hungry lol. I should have named him "Starvin Marvin" after the South Park little Ethiopian boy they got from Suzanne Somers lol. And wait, they grow like weeds...the retics, not sure about the Ethiopian kids....

That's an awesome retic, is that full blood mainland? If it is it's going to get HUGE! I have an albino 50% Jampea dwarf / 50% mainland. Not quite sure how big she is going to get but she isn't even a year old and she is eating large rats like crazy. She is doubling in size every 3 weeks! She is growing so fast she scares me LOL. My retic gets stuck in shed a lot and you have to give her a soak in a 90F bath. You'd be surprised how big of a rat your little retic can eat, you can probably feed it small rats already. When my retic was that size I was feeding twice a week. Now that she is over five pounds I'm feeding once a week. Here's a photo of Lucy:

I'm far from a retic expert but I think Jampea still get to like 12 or 14'. I was told by Kris at Vital Exotics that my 37% SD 31% dwarf male will top out around 5-7' with normal feedings. So far at about 6 months old, he's about 4' and getting more hungry as he ages lol. If I had to guess on your girl, I would say 14' is going to be conservative and I would plan for 16'. Probably wrong but I would plan for it anyways.

Wow Lucy! so beautiful retic! thank you for sharing the photo and your experience! mine, pure mainland blood which means will get huge as you mentioned. I've been also surprised on their fast growth rate and it is so nice he seems mellower which I really love the interaction through daily basis short handling! I've fed him weekly basis, hopper size rats or chicks but also I'm thinking to increase its period.

    Yes,

    Really nice looking animal.

You can still control a mainland animal's size to some extent. I would feed conservatively but properly if that makes sense.

Yeah don't feed them all they want to eat. I've been feeding Caesar all he wants to eat and he's at least as long as his T10 cage and he's only 6 months old. It's only been 4 days but he is out at night pacing the front of the cage looking for dinner lol.

Nice looking guy. He looks to about the same size as my 6 month old SD but like I said, my guy is insatiable.

And they are mellow until they smell dinner lol. Has your guy come to the front of the cage yet and stared you down for dinner? That's when you really know that a retic can think haha.

yes right. I'd like to taste biweekly basis feeding plan if valid but he seems so small baby for me. not sure I can do that ;(

I'm not sure I would do a biweekly feeding on your mainland. Pythons generally eat a lot more than boas and I think you would be starving him. I would feed him weekly. True you can control their growth to an extent with food intake but you got a mainland. It is going to grow to large. No point trying to avoid that fact by starving him. I'm no retic expert but I would feed him weekly for his first year and then evaluate how he looks and go from there. If he looks rather chunky, then maybe back off some. If he looks skinny give him more. If he tries to eat your face whenever you open the cage, feed him a lot more lol.

Caesar my 6 month old SD/D guy is out windshield wiping and patrolling all over at night after his 4th day. I was going to do weekly feeding with him but I might have to do every 5 days until he hits a year and then drop him down to weekly or longer. he is a pig though and has an incredible feeding response.

Babies are voracious and should be fed every 5-7 days. Adults can be fed biweekly and some will go off food on their own, like during breeding season. There is no frustration like thawing out and warming up a 4-5# rabbit feeder and having it be refused!

My little man is out and about after 4 days lol. He's such a pig. So funny, he has settled in and now when he's hungry and the door opens, he will instantly pop out of where he is, be it behind his hide or inside his hide and stare at me for food lol. Been thinking of trying a chick or baby quail for my guy too as my snake food gal now stocks both as well as guinea pigs and of course rabbits, rats and mice.

Yeah I actually wanted a retic for a long time, probably as long if not longer than I wanted boas because the old reptile shop when I was teenager, the owner had retics and burms as pets. I couldn't keep snakes at my parents' house so I ended up buying a hatchling Nile monitor from him as he had eggs that hatched. Really miss my monitor as he was a giant puppy dog but he outgrew my ability to provide for him so I ended talking to the owner and he found him a home with a guy who had lots of monitors and had rooms in his coverted to cages with the doorways being a sliding glass door lol. So he went to a good home.

But I was kind of scared of owning a retic because of their size and their food drive I've read about. But after taking the plunge with Caesar my SD, I love retics. I mean I'm not sure Caesar is the norm as he is my only retic but he is as mellow as my boas. And yeah they are definitely curious and always want to see whats happening.

Great! thank you for sharing your experience and I totally agree with you. Also I could imagine how you were missing your monitor before if his personality was that puppy dog since I had a water monitor when I was teenager but he was not that friendly but still awesome reptile.
Since my boy is from mainland blood so hope that I can cover , handle him properly probably near future! So far so good even with my kids. :)

I would imagine it would be ok since yours is a male so he should stay smaller.....should....lol. I personally think if they are fairly mellow as babies, they will grow into mellow adults as they will become more used to you. At least all my snakes have mellowed more with age.
