I would think that it takes great patience and small hands!
I borrowed this pic from this site. As you can see, elastic is used as the hold down.

Re: How do you make snake hats?
A lot of the times, you can find small hats that are meant to be key chains and such. With a bit of tweaking they can make a perfect snake hat! Though good luck finding any hat that fits a baby bp head... Also, check out BeardedDragon.co. They sell some hats and bandanas.

Instead of a strap around the snake, I've heard of people affixing the hats with a little peanut butter, I don't know if it's safe though, just what I've heard. I know i wouldn't enjoy peanut butter on my head though lol. I do have a tiny plastic 49ers hat I would like to get a picture of loki wearing, but he's pretty head shy

Re: How do you make snake hats?
I've seen where there is a strap, but if it was tight enough to hold it on I would think that it would dig into the head skin. I don't know this is why I can't figure it out on my own.

I would think elastic...... Like very weak, thin elastic...

you could ask the gandolph wears hats woman

I could be wrong, but I think she has an exceptionally patient snake. :P I believe she makes all her hats herself, out of a lightweight clay that you bake in the oven, and I'm pretty sure they are just set on top of the snake's head for the cute pictures. One great photo never tells the whole story about how many times it may have fallen off during the photo shoot. :P

indeed.
i don't think i could get any of my snakes to sit still long enough to put a hat on them AND snap a picture.

Sorry, it's just wrong. And then people get up in arms about " feeding tanks". I know some people feel the keeper should be able to clean or bath a snake. Others say don't stress it out. I don't really get how anything good can come out of this. Teaching people, hey it's ok mess with their head. Sorry, but I'm stuck on old school for this one.

It seems like a really minor point to be so staunchly "old school" about. There's no harm in it. Could someone potentially cause harm to their snake by tightly tying or gluing some weird hat onto their snake's head? I suppose so...but such a person is probably causing all sorts of harm to their animal anyhow, and a few cute pictures of snakes wearing hats (or the absence of such pictures) isn't going to change that.
Really, there's so little potential for true harm. In my opinion, there IS plenty of potential for good to come of it. How many people who are reluctant to like, or are indifferent to snakes are turned around by pictures that make the animals look particularly cute, friendly, and/or something they can relate to? Would they win over staunch haters who kill every snake they encounter? Probably not...but even then, who can say?
I don't think everyone needs to rush out and make hats for their snakes and try to convince the snakes that wearing them is "fun"...but for the few people that do, and manage to get fun pictures...why not?

Hi Judy, I guess I can see your perspective. But at the same time I just don't like the whole concept. Can we just agree not to nessecary agreeing. :)

LOL...sure. Not everyone has to "get" everything someone else does. Especially when it comes to something so random, whimsical and downright silly.

Re: How do you make snake hats?
http://ball-pythons.net/forums/showpost.php?p=2337898 I have been thinking about this but I probably won't ever do it. Anyway, this thread has some (follow the link on the thread for more) and I believe they are clay.

Thank you everyone for your thoughtful replies. I have a boa who isn't shy at all of her head already and just got a baby ball python that I'm raising to not be so afraid of head contact (what if I need to inspect or observe a future health issue in the head area?). I've seen the pictures and videos of snakes with hats and the positive responses from people who don't necessarily even like snakes because it seems to make them more appealing. My sister is afraid of snakes and I think making it cuter would ease some of the tension when she visits. I don't plan on having an extensive portfolio like Gandalf but hoped to know how to do it safely should the situation arise.

I started putting hats on my boa about two years ago, and she now has a couple thousand followers, many of which are not snake people. It's actually been really positive because it's gotten a lot of people who previously hated snakes to reconsider. I really think that when done carefully it can be a huge way to reach out and educate people. She has changed many many minds.
I either just set them on her head carefully, or else use a tiny bit of peanut butter. I see no reason why it would be an issue. I clean it off gently as soon as I'm done taking pictures. Figment is a very tolerant snake.
Here are a few of my favorites.

Here is the hat my daughter made for my snake Herbie's 3rd birthday. She made it out of paper and used a cut rubber band to gently secure it to his head. He didn't seem to mind (he's not head shy AT ALL).

I think if it was somewhat tight and made of strong wool it would stay on. I'm totally gonna make one!

not to rain on anyone's parade, but a "snake sweater" wouldn't keep a snake warm, as the concept of a sweater requires the wearer to produce body heat.

I've, like so many on here. Having been keeping for a long time. And I'm not ashamed to admit I'm always learning more. I never wanted to be part of a form, but after lurking forever. My kids encouraged me to join (Little ones are so tech savvy ). I think within reason, to each his own. But I can't help but see this as a conflict to the welfare of the snake, and potential for disaster. And a undermining of what's in the snakes best interest. Just my opinion. No need to start a war. I can understand strong feelings of feeder tanks, and f/t vs live. Tanks vs tubs. But I just can't help thinking of someone trying to stick a hat on a snake, and getting tagged. People get upset about stressing a snake with a soak, but sticking things on a snakes head. Sorry, be happy and happy Herping. But a big "I don't get it". Sorry Judy, I'm not trolling for a fight. Just doesn't seem like something that should be encouraged. Peace.

Nothing to apologize for at all. You have a valid opinion and posted your reasons for your opinion in a calm and civil manner. I wish all disagreements were handled this way! It's up to anyone reading these threads to decide on their own if they want to agree or disagree with you or me or anyone else, and you gave some sound reasons for folks to consider.

Yeah...I don't know how many people I've shown a picture of my ball python and they ask if it's safe because "the fangs have been removed" :O
