Ambient Weather Wireless Thermo-Hygrometer with Two Remote Sensors
Was thinking about picking this up for my tank. I've seen recommendations for Acurite, which has the base as well as a probe to place on the other side of the tank, only downside is you have to stick the base in the tank as well. Found this:

    http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...NVX7C75D1I#Ask

Comes with the base, and 2 wireless sensors. Could keep the base out of the tank and put a sensor inside, on each side. It even allows for user calibration in case the sensors are off. What do you guys think?

What you're calling the downside of the probe is actually its upside. ;) The primary purpose of the probe is to place it in contact with the surface of your enclosure that will be the warmest your animal is exposed to - not to measure the ambient temperature of the other side of the enclosure. If all we wanted to do was measure the ambient temperature, there would be no reason to recommend probed contact thermometers at all. :)

Thanks, I know :) It was more for along the lines of not having to put the base unit inside the tank to have both sides of the tank covered for ambient. As for me I have a probe already for temp with my thermostat to test the surface.

I have one, its a different model control panel, but uses the same transmitter bases, I have 5 hooked up right now, with the ability to run 8 (I think) and they work great for measuring the ambients in my lizard cages. Not really useful for my snake though.

The probe for the thermostat is not technically a thermometer probe - it's really only a reporting mechanism placed on the outside of your enclosure for your thermostat to use. The thermometer probe SHOULD be on the inside of the enclosure at the hot spot to read the hottest temperature the animal has access to.

Or, you could just get a hand-held infrared thermometer for surface temperatures and call it a day. :gj:

The probe is placed inside the tank

For the thermostat? What heat source is it controlling?

One day! I just need to monitor humidity as well, two birds with one stone works best for me.

    My under tank heater

It should be on the outside in order to be effective (away from "the elements" inside the enclosure that would cause it to not do its job properly).

If you haven't seen it already, here's how a thermostat should be properly set up using a UTH:

If you've already stuck the UTH to the bottom of the enclosure (which many before have done), don't try to pry it off to re-position the probe. You can just tape the probe to the under side of the UTH, making sure it's flush against it, rather than sandwiching it between the UTH and the glass.

I have used something similar for a few years now. This http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...ilpage_o01_s00

I have the 3 sensors but only the two is available right now. I use the IR temp gun for my hotspots and then have one sensor in three different cages for my ambient readings. I like that I can take the main station with me throughout the house and track temps or leave it in the snake room and get the ambient room temp as well. I have found it very handy and much better than the Accurite thermometers that are usually recommended. I don't remember how many of those I bought but they all died within a year.

Alright, so I'm going to place the probe for the thermostat on the heat pad. Since the Ambient Weather control unit can have up to 8 channels, I got another wireless sensor with a probe:

    http://i1045.photobucket.com/albums/...psd1qchffq.jpg

Now I can put this probe in the substrate for surface temp, and the other 2 will have one on each side of the tank for ambient temp and humidity. And all will be able to be viewed wirelessly from the control panel, which I could put anywhere in my house :)

Alright, have everything hooked up. Thermostat probe is outside tank wedged between uth and glass, thermometer probe is inside tank under substrate on top of glass, ambient temp thermometer is on wall of hot side and another thermometer on the other wall of the cool side. What temps am I looking for for all 3? What is the max temp the substrate probe should be? Going to need to play with thermostat to get the temps dialed in.

    Sounds good!

Thermometer under substrate (hot spot): About 90°F (no higher than 95°F EVER)
    Ambient temp: About 80°F
Thermostat setting: Whatever it takes to get your hot spot probe to sit at the above hot spot temp
