My Newest Addition
I'd been looking for one of these and they are so hard to find in this area. One popped up on Kijiji two or three days ago and I bought it in a flash. Unfortunately the pictures aren't the greatest but she was a bit cranky (also the container, etc is what the seller delivered her in). She is around 7 months old and, I think, beautiful.

Re: My Newest Addition
Just got them up there. Hopefully I'll have more time to get good ones.

Re: My Newest Addition
That's a great looking snake. I just got one myself on Wednesday. A cute little 34g squirt.

He looks nice. I really like how carpets look better as they age.

Re: My Newest Addition
She's flipping beautiful and can't wait to get her out but I will wait diligently for her to settle in. She isn't going I her hide and doesn't seem to be scared of anything. I'm going to have fun getting her accustomed to me and getting her enclosure set up. I just need a suitable name for her. My daughter wants to call her Sioux. I kinda like Alice or Sidney but haven't settled on anything yet. Now I have a ball, boa and a JCP I think I should be content for awhile. Although there is a BEL and a beautiful gopher snake for sale in the area. Have to restrain myself (or look for a bigger house!).:D

Give it up and get the bigger house. :)

Great looking Jungle BWB! :) Congrats!
Looking forward to more pictures down the trail.

Re: My Newest Addition
Great looking JCP. I think you'll really enjoy the carpet experience. They're definitely one of my favorites.

Re: My Newest Addition
Yeah, I'm really pumped about her. It's hard to find any carpets in this part of Canada (lots for sale in Ontario but expensive to send to the east coast) so when this one showed up, I sent the email, then called. Talked to the guy for a long time but had a funny feel about him. He seemed to know his stuff but some things he talked about didn't ring true ( I base a lot of my knowledge and insight on what I have learned and continue to learn here - I check other sites but usually learn very little more elsewhere!). Through our talks and working our schedules he decided that he would bring the snake to me. This worked out well but now, when she's settled in, I have to set her up properly (and get some better pics, weigh and measure her) so her enclosure is more with what she needs. I can't wait (but will since I know it will be for the best).

Re: My Newest Addition
Holy crap, just got the scare of my life. I had a screen on top of her cage, attempting to get the humidity down. I didn't have a weight on it (she has not moved since she came here). When I came back from picking up my daughter and we went to have a look at her, she was gone, We eventually found her in the bottom drawer of the desk that her tub is sitting on. Now she's going crazy trying to get out and I've got all kinds of stuff holding down the cover but I got her back and going to watch her like a hawk, I retired as of March 30th - thank heavens I will have time to watch her.
-
Re: My Newest Addition
@ BWB- I'm not sure what kind of enclosure you have her in but snakes are amazing escape artists. I'd highly advise getting some clips for that screen top or move her into a more secure lockable enclosure or tub. I tried the weights and bungy cords method with a BP I had many years ago and no matter what I did he would find a weak spot and get out. Eventually he was lost for good. You got lucky this time so you can still fix the issue. I'd hate to see you lose such a gorgeous animal. Oh yeah, CONGRATS on the successful retirement!!
-
I don't know about clips... I once had a baby corn snake escape from a tank with clips on all four sides. Never underestimate their ability to squeeze through tight spaces. Of course that may just be because she was so small but just make sure you get some REALLY secure clips

Re: My Newest Addition
I see to be hearing more of young snakes trying the "great escape". Do snakes calm down as they get older and bigger and don't try as hard to get out? And I think that I'm going to call her Sheila - a good Australian name, from her native land!

Re: My Newest Addition
If you name her Sheila, she can be a girlfriend for my Bruce! [emoji4]

Re: My Newest Addition
She is temporarily in a plastic tub that the seller brought her in - not ideal but I am making it work until I get the ball moved to a bigger enclosure (got to find a decent place in the house for it) and the carpet will go in the ball's old setup (after much cleaning and new goodies!). I'm beginning to think that Sheila fits for the Carpet's name. My neighbor was over for a visit and wanted to pick her up but I said that she stays in her tank until at least Friday. Interesting to see how many people are curious but still so cautious about snakes.

My snakes are adults, except for one Juvie JCP. They all act calm and that they could care less about escape. But then one or two days every few months they will search for an escape hatch even though husbandry has remained unchanged.
Now my 6 year old Coastal Carpet will seize Any opportunity to escape when presented. When humidity gets to high from her going in and out of her waster bowl I will open the sliding door for ventilation. She immediately feels draft of humidity leaving and will head for the door. I can't even have the doors cracked open. If so, she will bow the doors out and squeeze out. One of my Boas have done this as well. That's why I will not have any more enclosures with plastic sliding doors. In my future, it's only drop down doors or glass sliders.

I just had her tub open (with a screen on top, weighted down) and I was sitting at the table next to her tub sending a pic of the snake to a friend. I looked up and there was that cute yellow and black body part way out of the cover. She pretended to put up a fuss - gave me a "love" bump (not a bite) and let me put her back. I cannot give this snake any means of escape or she is gone. I'll have to be very diligent about fastening down whatever enclosure I move her to. I have a batch of good substrate cooking/drying to change her out. She came into my world so fast that I didn't get a chance to prepare properly.

My Newest Addition
Well it was a good thing that you were there at the scene of the crime!' :)
Now you know what needs to be done.

Re: My Newest Addition
Had her out today - squirmy, fast little worm but she was good and didn't try to chew my hand off! She weighs 54 gms and is almost (I think) 26 inches long. And what a long, thin tail she has. It's so different handling something so small when my boa is a good 4 feet long. Lots of fun ahead getting her used to handling, etc.

My Newest Addition
I know what you mean!
My JCP is my only small snake/Juvie. It was quite an adjustment since my others are big and you have hold them somewhat firmly. I had to immediately learn to be extra gentle with Esmarelda. She increased in size by 60-70% in the last 6 months.
Ziggy's Carpets have grown tremendously in a short period as well.

Re: My Newest Addition
Here's my latest pic. So hard to get one of her with my BlackBerry. I had one of the wall, my leg and the other side of the room before she settled for a minute on my hand.

Re: My Newest Addition
Your girl is looking good B. Her colors are popping nicely. Keep the pictures coming. ;)

Great shot of that little beauty!

Re: My Newest Addition
Outstanding animal and beautiful colors. I hope my Edith is as nice.

Re: My Newest Addition
Thanks, guys, she is such a sweety. A bit defensive in her tub but never really hit me - all talk... but that's fine. I had some good light when I had her out and thought I should grab a pic with my phone. I had her on my arm, had to put my password in the phone and try to hold onto her. It was like wrestling with a livewire. She was everywhere and the first three pictures showed it! I thought it was great that the one pic that showed a snake had her tongue in it. I'm going to attempt to feed her today. Hopefully that goes well. My ball didn't eat again so my boa got fed (the rat barely makes it into his enclosure as Turbo snaps it up midair!).

Re: My Newest Addition
Good luck with the first feeding BWB. Just make sure your prey item is warm enough and try feeding after dark. I doubt your carpet will miss many meals.
-
Re: My Newest Addition
Thanks for the info. I was planning on feeding her tonight, after dark. She should be hungry. Should I feed her every 7 days or so until she matures?

I feed my young carpets somewhat liberally B. If she's 54g at 7 months I'd feed her every 5 days for a while. Once she gets some size on her I'd dial it back to every 7 days. My jungle was hatched on 7/30/15 and was 31g when he arrived on 9/22/15. He most recently weighed 376g on 4/11/16. He eats every 5-7 days. I feed the carpets roughly 15-20% of their body weight per feeding.

Re: My Newest Addition
She ate last night:) but I had to leave the pinkie in her enclosure (she's still a bit shy of being disturbed) and I checked about an hour later. She was out, roaming around and the meal was gone. I suspect that she will be more receptive to the pinkie doing the dance for her next feeding.
-
Re: My Newest Addition
Congrats on the first successful feeding B. I'd skip the pinkys altogether and put that girl on mice hoppers or better still rat fuzzys. Carpets can take down pretty large prey and pinkys don't have as much nutritional value as a more mature prey item.

Same here. I've fed Edith 3 times and each time she would not take it off of the tongs so I let it lay there and each time it is gone the next morning. Also, she handles really well. She has yet to bite or musk.

Re: My Newest Addition
Yeah, only have a couple of pinkies left then will move up. Thanks for the help. As always, really appreciate it (and so do my snakes!).

Re: My Newest Addition
Last week Ying the Bredli took a mouse *sideways*. She looked like she swallowed a baseball. [emoji1]
She normally gets small adult rats, but I was trying to use up some small adult mice. She and my JCP are both great feeders - any rodent, any time, thankyouverymuch!

Re: My Newest Addition
My little worm is doing great - still a bit defensive when she hasn't been out for awhile (after feeding). But I noticed a couple of days ago, right after her last meal that her colours are a little on the drab side and today her eyes are really cloudy. So excited that she is shedding and can't wait to see how she turns out. I'll post some pics when she is done. Yeehaw!!:taz:
-
Re: My Newest Addition
She's going to look better and better with each shed for the next few years B. She'll finally show her true colors when she's about 2. Your girl is gorgeous now but she'll only get nicer. Keep sharing those pics. :)

Re: My Newest Addition
What a great snake she is turning out to be - no problem eating (actually grabs her rat fuzzy in mid-air almost all of the time as she hangs out on her thermometer/hygrometer a lot) and very rarely goes in her hide. She is turning out to be quite a display snake as she is always out somewhere in her enclosure. She is super to handle now and comes out quite easily, seeming to love to explore. About three weeks ago I got a Brazilian Rainbow (had been looking long and hard for one of those, too!). I was told about how difficult he was to handle but he comes out for me with no issues. He is a bit of a handful when out though as he is faster than any of my other snakes but sometimes he just chills with me. He is a fantastic eater and is about 4 feet long but not very thick. His colouring is spectacular!
